The substrate-direct call came at four in the afternoon on a Wednesday in March, three years after Ingrid's funeral, when Park was at the kitchen table cutting a pear for himself and thinking about nothing in particular except the fact that the pear was firm in a way that pears in 2280 were rarely firm, and that he should ask Solveig whether the agro-ring had changed the cultivar without telling him.

The tablet on the corner of the table chimed in the soft tone reserved for personal substrate calls, and the band at the top read Jason Franklin, Mihai, and Park set the knife down on the cutting board with the half-pear under it, and he wiped his hand on the dish towel that lived over his shoulder when he was at the kitchen table, and he picked up the tablet and accepted.

Jason's face came up in the small window. Jason was two hundred and six years old in subjective count, and he wore a synthetic body that he had chosen, somewhere around year one hundred and forty, to look about thirty-eight, with the dark hair and the long Franklin jaw and the small habitual quirk at the left corner of the mouth that Tim's face also carried. Jason was in his lab, which Park had visited once, twenty years back, and which Park remembered as a long room with a high ceiling and a grid of small benches and a great deal of light coming in from somewhere Park had not been able to identify. Jason was in his work coat. Jason was not smiling, but his eyes had something in them that Park did not at first recognize, because he had not seen it in Jason's eyes since Jason was a young man in his late teens explaining to Park, in the year 2179, what Jason was going to spend the rest of his life on.

Hwan, Jason said. Are you alone.

Park said yes. Park said Yusuf is at the school. Mercedes is on Mihai. I am cutting a pear.

Put the pear down, Jason said. And sit. I want you to sit for this.

Park sat. He had been standing. He had not realized he had been standing. He sat in the kitchen chair Ingrid had liked and he set the tablet on the table propped against the salt cellar and he put both his hands flat on the table on either side of it, the way Ingrid had done on the day she had told him about the protocol.

All right, Park said. I am sitting.

I have it, Jason said. Lin's transmitter. The one she buried on Haven's ridge. I can hold it steady now, all the way back, on one address, on one morning. I have had it for eighteen months. I have been running pinpoint test deliveries to dead-letter targets — places where if it failed, it would not matter, and where if it succeeded, only I would know. It has succeeded forty-one times. It has failed twice in ways I now understand. It is real. The bandwidth is small and the content is restricted, but the delivery is real.

Park did not say anything. The kitchen had gone very quiet. The hum of the residence's air system, which was always there and which Park had stopped hearing in 2174, was suddenly the loudest thing in the room.

Hwan, Jason said. I can put one envelope on one doorstep on one morning. Anywhere. Any *when. The math says backward as well as forward. Lin's machine does the sending. My part is keeping it pointed at one doorstep long enough for an envelope to land. I have been thinking, for the last six months, about who to ask first. I want to ask you.*

There were a few seconds in which Park did not understand. He understood the words. He had heard the words. He had parsed them. But the meaning of the words did not arrive in the same instant as the words themselves, the way meaning sometimes does not, when a man is being told something his life has not prepared him to hear.

Then the meaning arrived, all at once, in the way a wave breaks.

He set the tablet face-down on the table.

He did not say anything for a long time.

Jason waited. Jason had always known, since boyhood, when to wait. He had inherited that from his father.

Park picked up the tablet. He did not turn it over. He held it face-down against his palm, and he said into the back of it, because he could not yet look at Jason's face, How many.

Jason's voice came through clear. All of them, Hwan. Every letter you've written. Every annual letter to Stella's grave for one hundred and seven years. I can put them in her mailbox. I can put them on the dates you choose. The dates have to be in her own life. The spring after she sells the business, ideally; she's most at peace then, and the bandwidth is cleanest in that window. We can pick a single Tuesday morning. One delivery, all of them at once.

Park turned the tablet over.

He looked at Jason's face on the small screen. Jason was a man Park had known since Jason was four years old. Park had taught Jason to read a paper sea chart in 2189, in the hangar, on the chalkboard, with Jason's small finger on the printed soundings. Park had stood up at Jason's first marriage in 2208 and at his second marriage in 2231 and had been a witness at the naming of Jason's first daughter and his second daughter and his three sons and at the naming of every grandchild he had been invited to. Park had held Jason's hand for an hour in 2232 the night Jason's first wife had died, because Jason's father had been in transit and Jason had wanted, for that one hour, a man who had buried a wife already to sit with him in the dark. Park knew Jason's face the way he knew the worn place on the throat mic.

Park looked at Jason's face and Jason looked at him, and Park began to weep.

He had not wept since Ingrid. He had not wept at the funeral, and he had not wept on the terrace, and he had not wept at the headstone, and he had not wept in the bed afterward, and he had not wept at any point in the three years since, and now he was weeping at the kitchen table, with the half-pear browning on the cutting board behind him, and his shoulders shook the way an old man's shoulders shake, which is not very much on the outside but a great deal on the inside, and the tablet sat propped against the salt cellar with Jason's quiet face on it, and Jason did not speak, because Jason had inherited the waiting from his father.

Park wept for ten minutes.

He wiped his face with the dish towel from over his shoulder.

He said Jason. You are sure.

Jason said I am sure.

Park said *It will not — the timeline — *

Jason said No. Hwan, no. It is a delivery. It is a postal service. We have run the math and run the math. The content is restricted. No predictive material. No future-tech references. No identifying any future-people in Stella's life by name or by description. Only love, gratitude, memory, and naming what is already known to Stella herself. We will read every letter together before we send. Your one hundred and seven letters and any new cover note you write. Your letters are already mostly that, because that is the kind of man you are. We will trim two or three lines from across the whole stack and we will be fine. The delivery window is the spring of 2008 — the house on Greenwood, the business sold, after she has accepted the not-knowing. The letters will land as a gift. Not as a paradox-trap. We have done the work. I would not be calling you if we had not done the work.

Park said All right.

Park said Jason, all right. Yes.

Jason closed his eyes for one second and opened them.

Thank you, Jason said. Hwan. Thank you for trusting me on this.

Park said I have trusted you on harder things than this. You are Tim's son. Of course I trust you on this.

Park said Jason. Wait. One more thing. I want to call Lin. Will you stay on or shall I call you back.

Jason said Call me back when you are ready. There is no hurry. Take a week. Take a month. The window is open from now until I close it, and I am not closing it.

The call ended.

Park sat at the table for a few more minutes. He looked at the half-pear on the board. He picked up the knife. He cut the rest of the pear into slices the way Ingrid had liked them cut, in long thin wedges, and he laid them out on a small plate, and he ate two of them slowly and put the rest in the cooler. Then he picked up the tablet and he opened the substrate-direct line to Mihai, to the residence three terraces down from Tim and Lara's where Lin lived in her synthetic body that she had chosen in 2127 to look about thirty-five.

Lin answered on the second tone.

She was in her own kitchen. She had a cup of tea in her hand. She was wearing the dark gray work coat she had been wearing the first time Park ever saw her in that body, which was now one hundred and ninety years ago. She had not changed. She would not change. The advanced-brain principle that the saga had not yet named aloud in 2280 was already operative in Lin's posture at her own kitchen counter at an hour that was midnight on Mihai when it was four in the afternoon in Norway, and Lin was awake, because Lin was always awake at the hour Park called.

Hwan, Lin said.

She looked at him.

Lin had known Park's face for a longer time and through a finer instrument than anyone alive. She set the tea down. She said Hwan, what is it.

Park said Lin. Jason can hold your transmitter now. The one on the ridge. He can put one envelope in a mailbox on a chosen morning. He has offered me the delivery. He says we can send all my letters to Stella in one bundle, into her mailbox in her last decade in Atlanta.

Lin did not move.

Lin's face — the synthetic face, the chosen thirty-five-year-old face, with the small fine lines at the corners of the eyes that she had asked the body's makers to put in because she had wanted her own laugh lines back — went through three expressions in about a second and a half. The first was the disbelief. The second was the comprehension. The third was the thing that was Lin and only Lin, which was the sudden complete decision that came when Lin had been waiting for a thing without knowing she had been waiting for it.

Lin said My ridge box. Lin said After all this time.

Lin said Yes.

Lin said I want to send too.

Lin said I have one I never wrote because I knew she'd never get it. Tonight I write it.

Park said I knew you would say that.

Lin said I knew you knew.

They sat in their two kitchens, on two worlds, and they did not say anything for a moment. Then Lin said Hwan. Thank you. For calling me first.

Park said Of course I called you first. Who else would I have called.

Lin laughed, once, the dry small laugh she had, and she picked up her tea and she drank from it, and she said I will write tonight. I will send it to you within the week. You assemble. You order. You manage. You are better at the ordering than I am. Send me the final stack to read before Jason takes it.

Park said I will.

They closed the line.

He spent the next month assembling. He did not write new letters. The letters he had written across one hundred and seven years were already what they needed to be, because he had written them the way he had written them, which was the way of a man writing to a woman he had never met out of a debt he had decided to pay one page at a time without ever being repaid. He pulled the folder of copies from the third shelf of the small library along the inside wall. He laid them out on the kitchen table in order, by year. The first letter, the one from 2174, was on a torn page from his first notebook, and the page was now over a century old and slightly yellow at the edges where his hand had held it before he tore it free; he had photocopied it onto a fresh page when the original began to crumble in 2210, and he laid both copies on the table and chose the photocopy for the delivery, because the original was his and he wanted to keep it. The hundred and seventh letter, the one from October just past, was crisp and white. He laid them all out, one to a place, and he walked the length of the table, and he read each one, and he found two lines that he marked with a soft pencil to be discussed with Jason and possibly trimmed: a line in the 2191 letter that mentioned by name a woman who would be born in 2034 and whom Stella might theoretically have known of through Lin's daughter Eleanor's network in Atlanta, and a line in the 2218 letter that mentioned the existence of Mihai by name, which would have meant nothing to Stella but which was a future-place name and had to come out. Two lines, in one hundred and seven letters. He thought, as he marked them, that he had been more careful for a hundred years than he had given himself credit for. He thought that the discipline of writing to a stranger had taught him to write to a stranger, and that the stranger he had been writing to was not after all unreachable.

Lin's letter came on the fourteenth of April, in the monthly Mihai mail packet, on her own paper, in her own small neat hand. He did not open it. He laid it on top of the stack, and he wrote his cover note on a fresh page from the current year's notebook and tore it free.

The cover note read:

Dear Stella,

You do not know me. I knew Lin. I have written to you for one hundred and seven years, beginning in February of 2174, when I came to know your story. The letters that follow this one are those letters, in order of the year I wrote them. I have ordered them so you can read them in sequence or out of sequence as you please; each one stands alone. There is also one letter from Lin, which she wrote this April, the only letter from Lin to you that exists. She asked that hers be opened first among the bundle, after this cover note. I am very glad to finally meet you. Thank you for staying when you could have gone. I think about your courage often.

— Hwan Park
Norway
April, 2280

He sealed the cover note in the envelope on top of the stack. The envelope was a 2003 Atlanta postal service envelope, sourced through Standing Crow's network on Mihai, indistinguishable from the envelopes Stella herself would have used in the years the bundle would land. The stack was tied with a length of cotton string. The whole bundle was the size of a small cake box.

He called Jason.

Jason came to Norway in person, in the slow ship, because this was not the kind of work he was willing to do across substrate. He sat at Park's kitchen table for three days and they read every letter together, and Jason agreed with Park's two flagged lines and trimmed them with a soft pencil and his own initials, and Jason proposed a third line in the 2235 letter that referenced a Daughter World indirectly and that Park had not caught, and Park agreed and they trimmed it. They closed the bundle. They sealed it.

Jason chose the date with Park: the first Tuesday in May of 2008, in the morning, before the post office had run its own delivery for the day, in the mailbox at the foot of the drive of a house on Greenwood Avenue, in Atlanta. Stella, in May of 2008, was fifty-four. She had sold her business the autumn before. She was at peace, by all the records Lin had pieced together. She was already past the worst of it. She would find the bundle on a Tuesday morning when she walked down the drive in her slippers, as she did every morning.

Jason said I'll send confirmation when it lands.

Park said I don't need confirmation. I know you. It will land.

Jason said I will send it anyway.

Park said Send it to Lin. She will want it. I will trust the silence.

Jason did the work in the night, a week later, on the ridge above the old Haven entrance in Maine, where Lin's transmitter still sat in the rock she had buried it in during her Atlanta years. Sam-Gamma had dug it out in the autumn of 2054, and Haven had kept it running ever since. Yusuf came. Park stood a little way off in the dark with his hands in his coat pockets. Jason put one hand flat on the old housing and the other on the bundle, and the transmitter made a small low hum for about forty seconds and then was quiet. Jason looked up from it and said Done. He said the dates do not translate cleanly between his frame and ours. I cannot tell you exactly when in our time the delivery was; the math allows a window of about eleven minutes on either side of now. Within that window: it is done.

Park said Thank you.

Park went home.

He did not know exactly when in his own time the delivery had occurred. He did not press Jason on the timestamps. He went home, and he made coffee, and he sat at the kitchen table where Ingrid had told him about the protocol and where he had picked up the tablet to call Jason and where he had assembled the stack and where Jason and he had read every page, and he poured a second cup out of habit, and he drank both cups.

He slept that night for nine hours.

He had not slept for nine hours in three years.

In the morning he wrote in the notebook, in his usual small hand: Reached.

That was all.
