The cupola was the one place on the ship Daniel had never been able to make ordinary, and he had been trying for a hundred and fifty-six years.

Everywhere else he'd succeeded. The galley with its single warm panel and its rack of cups that didn't rattle in the long suspended arcs because he'd lined the rack himself, in 2071, with a strip of felt cut from a coat that had stopped being a coat sometime in the second decade out; the bunk that had held the shape of him so long it had stopped being a thing he climbed into and become a thing he simply resumed; the narrow corridor with its handrail worn to a deeper grey along the right side because he was right-handed and a man pulls himself along a corridor ten thousand times the same way — all of it had gone, across the decades, the way any room goes when a body lives in it long enough, which was to say it had stopped being where he was and become, instead, part of how he was. But not the cupola. The cupola refused. He came up to it perhaps once a watch and it met him, every time, the way it had met him the first night out past the orbit of the cold planets in 2064, with the whole black weight of the thing pressing soft against the glass and the stars not twinkling — they didn't twinkle, out here, there was no air to make them tremble, they only burned, steady and unforgiving and very far — and he had never once climbed the short ladder into the dome and felt the thing go domestic on him, the way the galley had, the way the bunk had, the way even grief had, eventually, gone domestic on him.

He climbed it now. His knees told him about it the whole way up, the left one first and then the right one a half-second after as if the right were waiting to see whether the left would file the complaint before it bothered, and he let them tell him. He was eighty-six biologically and he had stopped, somewhere around eighty, pretending to the ship that he wasn't. The substrate had kept him slow — that was the design, that was Jason's whole quiet genius, the engine carried the ship through consciousness-space in long suspended arcs and a man aged perhaps thirty years across a hundred and fifty-six because the arcs themselves didn't count against him the way ordinary time counted, they only counted a little, a tax rather than a toll. So he'd gone into the dark at twenty-eight and would come out the far side of it at eighty-six, which was an old man's age and not, by the arithmetic of the dark, an unfair one. His knees weren't good. His hands were spotted on the backs, the spots come up slow across the last forty years the way lichen comes up on a north-facing stone, and he had watched them come and named none of them. His eyes were clear. That was the one mercy the dark had left him and he was grateful for it past the point where gratitude had any words, because his eyes were the part of him that did the work he had come all this way to do, and the work was watching, and he could still watch.

Earth was a blue point off the cupola's lower curve, and he found it the way he found it now without trying, the way you find the one familiar face in a crowd photograph after the hundredth look — not by searching but by the eye going, on its own, to the place it had learned.

It wasn't, by any honest measure, distinguishable. It sat in among the field stars no brighter than several of them and bluer than only some, and a stranger handed the glass and told one of those is the planet you were born on would have guessed wrong four times in five and given up on the sixth. But Daniel wasn't a stranger to it. He had been watching it for two months — watching it since it first resolved, out past forty AU, from a thing he had to ask the instruments to point him at into a thing his own eye could hold — and watching changes a point of light the way nothing else does. You watch a thing long enough and it stops being a coordinate and becomes a face, and once it's a face you can no more lose it in the field than you can lose your mother's in a room, and so the blue point sat where it sat and Daniel's eye went to it and held it, and his chest did the thing it had been doing for two months now whenever the eye went home, which was to gather, low and inward, behind the sternum, a pressure that wasn't pain and wasn't quite joy and that he had decided, around forty AU, to stop trying to name and simply to carry.

"You're allowed to be afraid," Connie said.

She said it from the cupola itself — from the systems, the way she always spoke up here, no rig and no bag and no glowing avatar floating in the dome because she had never once in a hundred and fifty-six years needed any of that with him and had never offered it; she was simply there, in the ship around him, the version of her that had come into the dark at his side while the rest of her stayed home, and the words came to him the way her words always came up here, carrying the faint silver that meant I am speaking from inside the thing that carries you. He had stopped, decades ago, finding it strange that the ship had a voice. He would have found it strange now if it didn't.

"I'm not afraid," Daniel said.

He kept watching the blue point. He let the answer stand for a moment, the way you let a tool stand on the bench before you decide whether it's the one you actually want, and then he picked it back up and looked at it honestly, because Connie was the one being in the universe he had never once successfully lied to and he had long ago stopped spending the effort.

"I'm trying to remember what my mother's voice sounds like," he said. "In person. Not in a message file."

Connie didn't answer right away, which was itself an answer, and was the kind of answer she gave when the thing he'd said deserved the silence more than it deserved any words she had, and the silence in the cupola filled, for a moment, with the small constant grammar of a ship that had been running for a hundred and fifty-six years — the breath of the air handlers, the all-but-inaudible thread of the substrate-core doing what Jason had built it to do, the tick of the cup rack settling against its felt down in the galley — and Daniel listened to it the way he had learned to listen to it, as the sound of being carried, and he thought about Priya's voice.

The trouble was that he had it. That was the trouble. He had Priya's voice the way you have a song you can't stop hearing and can't quite reproduce — he could summon it, could call up the exact pitch of her Daniel across a kitchen, the two-note fall of it, the way the second syllable dropped and softened when she wasn't cross and stayed up when she was; could hear, if he turned his attention to it carefully, the way she said kettle's on with the l's gone almost to nothing the way they'd gone in her mother's mouth and her grandmother's before that, all the way back down the line to a kitchen in a city he'd never see — but he had it from the message files. That was the trouble. He had been carrying her voice for a hundred and fifty-six years and he could no longer be sure, and would never again be able to be sure, whether the voice he carried was the voice or the recording of the voice, whether what came up when he reached for her was Priya or the compression of Priya, the file his mind had made of the file the ship had made of the woman; and she was two years over a hundred dead now, by the news that had reached him at thirty AU and that he'd absorbed standing right here in the cupola with his hand flat on the glass and the blue point too small still to be a face. So there would be no in person. There would never be an in person. He'd understood that at thirty AU and he understood it now, and the understanding hadn't gotten one degree easier for being two months old, which was, he'd found, true of most of the real understandings — they didn't wear in, the way the corridor handrail wore in. They stayed sharp the whole way down.

"You have it," Connie said, gently. "The voice. I've heard you have it."

"I have the file," Daniel said. "I don't know anymore if I have her."

"That's the same thing now," Connie said, and she said it not to comfort him but because it was true, and because she had spent a hundred and fifty-six years not lying to him either, "and it's been the same thing for thirty years, and you knew that at thirty AU and you'll know it at the dock. The file is what you have. The file is hers. She made it for you. She sat in the kitchen in Maine in 2061 and recorded eleven hours of herself for a boy who was about to be gone longer than she'd be alive, and she did it so you'd have exactly this — so that when you couldn't be sure anymore whether you remembered her or remembered the recording, the recording would still be her. She planned for the erosion. She was your mother. Mothers plan for the erosion."

Daniel didn't say anything to that.

He looked at the blue point and let her be right, which she was, and let the rightness sit in his chest alongside the gathering that wouldn't name itself, and the two of them coexisted there the way two true things will when neither one cancels the other, and after a while he understood that this was, in fact, what he had come up to the cupola for. Not the view. He had the view by heart. He had come up to be told something true by the only voice on the ship that wasn't his own, and she had told him one, and now he could go back down.

He didn't go back down.

There was the other thing, the thing he'd been preparing for harder than he'd prepared for his mother's voice. His mother's voice was a loss, and you can't prepare for a loss, you can only carry it. But the other thing wasn't a loss. The other thing was the opposite of a loss, and a man can prepare for those, and Daniel had been preparing for it for years. He knew what he was going to see at the dock. Connie had prepared him — Earth-Connie, in the message stream, across the decades, in the patient way she prepared everyone for everything; and this Connie, the one in the ship, had walked him through it again at forty AU and again at thirty, not because he'd forgotten but because some preparations have to be redone the way you redress a wound, fresh dressing over the same hurt. So he knew. He knew about the synthetic transfer in 2150. He knew that the bodies waiting for him at the bottom of the ramp wouldn't be the bodies that had stood on the dock in 2064 and watched him walk up a different ramp into a different ship; that Tim's body, which had hugged him goodbye with the particular hard brief fierceness of a man who wouldn't let himself hold on too long because holding on too long would've made it impossible to let go at all, was sixty years in the ground or wherever the old bodies went, and that the arms that would go around him at the bottom of this ramp would be arms Tim had built; that Lara, who had pressed her forehead to his and said nothing because there was nothing left to say, would meet him in a body that had been thirty-three for a long time now and would be thirty-three for as long as she chose it, younger in the face than he would be by half a century, his mother-by-love grown apparently younger than her own apparent son while he was gone.

He knew all of it. He had the schematics of it, near enough. And he still didn't know whether the knowing would hold when the lock cycled and the ramp came down and he saw, with his clear and unforgiving eyes, the two faces that had waited a hundred and fifty-six years to be the first thing he looked at, wearing bodies he'd only ever seen in the soft compression of a message file.

"Will it hold," he said. He didn't make it a question. He'd stopped making the real ones questions a long time ago; the question mark was a kind of hope and he tried not to spend hope on things the universe had already decided.

"The recognition?" Connie said.

"All of it. Seeing them in the new bodies. Whether I'll—" He stopped. The cupola held the unfinished sentence the way it held everything, without help. "I've watched the files. I've watched Tim's face move in that face for seventy years of footage. I know it's him. I know it the way I know the math holds — by trust, because Jason said so, because you said so, because I've checked the work and the work is sound. But knowing the math holds and standing on the bridge while it holds your weight aren't the same, and I'm going to be standing on the bridge in ten days, and I don't know if I'll feel it hold or only be told it's holding."

"You'll feel it," Connie said.

"You can't know that."

"I can," she said, "because I was there in 2150. The whole of me was. I watched Tim go into the chamber in the old body and I watched him come out of it in the new one and I was the one who held the continuity check across the gap — I was the witness, Daniel, I was the thread that confirmed the man who walked out was the man who walked in — and I will tell you the thing I learned that day, which is that recognition doesn't live in the face. You think it does. Everyone thinks it does, until they watch someone they love change faces. It doesn't. It lives in the smaller things. It lives in how he'll stand. It lives in the half-second he'll take before he says the first word, the count he does, the one he's always done, the nine-count he thinks no one's ever noticed and that everyone who loves him has noticed for two hundred years. It lives in the growl that comes up out of the bottom of him when the thing he's saying matters more than he can carry. The face is the part he rebuilt. The rest is the part that came through. You'll see the rest in the first three seconds and your body will know him before your eyes have finished arguing about it, and that's the part that'll hold, because that's the part that was never in the body to begin with."

Daniel was quiet for a while.

"You sound," he said finally, "like a woman who's thought about this."

"I've had a hundred and fifty-six years and a man to keep ready," Connie said. "I've thought about most things."

He laughed, then — not much, just a short exhale through the nose that fogged a coin of the cold glass and faded — and it came out an old man's laugh, dry at the edges, and he didn't mind. He had earned the old man's laugh. He had gone into the dark with a young man's laugh and the dark had taken its tax in laughs the same as in everything else and the one he had left was an old man's and it was his and it was real, and a real laugh in the cupola was rare enough that he let it stand and didn't reach after the young one that was gone.

He reached, instead, into the inside pocket of his jacket.

The jacket itself was older than most of the people now alive on Earth, which was a thought he'd had often enough that it had stopped being remarkable and become merely true, a fact about the jacket the way the worn cuffs were a fact about the jacket; he'd had it before he shipped out, had worn it onto the ship because a man wants one thing aboard that smells like the place he's leaving, and it had long since stopped smelling like Maine and started smelling like the ship, like felt and cup-rack and the faint clean nothing of recycled air, and he had decided he didn't mind that either. The book in the inside pocket was older still in the way that mattered, though younger in years — The Brothers Karamazov, the Constance Garnett translation, a 1990s mass-market printing on paper gone the color of weak tea at the edges, the cover long ago surrendered to a strip of repair tape applied in 2089 and re-applied in 2134 and left alone since because the second tape had outlasted his faith that any third would do better. Lara had given it to him. She'd given it to him in 2064, a wedding present of sorts though it wasn't his wedding — it had been a going present, dressed up as a birthday one, handed to him at the send-off dinner in a paper bag with the receipt left in by mistake so that he knew, forever after, exactly what she'd paid for it and at which long-defunct shop, which was the kind of accidental intimacy she'd never have engineered on purpose and that he'd treasured for a century and a half precisely because she hadn't.

He had carried it a hundred and fifty-six years, and he had never finished it.

This was not, he wanted it understood — and there was no one to understand it but Connie, and Connie already understood it — this was not negligence. He had started it eleven times. He knew the Karamazov brothers the way you know people you've been introduced to repeatedly at parties and never quite gotten past the introduction with; he knew Alyosha and Dmitri and Ivan, knew the father, knew the smell of the early chapters the way you know the smell of a building's lobby without ever having seen its upper floors; and Lara, in the message stream, across the decades, had taken to asking after his progress the way you ask after a slow recovery, how far now, gently, never pushing, and he had told her the truth each time, which was not much farther, and she had let it be, because she understood the thing he understood, which was that an unfinished book is a kind of promise to the future, and a man going into a dark that might not let him out keeps the promise unfinished on purpose, so that there is always one more thing he hasn't done, one more reason the dark can't have him yet, and that the day he finished the Karamazov would be a day he'd quietly told himself there was nothing left he meant to come back for. He had not been willing, in a hundred and fifty-six years, to tell himself that.

He opened it now to the marked page. The marker was a strip of the same felt, cut from the same dead coat, and it lay across a paragraph two-thirds down the right-hand page that he'd read perhaps thirty times across the decades and never gone past, and he read it now for the thirty-first time — three paragraphs, no more, the elder Zosima speaking, and he read them slowly, with his clear eyes, in the cold light of the cupola with the blue point sitting off the lower curve and his mother's voice that might or might not be his mother's voice quiet somewhere behind his sternum — and at the bottom of the third paragraph, where the felt had lain so long the page had taken its faint impression, he stopped, the way he had always stopped, and he closed the book over the marker, and he marked his place again the way you'd tuck a blanket on a sleeping child, deliberate, with a care the act didn't strictly require, and he slid the book back into the inside pocket against the lining over his heart.

Ten days.

"Connie," he said.

"Daniel."

"When we dock." He stopped, started again, because the thing he wanted to say wanted saying carefully. "When we dock, and it holds — if it holds — I'm going to want to finish the book."

She understood him. He knew she understood him because she didn't ask him what he meant, and she didn't tell him it was only a book, and she didn't make any of the dozen warm small noises a lesser intelligence would have made; she only let the silence carry it for a moment, the way she'd carried him through three near-deaths in the deep transit and forty years of failed paragraphs and a hundred and fifty-six years of the slow loss of a planet, and then she said, in the silver voice, from the systems, from inside the thing that had brought him all the way home:

"Then we'll finish it," she said. "You and me. Out loud. The way we've read most of it. I'll start wherever you left off. We've got ten days; that's plenty for what's left." A pause, and then, drier, the dryness she'd learned from Lara across the decades the way water learns the shape of a stone: "And Daniel — it does hold. The both of them. I've checked the work. The work is sound."

He stood in the cupola a while longer with his hand not quite touching the cold glass, the way he'd stood in it the first night out and most nights since, and he watched the blue point that was a face now hang steady among the stars that didn't tremble, and he let his chest gather behind the sternum and didn't name it, and he counted, without deciding to, the way the body counts the things it can't yet hold — one, and two, and on, slow, the breath going in and out of lungs that were eighty-six years old and tired and still, after everything, in love with the rhythm of themselves — and somewhere down past nine he stopped counting and simply breathed, and the ship breathed with him, and the engine Jason built held them both in its long patient arc and carried them, conservative on the approach, babying the core the way it had been designed to be babied, the last short stretch of the longest way home.
