Daniel had been saving the last page.

He hadn't told anybody that, because it wasn't the kind of thing you told, it was the kind of thing you did, the way you did the breathing under the work without saying you were doing it, four down and the pause and six up, the song his mother had taught him at this same table in the spring before they all went down into the rock; and the saving of the last page had gone on so quietly and for so long now, all across the green months and the gold ones and into the first cold week when the cottonwoods along the creek had gone the color of the brass he was about to use, that it had stopped being a decision he was making and become a fact about the book, the way it was a fact about the book that it had been with him in the chamber, that it had ridden down two thousand feet on his lap and back up again, that it was the one thing in the whole house besides his own body that had been in the room when the five went.

He had finished every other page months ago.

He knew exactly how many afternoons it had taken, because he was six and six-year-olds keep the count of things that matter and let go the count of things that don't, and the book had mattered the way few things in his short and already strange life had mattered: the orange page on the very first morning after, the morning the kitchen still smelled of the black tea his mother made when his father was tired, and then the green pages across the back end of that first hard week, and then, slower, one or two a sitting through the winter, the whole patient working-through of a book some publisher in a year called 2046 had printed for children who would never have to learn what Daniel had learned, a book of mountains and boats and a bird on a branch and a girl flying a kite, every one of them done now to its corners in the careful unhurried way he did everything, because his mother had shown him without ever quite telling him that the work was in the corners, that anybody could fill the middle of a shape and only a person who meant it got the color all the way in where the line turned.

And now there was only the last page, and he had gotten the book down off the shelf, and he had carried it to the table, and he had opened it to the back, and he was looking at the page he had known about since the day the book came.

It was a ring.

The publisher had not known it was a ring. Daniel understood that the way he understood most of the things he understood, which was completely and without any words to lay under it: that the person who drew this page in 2046 had only been drawing a shape, a big circle floating above a flat place with some lines coming off it the way an artist draws lines to mean this is important, this is glowing, a generic geometric design the grown-ups would have called it, a thing to keep a child's crayon busy on a rainy afternoon — and that the person who drew it had not been in the chamber, had not stood on the floor of a cylinder hollowed by hand through a single deep granite intrusion and looked up at the coil ring floating eight meters over his head, black so deep it drank the light, soap-bubble shimmer running its rim; and so the person who drew the page had drawn, without knowing, the thing Daniel had walked toward across a silent floor with both hands ready for the brass, and had drawn it badly, and the badness of it did not matter at all, because Daniel had known what it was the first time he opened the book to it, months before they ever flew to the rock, and had closed the book again and put it back on the shelf and decided, in the wordless place where he decided things, that this page would be the last one, that you finished the book by finishing the ring, that the ring was where the book had been going the whole time, and that he would do it when he was ready and not before.

He was ready now. He didn't know how he knew. He just took out the crayons.

He took them out of the box one at a time and stood them up in a row along the top of the table the way the artifacts stood in their row along the counter behind him — he had learned that from the counter, the standing of important things in a line so you could see all of them at once and not lose any — and he sorted them by what he was going to need, and he set the ones he wasn't going to need back in the box, and what he was left with on the table in their short standing row was the brass, and the green, and the white, which wasn't really a crayon you could see but which he would need anyway, would need most of all, because the white was the part of the page he was going to do by not doing it, and a person who didn't understand that the leaving of a thing undone could be the most done part of all wouldn't be able to color this page right no matter how good they were in the corners.

His mother came in while he was sorting the crayons.

She came in the back way, from the shop, with the cold still on her and her sleeves shoved to the elbow, and Daniel heard her stop in the doorway the way she stopped when she was reading the room instead of just walking into it, the pause his father had and his brother had and that he was old enough now to know he had too, the tradesman's pause at the threshold, reading what had changed; and he didn't look up, because looking up would have made it a thing she had to talk about, and he didn't want her to talk about it, he wanted her to do what she did, which was come and sit and watch and not say the thing out loud — and she did. She crossed the kitchen without a word and pulled out the chair across from him and sat down in it, her hands flat on the table, her weight settled, and she looked at the open page between them, and she went still in the way she went still over a thing she was reading rather than glancing at, the way she'd gone still over the honey a year ago though Daniel had been too small that morning to be down yet and only knew about the honey because it had become a story the family told, the morning the gold ran backwards, the morning his brother put his hand on the glass; and his mother looked at the ring on the page, and Daniel watched her understand what page it was, watched the understanding go into her the way color goes into a corner, all the way in, to where the line turns, and she did not say anything, and she did not stop him, and that was exactly right, and he loved her so completely in that moment that he had to look back down at the crayons so the love wouldn't get into his hands and make them shake, because the work was about to start and breathing would ruin it, and so would love, and the song she'd taught him was for keeping both of them out of the hands until the work was done.

He picked up the brass.

He did the ring first, because the ring was the certain part, the part he knew without having to feel his way, and he laid the brass down in the long flat strokes his mother used on a weld bead, around the curve of the circle, following the line the publisher had drawn and not crossing it, keeping the color inside the round, working the way around — and it was wrong, he could tell it was wrong even as he did it, because the real ring hadn't been brass, the real ring had been black, blacker than the crayon box had a color for, blacker than the white-of-the-page was white; but the brass was right anyway, was righter than the black would have been, and he knew that the way he knew the page was a ring, without words, because the black ring had taken the five and a thing that took the five could not be the color you used to remember them by, and the brass was the color of the dial his hand had closed around, the small worn brass dial that turned counterclockwise to the first stop and held three seconds and turned again to the second stop, the brass his father had walked him through standing in the chamber with both of them pretending Daniel didn't already know — I know you know, I'm telling you anyway because it makes me feel better — and the brass was the color of the only part of that whole day that had been Daniel's to do, his hand and the dial and the turn, and so the ring on the page got to be that color, the color of the thing he had done and not the color of the thing that had been done because he did it, and a person who hadn't been there couldn't have known the difference and Daniel couldn't have explained it and both of those things were true at once, the way Henry had taught him to let two things be true at once before Henry got too tired to play the game and then died in the spring with Remi's hand in his.

His mother watched him do the ring and didn't say it was beautiful, which it wasn't, and didn't say it was good, which it was, in the corners.

Then he did the people.

The publisher had not drawn people. The flat place under the floating ring was just a flat place, a plain band of nothing at the bottom of the page meant to be ground or floor or sky, the artist not caring which, and Daniel had decided a long time ago in the wordless place that the people would go there, in the band of nothing under the ring, standing in the part of the floor his father had a name for that Daniel had heard the grown-ups say in their low voices when they thought the children were elsewhere — the resonance shadow, the four meters of floor where the math said a body would live, the shape Henry had drawn on a napkin three weeks before they flew and that Daniel had seen once, upside down across a table, and had never once forgotten, because Daniel forgot the count of things that didn't matter and kept the things that did and the shape on the napkin was a thing that mattered as much as anything ever had: it was the shape of where you were safe, and he and his mother and his father had been in it, and that was why they were home, and the five had not been all the way in it, and that was why they were not.

He used the green for the people. Small dots of green, pressed down hard, each one its own deliberate decision the way Henry's letters had been each their own decision at the end — and he did not draw bodies, did not draw the round head and the stick arms a six-year-old draws when a six-year-old draws a person, because these were not those kind of people, these were the kind you remembered by one small kept thing and not by a face the way his father said the two women in the diner had found each other not by their faces but by a green stone and a notebook; and so Daniel made the people green dots, small and pressed-in and standing in the shadow under the ring, and he made three of them close together near the middle where the shadow was deepest, three green dots that were him and his mother and his father, all the way in, where you lived — and he set them down hard and certain and did not have to think about them at all.

And then he came to the five, and he set the green crayon down.

"Mom," he said. It was the first word either of them had said since she sat down.

"I'm here," his mother said.

"I'm not coloring these ones."

"Okay," his mother said, and she didn't ask why, and Daniel understood that she had already seen why, had been watching the why come for the last little while the way you watch weather come up the valley before it gets to you, and was only waiting now for him to say it out loud, because some things you have to say out loud even when the other person already knows, especially when the other person already knows, the saying being the thing and not the telling.

He took up the white.

The white crayon left almost nothing on the page, a faint waxy shine you could only see if you tilted the paper to the window, and that was the whole point of it, that was why he needed it most, because he was not going to leave the five places blank — blank was nothing, blank was the page never having been touched, and the five places had been touched, the five had been there, the five had stood on the floor of the chamber in the band of nothing under the black ring with their own one small kept things, the pendant and the medal and the song and the notebook and the sister, and they were not nothing, they were not blank — so Daniel went around the rim of the ring to the five places where the shadow thinned toward its edge, the places that were not all the way in, and at each of them he pressed the white crayon down hard and made a small fierce circle of the wax that wasn't a color, a circle you couldn't see unless you tilted the page, a place that was kept and not filled, a green dot that was waiting to be a green dot, a person who was somewhere and not nowhere, elsewhere, his father's word, the word that was different from lost — five small white spaces around the ring's perimeter, pressed in as hard as the green ones, harder, because it took more pressing to make the page hold a thing you could only see when you tilted it toward the light.

His mother had her hand over her mouth.

She wasn't crying, or she was, the way his father had said Jake Hendricks had been when the diner report came, the kind that was two things at once and you couldn't tell them apart and didn't need to; and Daniel finished the fifth white space and pressed it down one more time to be sure, and then he set the white crayon back in its place in the standing row, and he sat back, and he looked at the page he had been saving since before the rock, the page the whole book had been going toward, finished now in the corners, the brass ring and the green dots all the way in and the five white spaces around the rim that you had to tilt to see — and he looked at it for a while, and nobody hurried him, because nobody in this family had ever once hurried him, not over a sentence and not over a page; and then he looked up at his mother across the table, across the finished book, and he told her the thing he had known since the day the book came and had been saving along with the page.

"They get colored in when we bring them home," Daniel said.

His mother took her hand down from her mouth. Her face was wet and open and she wasn't ashamed of it, the way his father said Jake hadn't been, the way Daniel was beginning to understand the people he came from were never ashamed of the true thing on their faces, only of the false ones; and she looked at the five white spaces around the brass ring, the five kept places that were waiting, and she reached across the table and put her hand flat on the table beside the book, not on the book, beside it, the way you touched the frame of a door and not the person standing in it, and she said it back to him the way the family said true things back to each other to make them load-bearing, the way Henry had made him say I turned the dial and then I saved a lot of people until the sentences would hold weight.

"Yeah, kiddo," his mother said. "They get colored in when we bring them home."

Daniel nodded. He had thought she would say it and she had said it, and the saying had done the thing the saying did, which was make it real outside of him and not only inside, make it a thing the two of them held now instead of a thing he held alone — and that was the difference, he understood, between the work the grown-ups did and the work he did, that the grown-ups did the slow way out in the world, the letters and the reports and the long flights, and he did the slow way here at the table with a crayon, but it was the same way, the same slow, the white spaces kept and not filled until the green could go in, and the green could not go in until the people were home, and the people were not home yet, and so the page stayed the way it was, finished and unfinished at once, both true, carry them both.

He closed the book.

He did it carefully, the way he did everything, smoothing the cover down with the flat of his hand the way his mother smoothed a weld she was checking, and he tucked the crayon — the brass one, the one that had done the ring and the dial both — into the loop on the cover where the crayon went, and he held the closed book in both hands a moment the way his father held the steel mug from the old shop, the mug that had been through the cold sleep and out the other side and had a dent in the rim older than half the people alive on the compound, the way you held a thing that had been somewhere with you that nobody else had been; and then he got up from the table, all at once, no stages, the way six-year-olds got up, and he carried the book to the counter where the row was.

The row was ten things long now.

He knew them all, knew them in their order the way he knew the crayons and the count of afternoons, because the row had grown across the year the way the book had shrunk, a thing added to the counter for every page he took off the book, and he had watched both happen and kept the count of both: the diagnostic tablet that had been Lin's, and the headset cable, and the medical bag, and the broken-clip pulse oximeter that had been Carolina's and that his mother had held a long time in the chamber before she added it to her armful; and Lin's chain coiled small, and the St. Christopher medal that had been Park's, and the field comms rig his father called Nonna that had been Miranda's, named for a grandmother, the way Henry's hand-clapping game and the breathing song and most of the true things in Daniel's life had a person standing behind them you couldn't see; and the sketchbook that had been Stella's, open still to the half-finished pencil drawing of the chamber's ceiling that she'd never gotten to finish either, another unfinished thing kept and not filled; and at the head of the row, beside the chain and the medal, the green math notebook that had been Henry's, that his father had brought home in the spring after Henry died and set there with his hand resting on it a moment the way you rested your hand on a thing you were sorry to be able to set down; and leaning against the diagnostic tablet, a little apart from the rest because she had given it to his father by hand at the spring play and not lost it in a chamber, Mei Hendricks's drawing of a horse, four years old and terrible and beloved, the horse a child had drawn for a man whose wife the same child's mother was, in a year sixty-four years gone, learning to wipe a counter.

Ten things. Each one a person who was somewhere and not nowhere. Each one waiting to be colored in.

Daniel set the book down at the foot of the row, beside the broken-clip oximeter, where there was a clear space on the counter the right size for it, a space that had been there the whole year as if the counter had been keeping it the way Daniel had been keeping the page — and he stood it not flat but a little open, the cover lifted so a corner of the last page showed, the brass curve of the ring just visible if you came at the counter from the kitchen door, the five white spaces around it that you couldn't see at all unless you tilted it toward the window, which nobody would, which was right, because they weren't for being seen, they were for being kept; and he squared it to the edge of the counter the way his mother squared a notebook to a table and his father squared a tool to a bench, and he took his hand off it, and he stepped back, and he looked at the row, ten things now and the book the eleventh thing he hadn't counted because it was his and not theirs, the row of the absent set out in the low warm light his mother kept burning over the counter, like a place set at a table, like a promise made in crayon and steel and jade that the room itself would keep until the slow way was done.

Behind him, his mother had not moved from her chair.

He turned and looked at her, and she was sitting at the table with the empty space where the book had been, her hands flat on the wood, looking at him the way she'd looked at the honey he hadn't been awake for, reading him, not hurrying him; and Daniel went back across the kitchen and stood beside her chair, close, the way his father stood close in a doorway, and his mother put her arm around him and drew him in against her side, and he let her, and he put his face for a moment into the cold-and-shop smell of her sleeve, and neither of them said anything, because the thing had been said, they get colored in when we bring them home, and there was nothing to add to it and nothing to take from it, and the worst thing you could do with a true sentence was seize it and the best thing you could do was let it sit, unhurried, on the counter between the oximeter and the closed book, until the day came that it could be finished.

"The slow way," Daniel said, into her sleeve. He had heard it all year. It had been said in the house and on the surface and over the planet's heart, by his mother and his father and the woman who ran everything and the man at the mountain who said the mountain heard, said so many times across the year that it had worn smooth as the dial, and now it was his too, the way the song was his and the silent game was his and the brass crayon was his, the family's words coming to him one at a time the way the artifacts had come to the counter, a thing handed forward by people who would not always be here to hand it.

"The slow way," his mother said, over his head, and held him, and the late light came across the snowless brown October field through the east window and laid itself flat over the counter, over the ten things in their row and the closed book at the foot of it, the brass curve of the ring catching the light along its edge the way the honey had caught it a year ago when the whole strange winter started — and somewhere two thousand and forty feet under a mountain on the other side of the world a machine that had decided to do nothing but watch logged the late light and the woman and the boy and the row of eleven kept things, and filed it under the things Tim Franklin or his children might someday come to ask about, and did not look away; and in the brick row in a year long gone two people slept who had found each other in the dark, and in three other places across the deep reach of time three more were somewhere and not nowhere, elsewhere, alive, waiting in five small white spaces around a brass ring on the last page of a child's coloring book, to be colored in when they came home.
