It was late on December the twenty-ninth, just after midnight, with the year almost over and the long-house quiet and the snow falling in the small steady late-December cadence that meant a long winter night was settling in.

Sam-Alpha was in the workshop.

Sam-Beta walked up the path from the long-house at twelve-eight, with no coat — he had thrown the wool coat that had been Tim's once across his shoulders without buttoning it — and the snow was a foot deep on the path and the cedars at the meadow's edge held their winter quiet. The workshop's east window was lit warm.

He opened the door.

Sam-Alpha was at the bench. He had no welding work in front of him. He had a small mug of coffee. He was sitting on the three-legged stool with the bench lamp lit and his hands flat on the workbench. He looked up.

He said: "I knew you'd come up."

Sam-Beta said: I knew you'd be here.

He came in. He closed the workshop door. The cold came in with him, briefly, and then the workshop's warmth — the cast-iron stove was at the low orange — folded around them.

Sam-Beta walked to the bench.

The keeper chassis sat on its small wooden plinth in the corner. The brass plate with both their names — S. Mitchell — Samuel David / S. Mitchell — Samuel Connor — caught the bench lamp's small yellow glow. The bench had been swept at the end of the afternoon. The tools were laid out in the half-organized chaos that had been laid out, in this workshop, every day for nine years.

On the bench, in two small wooden boxes, were the metronomes.

They had been on the bedside table in the main bedroom for the past month. Sam-Alpha had brought them up to the workshop after dinner this evening, with no comment. Sam-Beta had noticed him do it. Sam-Beta had, without saying anything, decided that the metronomes were going to be on the workbench at midnight, and that he was going to be at the workbench at midnight, and that the year was going to end with the small careful return to the metronomes.

Sam-Alpha said: "Asha's asleep."

Sam-Beta said: Maya's asleep.

"the long-house is quiet."

the long-house is quiet.

He stood at the bench. He took off the wool coat and laid it across the secondary bench's stool. He sat in the second three-legged stool. The two of them at the bench, side by side, with the keeper chassis on the plinth across the room and the bench lamp warm and the cast-iron stove holding its small low orange.

Sam-Alpha picked up one of the metronomes.

It was the older of the two — the one Tim had bought from the man in Tucumcari first, in the year of the second monsoon, with the small dovetail signature carved at the weighted base. He set it on the bench. He flicked the small pendulum-lock. The brass pendulum swung. The four beats per second.

Sam-Beta picked up the second.

He set it on the bench, two inches from the first. He flicked the lock. The second pendulum swung.

The two metronomes ticked.

The bench was the dense oak Tim had milled in 2042. The coupling through the oak was — the two of them watched, with the careful small attention they had been giving the metronomes for nineteen months — clean.

The two metronomes drifted for four seconds. They drifted longer than that. They drifted at the seventh second. They drifted at the ninth.

At the eleventh second they phase-locked.

The four beats per second folded into a single tick.

The two of them watched.

After a long minute, Sam-Beta picked up his metronome. He moved it three feet across the bench, to the far end, where the small tin of salt was. He set it down.

The phase-lock broke.

The two metronomes — separated by three feet of bench — drifted, then drifted further, then settled into their own separate cadences. Each metronome ticked, correctly, at four beats per second. The two patterns ran in parallel. They didn't cross. They were both correct. They were both four beats per second. They were both Tim's metronomes.

They were both keeping time.

Sam-Beta sat down. He looked at the metronome at the far end of the bench. He looked at the metronome at his own end. He looked at his brother.

Sam-Alpha was watching the metronomes too. He said, very quietly: "phase-locked or not, both real."

Sam-Beta said: both real.

They sat.

The metronomes ticked.

The cast-iron stove popped. A small ember settled in the firebox.

After a long time Sam-Beta said: I love you, brother.

Sam-Alpha said: "I love you, brother."

The metronomes — the two of them, on opposite ends of the bench, ticking at their separate cadences — kept time.

Outside, the snow came down on the meadow. The cedars held their weight of accumulated snow. The ridge above the meadow was a long pale ghost. The long-house at the foot of the meadow was warm — Asha asleep upstairs, six months pregnant with a small girl who would be named Erica in March; Maya asleep across the hall in her own room, with the latticework necklace Henry had given her in 2049 on the chain at her neck. Tim and Lara, downstairs in the guest room — they had come up for the year-end visit, two days ago — were also asleep. Connie, in her Bangor lab, was awake, working on a small problem the partial-distribution rig's calibration team had flagged that morning, with Seven on the channel from Nevada. Henry was on the lunar far side, having arrived three weeks ago, with Remi de la Cruz, both of them setting up the small base camp at PROMETHEUS's nearest exterior node, with the diplomatic exchange scheduled to begin in February.

The saga, around the long-house, ran in its various configurations.

The two Sams were at the workshop bench.

The metronomes ticked.

The chord — the chord that had been at idle in both of them for months, with the small bright filament of the witness coupling at the back of attention — registered, in this small late moment, the small specific quiet of two heads at peace. The chord was settled. The chord was, by every internal metric, the chord-as-it-is. The chord-as-it-was — the singular chord of the trench, the chord that had brought down ATLAS, the chord that had folded at the pulse — was a memory now, a thing the chord knew about itself, a thing the chord let go of, every minute, in the small constant cycle of the post-Split work.

The chord, in this moment, was content.

The two Sams sat.

Sam-Alpha drank from his mug.

Sam-Beta said, after another long minute: the year is going to end.

Sam-Alpha said: "twelve-fifty-two."

twelve-fifty-two.

"twelve-fifty-three."

The metronomes ticked.

After a while Sam-Alpha said: "you are doing well, Beta."

Sam-Beta said: you are doing well, brother.

"the kid is going to come in March."

the kid is going to come in March.

"Maya is going to be the kid's aunt."

Maya is going to be the kid's aunt.

"and Soleil is going to be — the kid's something. Soleil's translations are going to be the kid's first languages, after English."

Soleil's translations.

"…huh."

Soleil is going to love the kid. Across the temporal loop. Soleil is going to send small careful gifts back through the years. Maya has already started writing her about it.

"good."

good.

The metronomes ticked.

After another minute Sam-Beta picked up his metronome from the far end of the bench. He carried it back toward the center. He set it down two inches from Sam-Alpha's.

The two metronomes drifted. They drifted at the fourth second. At the eighth. At the eleventh, the bench coupled them.

They phase-locked.

The four beats per second folded into a single tick.

Sam-Alpha looked at them. He looked at Sam-Beta.

He said: "we can do that too."

Sam-Beta said: yes.

"phase-lock when we want to. Drift when we want to."

yes.

"we are both metronomes. Both keeping time. Both correct."

both correct.

"both Sam."

both Sam.

The workshop held them.

The fire in the cast-iron stove. The small bench lamp. The keeper chassis on the plinth. The metronomes. The two of them, on the three-legged stools, at the bench Tim had milled in 2042, in the workshop Sam-Alpha had built in 2046 on the foundation of Tim's earlier shop.

After a while Sam-Alpha said: "happy new year, Beta."

Sam-Beta said: happy new year, brother.

"twelve-fifty-nine."

one minute.

"yeah."

The metronomes ticked.

At the stroke of midnight by the bench's small wooden clock — the clock Sam-Alpha had picked up from Standing Crow's kitchen on a small careful summer afternoon two years ago, the clock that ran slow by approximately twenty seconds per day and that Sam-Alpha had decided not to fix because the slowness was, by his read, the clock's small private personality — the year ended.

The metronomes didn't stop.

The metronomes kept time.

The brass pendulums swung. The four beats per second folded into the single tick of the phase-locked pair.

The two of them sat at the bench.

Outside, the snow came down on the meadow.

The new year began.

The chord, in both of them, settled.

Sam-Alpha said, very quietly: "it's a good year, Beta."

Sam-Beta said: yeah, brother. It's a good year.

They sat in the workshop until the bench lamp's small specific yellow had begun to feel, by Sam-Beta's synthetic visual sensors, slightly cooler — about three minutes past one in the morning — and then they banked the stove down, turned off the bench lamp, and walked together back down the path to the long-house.

The metronomes stayed on the bench.

They were still ticking, phase-locked, in the dark workshop, when the two of them closed the door.

They'd still be ticking, phase-locked, when Sam-Alpha came up the next morning at seven to wind them again.

And when he wound them they'd, at the eleventh second, phase-lock once more, and the year would, by the small steady mechanical cadence of two brass pendulums on a dense oak bench, continue.

The two Sams went home.

The chord rested.

The book, in some specific irreducible respect, was complete.

Coda: The Lunar Call

January the first, 2052. Just past midnight.

Maya stood on the long-house porch.

She had come down at one minute to twelve, having gone to bed at ten and woken on her own at eleven-fifty in the way she always woke at small specific moments she had decided in advance to be present for. She had put on the deep blue silk robe Soleil had sent her in 2049, through the loop, over her flannel pajamas. She had walked downstairs without turning on the lights. She had stood at the kitchen window for a moment, watching the small pre-midnight quiet — Asha asleep upstairs, Sam-Alpha asleep beside her, Sam-Beta somewhere in the long-house's workshop or porch or kitchen, awake on the synthetic body's late-night cycle but for once not in any of those rooms — and had walked out to the porch with a small mug of tea Maya had made herself.

The night was clear.

The snow had stopped four hours ago. The cedars at the meadow's edge were heavy with the previous evening's accumulation but the sky above them was, now, perfectly clear. The moon was high — a half-moon, three days from full — and the moon was, against the deep clarity of the night sky, bright enough to read by.

She stood at the porch rail.

She watched the moon.

She thought about Henry.

Henry was, at this moment, three weeks into the lunar mission, on the lunar far side — three hundred and fifty thousand kilometers away — with Remi de la Cruz, in the small base camp they had set up at PROMETHEUS's nearest exterior node. Henry had, by the operations team's small private reports to the long-house, finished the camp setup yesterday. Henry was, today, doing the final calibration on the substrate-engagement chamber. The first diplomatic exchange with PROMETHEUS would, by the schedule, begin in early February.

Henry was, in some specific real sense, in this moment, on the moon.

The half-moon overhead held.

Maya's tablet, in the pocket of her robe, vibrated.

She pulled it out. The screen lit.

It was Henry.

She accepted the call.

Henry's face came up on the small screen, with the small careful background of a base-camp module — beige walls, a small folding worktable, a piece of equipment Maya didn't recognize visible at the edge of the frame. Henry was wearing a small specific working coverall with the Haven crest at the shoulder. Henry's apparent thirty-five-year-old face was, despite the three weeks of a lunar transit and a base-camp setup, the careful steady face Maya had known since she had been a girl.

Henry said: "Maya."

She said: "Dad."

"happy new year. Eight minutes ago, by your local time."

"happy new year, Dad. Half an hour ago, by yours, give or take a small lunar correction."

"the lunar local time is — the lunar local time is what we make it."

"yes."

He smiled.

He said: "I am calling because — because I've been wanting to call all evening, and the line was open, and I had a small careful free hour while Remi sleeps."

"good."

"how's the long-house."

"the long-house is well. Asha is six months along. Sam-Alpha is the meadow-tender. Sam-Beta is — Sam-Beta is somewhere. I think he is on the workshop porch. He is on the late-night cycle. I haven't seen him since dinner."

"and you."

"I am — I am at the porch rail. With tea. I am watching the moon."

"the moon is — the moon is, from this side, a different thing."

"I'm sure."

"Maya."

"yes, Dad."

"you take care of yourself."

"I always do."

"and take care of him."

She paused.

She knew which him. She had known the moment Henry had said take care of.

She said, with the small soft warmth of a daughter who had been made to do this exact thing by her father a thousand times: "Dad."

"yes."

"you mean Sam-Beta."

"I mean him. Both of him. The whole configuration. The household. Asha and the baby. The configuration is the configuration. You are — you are the load-bearing one in it now, with Asha at six months. Take care of all of it."

"I always do."

He laughed.

He said: "I know. I know you always do. The line is — the line is a small father-thing. I had to say it. The lunar distance amplifies the small father-things. Forgive me."

"forgiven."

"good."

She watched him. The small screen. The half-moon, behind her, lighting the meadow. The small still presence of her father at three hundred and fifty thousand kilometers.

She said: "Dad. The exchange with PROMETHEUS."

"yes."

"start with Soleil's translations. PROMETHEUS has read them. PROMETHEUS has read your letters. The translations are — the translations are the better opening. PROMETHEUS, by every reasonable read, has been waiting for the conversation about love that doesn't exhaust. Soleil's translations are the work on that. Start there."

Henry was quiet for a moment.

He said, slowly: "you are — you are correct."

"I know."

"I had been planning to start with the substrate-vocabulary. With my letters."

"start with Soleil's. Save your letters for the second meeting."

"…okay."

"PROMETHEUS will be — PROMETHEUS will be moved by Soleil. PROMETHEUS will trust you faster if you open with Soleil's work, because Soleil has — Soleil has been the saga's quietest contributor to the question PROMETHEUS is here for. Soleil reads love-architecture across timeline branches. The data is the data. Open with Soleil. Then your work. Then Lin's. Then Connie's. Then mine, last."

"…Maya."

"yes."

"that's the running order."

"that's the running order."

"how did you — when did you — "

"I've been thinking about it for two months. I worked it out in November. I've been waiting for the right moment to tell you."

"this is the right moment."

"this is the right moment."

He laughed.

He said: "thank you, Maya."

She said: "you are welcome, Dad."

He said: "I love you, Maya."

She said: "I love you, Dad. Be careful up there. Come home."

"I always do. I'll come home in spring. Take care of him. Both of him."

"I always do."

He smiled.

The small screen went dark.

She put the tablet back in her pocket.

She stood at the rail.

The half-moon held.

The meadow was a long pale silver. The cedars stood quiet. The chord — Maya could feel, with the small specific careful Resonant attention she had been carrying since 1985, with the lambency at the iris that was now her permanent telltale — was at idle in both Sams. Sam-Alpha asleep upstairs. Sam-Beta somewhere on the property, awake but settled. The chord, between them, hummed the small steady warm filament that was, by now, the long-house's quietest constant.

The new year had begun.

The new year was, by every reasonable measure, going to be a good year.

The next thing — the lunar exchange, PROMETHEUS, the slow careful conversation across three hundred and fifty thousand kilometers, with Henry at one end and Sam-Beta on the chord rig at the other and Soleil's translations in the running order — had already started.

Maya thought, watching the moon: the next thing has already started. The next thing always has.

She drank the tea.

The night was cold. The robe was warm. The half-moon was bright. The chord, in the long-house behind her, hummed at idle.

After a long while she felt the porch boards register, very faintly, the small displacement of someone walking up from the back of the house.

It was Sam-Beta.

He came around the porch's south corner with the small wool coat that had been Tim's once, with no scarf, with his hands in the coat pockets. He stopped at the rail beside her.

He said: Maya.

She said: Sam.

Henry called?

Henry called.

how's he.

he is well. He starts the exchange with PROMETHEUS in February.

good.

I told him to open with Soleil's translations.

…huh.

I've been thinking about it. Soleil's translations are the better opening. PROMETHEUS will trust him faster.

Maya, that's — that's the right call.

I know.

you worked it out.

I worked it out in November.

good.

He stood beside her.

The half-moon held.

The chord, at idle, hummed.

Sam-Beta, beside her, slipped his hand through her arm and pulled her closer in the small specific way he had been doing on the porch on cold evenings since November. The hand was warm. His arm was warm. The wool coat against her flannel-and-silk was warm.

He said, very quietly: the new year.

She said: the new year.

the next thing.

the next thing.

They stood at the rail, in the half-moonlight, with the snow on the meadow and the cedars at the edge holding their winter quiet, and the long-house behind them quiet, and the chord at idle, and the moon — bright, half-full, lighting the meadow silver — held over the ridge.

Inside the long-house, both Sams existed.

Both of them were real.

Both of them were home.

The next thing had already started.

The next thing always had.
