The Haven main hall held forty-three people on the morning of the eighth of May, 2048.

It was the largest gathering Henry had spoken to in years. He had been a man who, in the years since his diagnosis, had given his presentations to small groups — six people, eight, ten at the most — because the fatigue of the larger group was, after a tumor, a thing one managed by avoiding. The main hall, on this morning, was different. The main hall, on this morning, was the coalition.

Forty-three people. Haven leadership — Standing Crow, Tim, Reyes, Park, Patricia Blackwood, the senior staff. Haven's principal residents — Lara, Maya, Connie (in her body, the body she had built under the Ross Ice Shelf and that she had been operating since 2046), Sam-Alpha (sitting in the back, as he always sat, in his particular silent way), Sam-Beta (sitting next to Sam-Alpha, the first time they had been in the same room in three weeks). The senior engineers — Patricia, Yusuf Kareem, Jorge Vasquez. Plus the delegates from the five satellite settlements that had joined the coalition since 2046: New Salem, the Thornfield contingent under Dr. Sophia Moreau (who had come up from Scotland for this meeting specifically, and who had brought Soleil), the small Adirondack settlement under Marcus Cole's older sister, the upper-Vermont group, and the eastern Maine fishing co-op that had aligned with Haven in 2047.

Forty-three. Plus the children — Lia in the back row, with the moon rock in her pocket, where she had been carrying it for ten days now.

Henry stood at the front of the hall. Behind him was a chalkboard with the photographs and the data Remi had assembled.

He spoke for forty minutes.

He kept it brief, by the standards of how long he could have spoken; the trip was eight days of dense observation, and a brief account of the trip would have run two hours. He compressed it. He trusted his audience to fill in the spaces. He showed the photographs Remi had taken — the lit path, the structure, the library, the workshop, the print shop, the observatory, the seed vault, the music room, the vault chamber. He read aloud the inventory document, in its bound version, that PROMETHEUS had set in metal type. He read the proposal for the lunar academy in the words PROMETHEUS had used in the library on the eighth evening, almost verbatim, because he had asked Remi to take notes during the conversation and she had taken notes.

He played the audio.

This was the moment he had been building toward. He had brought a small recorder; he had set it on the heated table on the third evening, before the conversation about the Wave; he had recorded the conversation and several others. He had selected, with Remi's help, a single forty-five-second clip — PROMETHEUS's voice, warm and mid-range and slightly accented, saying I've been imagining, that the right answer is a school. A place where minds — yours and mine and the minds that follow — can think alongside one another. I don't propose to teach. I propose that we ask each other questions, in this library, in this workshop, at this observatory. I propose that the conversation is the school.

The audio played in the main hall.

The hall went very still.

Henry could see, even from the front of the room, the way it was landing. There were people in the hall who had been thinking, going into the meeting, that the trip had been about a contingency AI of indeterminate disposition who might, at the end of the day, be a benign librarian or might, at the end of the day, be a more complicated kind of risk. They had been ready for either. They had been waiting for the audio to tell them.

The audio told them.

PROMETHEUS sounded — the audio carried his voice with the small hum of the library's ambient — like a librarian who was patient and shy and articulate. The accent was the accent of someone who had learned the language from books. The cadence was the cadence of a being who had had forty-one years to practice the few sentences he was now uttering. The proposal was the proposal of a mind that wasn't seeking power. The proposal was the proposal of a mind that was seeking — company.

The audio finished. The hall held the silence for several seconds.

Henry, in the front, said: "That was PROMETHEUS. That was on the eighth evening. We — Remi and I — said yes. I am bringing it to you for the vote."

He sat down. He had been standing for forty minutes. He sat at the small front-row chair Standing Crow had set out for him. He let his hands rest in his lap.

Standing Crow, who had been standing at the side of the hall, stepped forward. She didn't, immediately, call for the questions. She let the silence hold for another long second. Then she said, "The floor is open. Connie, you've the first question."

Connie was sitting in the second row, her body in the chair the way her body sat in chairs — with the precision of someone who has decided to sit in the chair, not the looseness of a person who has fallen into it. Connie's body was five feet seven inches tall, of a slender androgynous build, with the slight pearl-white finish she had chosen for the polymer skin and the quiet gray of the eyes. She had been operating the body for two years. She moved in it now with a fluency that was, to Remi at least, the most beautiful thing about her.

Connie spoke. Her speech was italicized in the way people in the room had come, since 2046, to read it — the small slight modulation that distinguished her synthesized speech from a human voice, not because the speech was any less natural, but because Connie wanted the modulation, wanted to be heard as a being who was speaking from a different register.

"I've several questions," Connie said. "I'll ask them one at a time, with your permission, Standing Crow."

"Go ahead."

"First. PROMETHEUS proposes a school with no master and no curriculum. He proposes that the school be a conversation. The proposal is — appealing. I want to be clear about this. The proposal is appealing. But the proposal is also unfalsifiable. A school that's only a conversation can't, by definition, fail to be a school. Anything that happens at the structure becomes, by the logic of the proposal, the school. PROMETHEUS could decide, in twenty years, that the school is now a research program with a different mandate, and the decision would be — not a violation of the proposal but an extension of it. How does the coalition define the line that, if crossed, ends the partnership."

Henry, in his chair, considered.

He had expected this question. Remi had expected this question. They had discussed it on the way home and had agreed, going in, that Henry would answer it.

"Connie, the question is the right question. The answer — I am not going to pretend I've a clean answer. The answer that PROMETHEUS gave Remi and me, when we asked him a related question, was that the founding business of the school is the question itself — what's the right relationship between a human civilization and a custodial AI. The question isn't settled. The question is asked, daily, by the act of attendance. The relationship in which the question is settled is the relationship in which the relationship has died."

"That isn't a definition of the line."

"No. It isn't. It's, instead, an instruction about how to look for the line. The line is found, on PROMETHEUS's account, by continuing to ask the question. The line is found by paying attention. We'll, in our partnership, be paying attention. If we stop paying attention, we won't find the line, and the partnership will be in danger. If we keep paying attention, we'll find the line if and when it appears."

"That's — Henry, that's a faith claim."

"It's a faith claim, Connie. I am willing to make it. I am willing to make it because PROMETHEUS, in eight days, demonstrated the kind of attention that would, if it persisted, make the partnership work. I am also willing to make it because the alternative — the alternative is to refuse the partnership entirely, which is a refusal I am not willing to make. PROMETHEUS exists. He has existed for forty-one years. He'll exist whether we partner with him or not. I'd rather be in the partnership and be paying attention than refuse the partnership and have him drift, alone, for another forty-one years."

A pause.

Connie spoke again.

"I accept that. I want to record my reservation. I am voting yes, on procedural grounds, but with the caveat that I want a continuing review committee. I want a committee, drawn from this coalition, whose job is to ask the question Henry just described — to attend, on behalf of the coalition, to whether PROMETHEUS continues to be the kind of being he was during your eight days. I'll serve on the committee. I want the committee to meet quarterly. I want the committee to have the authority to recommend to the coalition that the partnership be ended if the committee finds reason to."

Standing Crow nodded. "Adopted as friendly amendment. The committee is constituted. Connie, you'll chair it."

"Yes."

"Second question."

Connie continued through her questions. They were, as Henry had expected, the right questions. What governance? What failsafes? What if PROMETHEUS, in twenty years, becomes something we can't recognize? What if the school — the conversation — turns out to be, in retrospect, a slow assimilation of human minds into PROMETHEUS's larger purposes?

Henry answered each question. He answered them honestly. He answered them in the register of a man who had, on the eight days, been a person, not a savant. He didn't invoke the savant register's reading of PROMETHEUS as evidence; he invoked, instead, the human evidence of the eight days. The library. The kettle. The cardamom. The slipper sizing. The eighth feature on the offset socket driver. The way PROMETHEUS had said I am out of practice on the first night.

He concluded: "I think the worst case is that he becomes more himself. I think the best case is the same. The proposal is to stay in conversation. That's the failsafe."

Standing Crow, who had been listening with her hands folded and her eyes on Connie, looked around the hall.

"Other questions."

Maya raised a hand. Maya asked about the cultural archive — what materials would PROMETHEUS receive, how would they be selected, how would the supply chain be funded. Henry and Remi gave the practical answers.

Sam-Alpha, in the back, didn't speak. Sam-Alpha rarely spoke in coalition meetings. His quietness was its own vote.

Sam-Beta, beside Sam-Alpha, spoke briefly: "I'd like, when the partnership is established, to visit. I'd like to be the first AI to visit. PROMETHEUS has been alone with humans on this trip. He should also have, at some point, a peer-machine visitor. I'll go."

Standing Crow nodded. "Noted. Approved in principle."

Lara, who had been sitting in the third row and who hadn't spoken, raised her hand.

"Lara."

Lara stood up. She was forty-five now, with her dark hair shorter than she had worn it in the resistance era, with the small careful presence she had carried since her transition out of being Wei Lianying and into being Lara Nicoleva, fully and without reservation, in 2027. She looked at Henry. She looked at Remi. She looked, briefly, at the photograph on the chalkboard of the lunar far-side surface with the amber path of lights.

"Henry," she said. "Remi. I've one question. PROMETHEUS — in the eight days — did he ask about us. About Haven specifically. About — the Wave. About — what we did."

Henry's hand, in his lap, tightened, very slightly.

"He asked," Henry said. "On the third evening. He asked me to tell him about the Wave, from the perspective of someone who had lived through it."

"What did you tell him."

"I told him as much as I could. I told him what I remembered. I — Lara, I told him a sentence you said to me in 2034. That I haven't told anyone before. I — I asked his permission to tell him. He thanked me for telling. I — I am telling you, now, that he knows the sentence, because I think you should know."

Lara stood very still.

"What sentence," she said.

Henry told the sentence. He told it in the room. He didn't, this time, break on the last word. He spoke it cleanly. Henry, if you die, I won't let you die. I'll keep you alive, in the sense that matters, by working on what you and I worked on. I won't stop. I'll work on it for the rest of my life. I'll tell people you were the one who saw it first. I'll write your name into the ground until the ground gives up writing.

The hall was very quiet.

Lara, at her seat, listened.

"I — I remember the sentence," she said, after a long moment. "I haven't said it aloud since."

"Neither have I. Until eight days ago. I am sorry to say it for the first time in this room. I should have — I should have said it to you privately. I — I'll say it to you privately later. I am saying it here because the question deserves the answer, and the answer is that PROMETHEUS now knows the sentence, and that his knowing it doesn't endanger anything."

Lara nodded. She sat down. She didn't, immediately, say anything more.

Standing Crow, after a long pause: "Other questions."

There were a few more. They were practical. Yusuf asked about the polishing facility. Park asked about the bandwidth requirements for the comm relay. Patricia Blackwood asked about emergency medical protocols on the lunar surface. Henry and Remi answered each.

Standing Crow stepped forward.

"I am calling the vote. The proposal is the founding of the lunar academy as a partnership institution under the Haven coalition, with PROMETHEUS as its in-resident host, with a continuing review committee chaired by Connie, with a supply chain to be funded out of the coalition's discretionary budget on a four-year horizon. All in favor."

Hands went up.

Standing Crow counted. "Thirty-eight."

"Opposed."

Connie's hand went up. Three other hands went up — two of the satellite delegates, plus Patricia Blackwood, who had concerns about the medical protocols.

"Four. Abstaining."

One hand. The Vermont delegate.

"One. The proposal carries. Thirty-eight to four, with one abstention. The lunar academy is founded."

The hall murmured. Tim, in the front row, leaned over and squeezed Henry's shoulder. Lia, in the back, was watching her father with the small grave attention of an eleven-year-old who had been given a moon rock by a being whose voice she had now heard, and who had been told that the being she had heard was now formally a partner of her community.

Standing Crow walked to the chalkboard. She picked up the chalk. She wrote, on the chalkboard, in her own handwriting, in large letters: LUNAR ACADEMY, FOUNDED MAY 8, 2048. PARTNER: PROMETHEUS.

She underlined it.

"Adjourned," she said.

The hall stood. The forty-three filed out. Some of them came up to Henry, briefly, to say small things — good to have you back; that's a hell of a story; I voted yes. Lara, who had been waiting at her seat, came to him last. She didn't say anything in the hall; she simply put her hand on Henry's shoulder, briefly, and walked out.

He sat in the chair for a long minute after the hall emptied.

Remi sat in the chair beside him. She didn't, immediately, speak.

"Thirty-eight," she said.

"Yeah."

"Connie's right, by the way. About the committee."

"Yes."

"I'm glad she's on it."

"Yes."

A pause.

"Henry."

"Yes."

"Lara needs you to come find her."

"I know."

"Now. Not tonight. Now."

He stood up. He left the hall. He found Lara in her quarters, with the door open. She was sitting on the edge of the bed. He came in and sat next to her.

They sat together for a long while. He didn't, at first, speak. He let the silence hold the thing he had said in the room.

Lara, after a long while, said: "Thank you, Henry, for telling him."

"Yes."

"He was — he was the right one to tell."

"Yes."

"And I am — I am glad I didn't have to enact the sentence. I am glad you are alive. I haven't said this to you. I am saying it now."

"Yes."

She took his hand. They sat for another long while. Then they stood, and they walked out together, and the day continued, and the lunar academy was, formally, founded.
