### The Apartment 56-C Arc — Maya Valenti and James Iwobi

Seven beats and a coda. Sits between Chapter Five (THE DAY THE COFFEE CHANGED) and Chapter Seven (THE DISCONTINUATION NOTICE). Day counts below are the mesh's — day 2,557 is the coffee morning. The arc runs twelve days. Beat 7 is two nights before the notice; the night between belongs to Elias.

Beat 1 — The Door Nine Floors Up

Day 2,558. The night after the coffee changed. Maya's POV.

She took the stairs.

There were nine flights of them between her floor and his. The elevator would have taken eleven seconds, and it would have asked her for a floor, and the floor would have gone into a log with her name beside it. The stairs asked nothing. The stairs logged a door swipe and a body going up, and nine flights of a woman going up was a thing the mesh had a category for: unscheduled cardiovascular activity, minor calorie variance. It would file that and think it understood her.

The stairwell door on forty-seven had a push bar she had never touched. Three years on this floor. She put her hand on it at 8:47 PM and the bar was colder than the hallway and gave with a sound like a filing cabinet. The mesh logged the swipe. Stairwell access, residential, non-emergency. Then it waited to see what else she would give it.

She gave it nothing. She went down.

By fifty her thighs had remembered they were biological. By fifty-three she had stopped pretending she did not know which apartment she was climbing to. By fifty-five the mesh was at her, fatigue threshold approaching, recommend return to unit, and she went past it the way she went past the ad copy on the transit walls.

Fifty-six.

The hallway on fifty-six was her own hallway with the number changed. Same lighting. Same matte wallpaper the color of a decision nobody made. Same doors at the same intervals, and at the far end the same smart-glass showing the same city arranged in the same calming palette she had learned yesterday morning was a lie. 56-A. 56-B.

56-C was different from ten feet away.

Garlic. Olive oil gone hot in a pan. Something green underneath it that the Building Wellness dispensary had no recipe for, because the compound that made it smell like that had been engineered out of the cultivar in Year Two. The HVAC was pulling at the door seam and losing. He was making it faster than the building could remove it.

She had his name. She had been carrying it since the corner of Meridian and 14th, thirty-eight hours ago, the way you carry a coin under your tongue. She checked it now, standing in front of his door.

James Iwobi.

Still there.

She raised her hand.

The mesh struck: a hard chemical line across her left temple, the one it kept for things it had a flag for. Unsanctioned residential contact. Off-roster social approach. Recommend return to unit. Her hand went heavy from the shoulder down. Her stomach turned over. The heat that had carried her up nine flights was pulled out of her chest, run through the filter bank, and handed back as a vague ache under the ribs, which was how the mesh translated wanting into something it could manage.

She lowered her hand.

It's late, she told herself, and the clock in the corner of her vision said 8:49, which was not late. He's eating. He was cooking, which was worse. I have nothing to bring. That one was true. You did not arrive at a kitchen like that with your hands empty. Her grandmother had a word for people who did, and the word had not survived the smoothing, but the rule had.

She went back down the stairs.

On forty-seven the hallway smelled like nothing. She had lived three years beside that fact without once noticing it.

In her unit she did not turn the lights on. The smart-surfaces tracked her by infrared into the kitchen and held the lights at ready and did not deploy them, because she was not requesting them, and she sat at the table in the dark with Elias's phone in the drawer beside eight paper bills she had not touched in seven years, and the smell of another man's dinner still in her nose, and she said the name once, out loud, to hear it stay.

"James Iwobi."

It stayed.

The mesh logged the evening as minor olfactory deviation, sub-threshold, no action required.

It had been wrong about her for thirty-eight hours now and had not yet noticed the pattern.

Interlude — Forty-Three

Day 2,559. The pod. Short.

She went to work, because that was what you did.

The pod on forty-three was six feet by eight, and she had spent 2,559 mornings in it reading other people's waveforms for compliance, and this morning she read them with a name in her mouth and found the work did not require her. It never had. Her hands ran the dashboards. Something behind her hands held the name.

Priya came in three minutes late with the thermos and the containers and set a jalebi on the corner of Maya's desk without a word, which was the arrangement.

"You're humming," Priya said.

"I'm not."

"You were. Under the AC." Priya unscrewed the thermos. "It was nice. Don't do it near the sensors."

At 10:40 a man walked the corridor past the glass wall of her pod with a tablet under his arm and did not look in. Gray eyes. He had watched her work for seven years and she had not known it until yesterday, and now she knew it and he still did not look in, and she understood that the not-looking was a discipline, and that it was for her.

She ate the jalebi at 11:15. It was sweet the way sugar was sweet, and not the way the mesh said sugar was sweet, and she kept her face flat while she ate it.

Column C, Neural Compliance Percentage. She typed numbers into it all afternoon.

Beat 2 — The Freezer That Needs Filling

Day 2,560. 6:42 PM. The Building Wellness dispensary on twelve.

The dispensary was the building's grocery, if a grocery could be a room with no people in it. Twelve pickup windows. Cold cases keyed to each resident's nutritional profile. The mesh staggered every resident's shopping window across the evening so nobody had to pass anybody in the aisle, and in three years Maya had come down at 6:40 on her assigned nights and never once seen another human being at the herb cooler.

He was at the herb cooler.

He was holding a bag of dispensary basil, the hydroponic Genovese, and he was reading the label like a man who wanted to be found reading a label. He looked up when she came through the door. His face did a thing she had only seen on children, which was to fail to hide something and then decide not to try.

"I bought this for the mesh," he said, and held up the bag. "It likes to see the basil move through inventory. I cook with mine."

"It thinks you're using it."

"It thinks I'm a man who eats ordinary food at ordinary intervals. It's nearly right. The margin of error is the basil."

She nearly laughed. The mesh caught it in her diaphragm and held it there as a hiccup.

"How did you know my window," she said.

"I didn't." He put the bag in his basket. "I've been down here at 6:40 for nine days."

He stepped a half-pace toward her, to the edge of her space and no further. The mesh measured the distance and said nothing, because they were inside sanctioned-incidental range, and the mesh was a system that believed in distances.

"I made too much sauce last weekend." He said it the way a man says a line he has said to the wall a few times. "Half a quart of pesto in the freezer with no plan. You wouldn't have a freezer that needs filling."

She had a freezer. It contained eleven protein blocks in modified-atmosphere wrap, a bag of the dispensary's calibrated berries, and nothing that had ever been near a stove. The mesh was already at work on the part of her that wanted to say yes, taking the edge off it with a serotonin push that arrived as a thought, strange thing for a stranger to offer, in her own voice, which was how it did its best work.

"No," she said. "Thanks."

He looked at her.

She looked back.

He had heard what she meant. She knew because his mouth did what it had done in the elevator, the half-second where the laugh started, and he did not let it finish. He nodded once, like a man taking down a message in a code he had been waiting to be taught.

"All right. If the freezer changes its mind. Fifty-six-C." He picked up the basket. "It still smells like a kitchen."

He went to his window. She went to hers. Her order came through the slot in its gray tray: protein blocks, the berries, the electrolyte water, the coffee she had been drinking for seven years and had tasted on Wednesday. The mesh logged the encounter as neighborly courtesy, mesh-compliant, no action required, and rode up with her in the elevator, and did not know that the woman it was riding with had a half-quart of pesto that did not exist burning a hole in a freezer she had never opened for pleasure.

The splinter in her chest opened another half-inch.

She did not turn around.

In her unit she opened the freezer.

Eleven protein blocks. She took one out and read it. Complete nutrition, 640 kcal, formulated for Valenti, M., cycle 41. It was the temperature of a stone from a river. She stood with the freezer open and the cold coming out over her wrists until the appliance asked her, in text, whether she required assistance selecting an item.

She put the block back. She closed the door.

There was room in there for half a quart of anything.

Beat 3 — The Door She Knocked On

Day 2,561. 8:51 PM. Maya's POV.

She took the stairs again with a bottle in her hand.

Olive oil. The dispensary's plain Mediterranean blend, the only thing on her roster she could tap without a query, and she had tapped it at 6:41 and carried it upstairs and set it on her counter and looked at it for two hours while the apartment lowered the lights on schedule around her. It was a ridiculous offering and she had not bothered to talk herself out of it. Her grandmother had a rule about empty hands and the rule had outlived the woman, and the mesh, and seven years.

Fifty-four. Fifty-five. Fifty-six.

The hallway was warmer than it had any right to be. The HVAC was losing again.

At fifteen feet the smell had a shape. Basil and garlic under it, and over it something happening right now, oil meeting heat behind a closed door, the small violence of a pan. A man was making dinner at 8:51 PM alone, the way a woman had made dinner alone in a fire-escape apartment thirty-six years ago for a small girl who liked how the basil leaves felt when you rolled them between your fingers, and who had been told, later, by a machine, that she had never done that.

She stood in front of 56-C.

She raised her hand.

The mesh had pattern-matched. It hit harder than Thursday, and it talked faster. Repeat unsanctioned approach. Same target. Recommend return to unit. Recommend recalibration consult. Recommend —

She knocked.

Three short. Knuckle on steel. The mesh lost the end of its sentence and started again, wider: serotonin, dopamine, the gray-fog cocktail it kept for things that were getting away from it. She felt her own mind come up brighter under it, the way it had on the sky bridge with Elias, the noticing of the noticing. The part of her that watched the mesh work was a part the mesh had no protocol for.

Footsteps.

The door opened.

He was in a t-shirt with basil on his fingers and oil on the inside of his wrist, and he looked at her for a half-second with his face doing nothing, and then he smiled. A third smile, after the elevator's and the dispensary's, and it said you came, and nothing else.

"I was about to plate it," he said.

"I brought olive oil."

He looked at the bottle. He looked at her.

"Mediterranean blend."

"It's all they had."

"It's perfect. Come in."

She stepped over his threshold.

The kitchen was a kitchen.

That was the first thing, before anything else. A stove, with a flame on it, where the Meridian's floor plan called for a food-preparation node with a heating element under glass. A pan with sauce in it. A wooden spoon resting on a folded dishcloth beside the burner, because you did not put a wet spoon on a counter, because somebody had taught him that. Basil in coffee cans on the windowsill. Three of them, mismatched, the kind of can that had once held actual ground coffee, and the system had no opinion about coffee cans, so dirt in a can grew basil on the forty-fifth floor of a managed tower and nobody stopped it. Garlic on a wooden board. A loaf of something dark and dense that had not come through any window in this building. The light was wrong for the Meridian, warmer, lower. He had swapped the bulbs for incandescent equivalents the system had approved as aesthetic deviance, sub-threshold, and the room looked like a room a person lived in.

Her grandmother's fire escape, indoors, on the forty-fifth floor.

She set the oil on his counter and did not trust her face yet.

"Sit," he said. "Pasta's a minute out."

She sat. A small wooden table, two chairs. Two settings already laid. Fork, knife, a cloth napkin folded in thirds, which was how her grandmother folded napkins, which was not a thing she had known she knew. He had set the table for two. He had been setting it for two, she understood without asking, every night since the elevator. In case.

He worked the stove. Pasta into the water. The pesto stirred, smelled, adjusted with a pinch of something from a jar with no label. A garlic clove crushed under the flat of a knife with the side-of-the-hand strike of a man who had done it ten thousand times. She watched his hands because they were the most unmanaged thing she had seen in seven years and she wanted to see how they moved when nobody was optimizing them.

"Where did you learn it," she said.

"A line cook. Ligurian, about sixty, hands like this." He held up a fist. "Restaurant on Delancey, when there were restaurants with cooks in them. I was nineteen. He didn't measure anything and he hit me with a spoon when I did."

"That's not a Nigerian dish."

"No." He drained the pasta. "My mother made red stew that took four hours because she said anything faster was lying. Same principle. Different continent."

The mesh pushed at her. Unscheduled extended residential contact. Recommend return to unit. Recommend recalibration consult. It felt less like a wall than it had on Thursday. It felt like a wind. She had been leaning into wind for three days and she was getting better at it.

He plated.

He set the plate in front of her and she looked at it and did not move. Pasta. The sauce green and shining. A scatter of torn leaves over the top, the ten extra seconds nobody was paying him for. He set his own plate down across from her and sat and picked up his fork and waited.

She picked up hers.

She tasted it.

Her grandmother's kitchen came up through the floor of her. The fire escape, the cans, the watering can with the dent, a woman humming ninna nanna, ninna oh over a pot with no recipe because recipes were for people who had forgotten. Olive oil that had come out of a tree. Basil that had come out of dirt. Salt that had been in the ground before there were people to manage. A man who had cooked it at 8:30 PM for someone who had not yet knocked.

She put the fork down.

She put both hands flat on the table.

She cried. Not sobbing. Water moving. The mesh's tear-suppression protocols failed one after another like breakers tripping under a load they were never rated for, and James said nothing. He kept eating. After a minute he reached across and pushed the napkin a quarter-inch closer to her hand. He did not say here. He did not say it's all right. He put the napkin where she could reach it without asking for it.

She used it.

She picked up her fork and ate the rest of the plate.

He poured water from a glass pitcher, water and not the electrolyte blend, and they did not talk for a long stretch, and the not-talking was the warmest thing that had happened to her in 2,561 days.

She said, when she could: "James Iwobi."

His fork stopped.

"You have it."

"Since Wednesday morning. Meridian and 14th. Coffee gave it back." She turned the water glass a quarter turn on the table. "The mesh took it in the elevator. It came back on its own."

He set the fork down. He looked at her for what he would later tell her was the longest four seconds of his adult life.

"I don't have yours," he said. "I asked you. Three weeks ago, in the elevator. It came out of your mouth and it didn't get to me. I came home the next night and I knew there had been a woman and I knew she'd said green plastic and there was nothing where the name should be."

"Maya Valenti."

She watched him take it.

She watched him hold it, the way she had held his at the corner of Meridian and 14th, with both hands, in the front of his attention, mouth moving a little on the syllables. Maya Valenti. And she watched the mesh come for it. She had never seen it from the outside. His eyes went to a middle distance for a half-second and something behind them smoothed over, plaster going onto a nail hole, and his mouth stopped moving.

He blinked.

"Say it again," he said.

"Maya."

"Maya." He held it. She watched him lose it. It took nine seconds this time. "It's taking it."

"I know. I saw."

"I'll keep losing it."

"Then I'll keep saying it."

He laughed, once, the elevator laugh, the full one, and the mesh in both their heads filed it under acceptable social vocalization, elevated volume, monitoring, and was wrong, and did not know it.

They stacked the plates together. He washed and she dried, because that was how it was done in every kitchen she had ever been in that had a person in it, and at the door he stopped with his hand on the frame.

"Come back," he said. Not a question. A door held.

"I will."

"What's your name."

"Maya."

"Maya." He nodded. "Go before it takes it. I want to have it while you're in the hall."

She went down the hall. She went down nine flights. In her unit she did not turn the lights on. She sat at the table in the dark with garlic on her fingers and her sleeve to her face and breathed, and the mesh logged the evening as minor olfactory deviation, ongoing, sub-threshold, no action required.

She slept.

She woke at 6:14 AM.

Beat 3 — Coda: The Man Who Washed the Pan

Same night. James alone. Pure interior. Longing only.

The door clicked.

He stood with his hand on it longer than the door needed him.

Then he turned around and looked at the apartment. The table. Two plates in the rack. The chair across from his, with the warmth going out of the cushion. Same volume, same furniture, same light. The volume had her in it now. She had gone down nine floors and the volume still had her in it and would.

He sat in his own chair and looked at hers.

She had refolded the napkin. He had watched her do it at the end without seeming to know she was doing it: thirds, the crease smoothed with the side of her thumb, the fork laid across the top edge at an angle a ruler would have approved. Nobody had taught her that in the last seven years. Somebody had taught it to her at eight, in a kitchen on a fire escape, and the machine had told her she had never been in that kitchen, and her hands had kept the kitchen anyway. He was sitting across from a woman whose hands knew things their owner had been ordered to forget. He was going to learn what else they knew.

She had cried.

He had not known what to do, so he had done nothing, and pushed the napkin. He had thought, in the moment, if I touch her she'll break, so he had not touched her. He had kept eating, because a man continuing to be a man across a table from a woman coming apart was the only thing he had to give her that the mesh could not read, and afterward, alone, he thought: that was right. The not-asking was the gift. The napkin was the gift.

The mesh interrupted him.

Elevated arousal. Subject non-roster. Recommend redirect to approved pair-bonding archive.

He pushed it back. He had been pushing it back for three weeks. The mesh kept offering him the building's cleared list, eleven women on fifty-six and the floors adjacent, all approved, all calibrated, each with a compatibility score he could have read off the inside of his own eyelids if he let it, and he had been declining, politely, in the mesh-managed flat register the system filed as low-libido temporal variance, monitoring.

He was not low-libido.

He was thinking about her hands.

Specifically the right one, which had gone to her throat once while he was plating. Three fingers along the collarbone, a half-second of pressure, then down. He did not know what it meant. He wanted the right to find out what it meant in seven different rooms.

He wanted to set a plate in front of her every night until one of them died.

The mesh logged that as aspirational pair-bonding ideation, non-roster, recommend redirect.

He did not redirect. He sat with it.

Her name was gone. It had gone in the hall, four seconds after she said it the last time, and he had felt it go and had said nothing because she was already walking. He could have written it down. There was a pencil in the drawer and the mesh did not read pencils. He did not open the drawer. She had gotten his back from her own body, on a street corner, with coffee. He wanted hers the same way. He did not want it on paper. He wanted it to come up through him.

Biology would give it back. He was sure of that in a place the mesh had no protocol for.

He got up. He washed the pan.

He did it by hand, which the mesh logged as manual labor variance, sub-threshold, and he did it because he wanted his hands doing something plain while the rest of him did the other thing. He dried the pan and hung the cloth on the bar and turned off the kitchen light, and in the bedroom the mesh lowered the lamp to recommended sleep luminance, and he let it.

In the dark he thought about the line of her jaw when she said I don't have yours, the angle of it, the swallow after. Her sleeve moving when she reached for the napkin. Her collarbone under three fingers. The heat that came up in him watching her chew, and swallow, and put both hands flat on a table he had built two years ago for one and set for two ever since.

The mesh ran a heavier cascade. Arousal, prolonged, subject non-roster, redirect to sleep.

He let it tire itself out on him.

He thought about her at her own table in the dark with her sleeve to her face. He did not know she was doing that. He let himself have it anyway.

He turned on his side. The bed was wider than him by half. He did not sleep for a long time.

When he did, he dreamed of basil.

Interlude — Sublevel Four

Day 2,562. Monday. Two workdays, two ends of the same tower.

Priya smelled it before Maya had sat down.

"You've been in a kitchen."

"I haven't."

"Garlic. On your right hand." Priya did not look up from her dashboard. "You washed the left one properly. Whoever you were with, you were thinking about something else when you did the right."

Maya sat. She opened the compliance dashboard. 847 waveforms came up in their rows, each one a person, each one a line the mesh had drawn over a person, and she looked at row 340, which was her own, and which she was not authorized to look at, and which she had been looking at every morning since Wednesday. The line was wrong. It had been wrong for three months in ways the system called variance. Since Wednesday it had been wrong in a way the system had not named yet, and the not-naming was the only thing keeping her at this desk.

"Be careful," Priya said, to the dashboard.

"I'm careful."

"Be more careful than that."

At 10:40 the man with the gray eyes walked the corridor past her glass. He did not look in.

Forty-seven floors below the pod, in the cooling plant on sublevel four of the same tower, James Iwobi stood in front of a wall of temperature and watched the Meridian's residential sector run four-tenths of a degree warm.

The plant was the reason the tower could think. Two hundred thousand square feet of pumps, heat exchangers, and chilled-water loops, holding the servers that ran the eastern seaboard's mesh at a temperature the servers found comfortable. The servers did not know he existed. He was the man who kept them from cooking. He had been the man for six years, eleven hours a day, in a charcoal suit with sensors woven through the fabric that reported his heart rate to the thing he was keeping cold.

Four-tenths of a degree was nothing. Four-tenths of a degree was a Monday.

He pulled the sector log anyway, because that was the job, and the log said the residential array had been running a heavier diagnostic cycle than baseline for six nights, and the heavy cycle had a source, and the source was a single unit on forty-seven, and he closed the log before the system could notice him reading the address.

He knew the address. He did not have the name. It would come.

He adjusted the loop setpoint by a tenth. The graph settled. Somewhere overhead a machine went on thinking about a woman on forty-seven at a cost of four-tenths of a degree, and the man whose job it was to keep the machine from burning stood in front of the wall and did the job.

At 4:52 PM his mesh offered him a roster match, a woman on fifty-five, compatibility 91.

He declined it.

Low-libido temporal variance, monitoring.

He went home and started the stock.

Beat 4 — Risotto

Day 2,563. Tuesday, 8:36 PM. Maya's POV. First touch.

She came up the stairs on Tuesday with her hands shaking around the neck of a bottle she should not have been able to buy.

Olive oil. Sicilian, unfiltered, in a small dark glass with a paper label somebody had printed on a press. She had found it at the back of the dispensary's import shelf on her lunch break, standing in a room she had no window for at 12:20 in the afternoon, and the mesh had let her stand there because a woman looking at a shelf was not a category. The oil was three years past the freshness date the inventory algorithm optimized for. That was why the algorithm had stopped flagging it for restock, which was why it was still there, which was why it had gone onto her roster as minor culinary deviation, sub-threshold, no action required. The mesh had never tasted olive oil. It did not know that two years and three years were different things in a bottle.

She knocked on 56-C with the oil in her left hand and her right hand at her side, and the splinter was not in her chest tonight. It was in her hands.

He opened the door.

He was already cooking. Onions gone soft in butter. Stock. He was in a different shirt than Sunday and he had cooked toward an hour, and the hour was now.

"Olive oil," she said, and held it out.

He took it and read the label and looked up.

"Where."

"Back of the import shelf. They forgot it."

"This is three years old."

"I know."

"This is the good one." He turned it in his hand the way you turned a thing that had come out of the ground. "Come in."

She crossed his threshold for the second time and the kitchen had the same warmth and was not the same room. Different stove-smell. Different counter. Sunday she had walked into the end of a meal a man was finishing alone. Tonight she was walking into the middle of one he was making for two.

"What is it."

"Risotto."

"I haven't had —"

"I know."

He said it without smiling. He acknowledged the seven years of protein blocks and turned back to the stove and pointed the wooden spoon at the cutting board.

"Basil. Pull the leaves. Don't bruise them."

She washed her hands at his sink. The water came out cold, then warm, then the temperature she liked. He had reset the tap. He had noticed on Sunday what temperature she rinsed her hands at and he had reset the tap.

Three stems from the windowsill cans. Small dark leaves, a little waxy, smelling like a field she had never been in. She pulled one. Another. Made a pile.

He stirred. He stepped in beside her at the counter to reach the salt and his sleeve touched her elbow.

Incidental same-volume residential contact, sub-threshold, no action required.

He did not move the sleeve. He stood beside her and reached past her again, slowly, for the pepper, and his forearm crossed her wrist and stayed there half a second longer than the reach required, and the mesh logged that one too, and let it go.

She kept pulling leaves.

He did not move away.

They cooked.

She handed him what he needed before he asked for it, the salt, the spoon, the towel, because she could see the shape of the next thing in the way his shoulders set up for it. He thanked her every time. He did not use her name. He did not have it. She had said it four times on Sunday and it had gone four times, and he had not asked her to say it a fifth, and she understood that he was waiting for his own body to give it back and would not take it any other way.

She did not offer it. She let him wait. It was his to wait for.

They ate at the table. She ate slowly. She did not cry. Her body had been surprised by a plate once and knew the shape of the surprise now and could hold it. She tasted the rice. She tasted the stock, which had been bones once. She tasted the parmesan he grated over the top, a cheese made by a person who owned a cow whose name they knew, in a country she would never see, that the mesh had no calibration for and filed as dairy, aged, within tolerance.

"Where do you get it," she said.

"There's a man at the transit hub with a box."

"A box."

"Cardboard. Under the east stair. He sells what he sells. He doesn't ask the system and it doesn't ask him, because a man with a box is not a retail node." He pushed the cheese across to her. "Bring cash."

"Nobody has cash."

"He does."

She ate a while. Then she asked the thing she had climbed nine flights to ask.

"Your coffee. In the morning."

"What about it."

"Does it taste the way it's supposed to."

He thought about it, which she liked. He did not answer a question he had not thought about.

"Yes," he said. "It tastes like it always has. That's why I don't drink it. I make my own on the stove, in a pot my mother would recognize, and it tastes like burnt dirt, and I drink that." He turned his water glass. "Why."

"Mine changed. Wednesday. The filters came off it. I tasted the bean." She set her fork down. "The mesh didn't do it. I did. Something in me got loud enough that it lost its lock."

He looked at her for a long moment.

"That's what the four-tenths is," he said, mostly to himself.

"What."

"Nothing. Work." He picked up his fork. "So the coffee's the tell. When mine changes, I'll know."

"When yours changes it means I did it to you."

"All right," he said, and ate, and did not seem to think that was a bad thing to have said at a dinner table.

After dinner they stacked the plates. At the sink their hands met on the rim of one, his over hers, and he did not hold it. He let go. She let go. The plate went under.

The mesh ran a low cascade through both of them. They both felt it. Neither one moved.

He walked her to the door at 11:24.

He looked at her in the doorway for a half-beat and did not lean in.

"I'm cooking Thursday."

"All right."

"You don't have to bring anything."

"I will anyway."

"All right."

She went down nine flights with her right hand warm where his had been on the plate and her body running at a frequency the filter bank was failing to catch, and the splinter was not a splinter anymore. It was a doorway, and the door was open, and she had stopped counting the threshold.

In her unit she did not turn the lights on. She sat at the table in the dark and put her right hand over her left wrist and breathed.

Minor olfactory deviation, ongoing, sub-threshold, monitoring.

The mesh was monitoring. It did not know what for.

Beat 5 — Bread

Day 2,565. Thursday. Maya's POV. He gets her name back.

She went to the man with the box.

He was where James said he would be, under the east stair of the transit hub at 5:52 PM, sitting on an upturned crate beside a cardboard box that had once held printer paper, with the flow of twenty thousand commuters an hour passing eleven feet from him and not one of them looking down. The mesh guided people around him the way it guided them around a pillar. He was not a node. He was not anything.

He looked at her once. He had a face that had been outside a lot.

She looked in the box, because he let her. Two loaves in brown paper. A lemon, an actual lemon, with a leaf still on the stem. A jar of something amber with a wax seal. A box of batteries with a brand name on it that had not existed for a decade. Four eggs in a folded egg carton with the corners soft from reuse. Nothing in the box had a barcode. Nothing in it had been formulated for anyone.

"Bread," she said.

He reached into the box and came up with a small dark round, dusted with flour, wrapped in a square of brown paper. Sourdough. She could smell it from where she stood. He did not name a price. He waited.

She had eight bills in the back of a drawer. She had put them there seven years ago on the day her salary went to full mesh-credit, and she had not touched them since, and this morning she had taken them out and looked at them and put three in her jacket. Paper money. It felt like a thing from a museum. She gave him the three.

He looked at the bills. He looked at her. He gave one back.

"Too much," he said. It was the only thing he said.

She carried the bread home in her bag through twelve minutes of managed pedestrian flow with the mesh filing the transaction as nothing, because there had been no transaction, because a woman handing paper to a man on a crate was not an event the system had a field for.

The bread had its own field. On 14th Street a man in the stream beside her turned his head toward her bag, a quarter-turn, the way a dog turns toward a kitchen, and she watched his mesh put his head back where it belonged. He did not know it had moved. He walked on in the flow with his eyes forward and the smell of sourdough in a memory he would not be allowed to keep, and Maya walked beside him for a block with a loaf in her bag doing to strangers what coffee had done to her.

She knocked on 56-C at 8:40 with the bread in her left hand and her right hand still.

He opened the door.

"Bread," she said. "From the man with the box."

He looked at the bread. He looked at her.

"You went to the hub."

"I went to the hub."

He stepped back to let her in and did not say anything else, and he set the bread on the counter the way you set down a thing that mattered and stood looking at it for a moment before he turned to the stove.

Pasta tonight. Tomato, garlic, oil, salt. Four things. He had been taking things out of his cooking since Sunday. She had noticed. Her grandmother had cooked that way, with as few ingredients as the dish would stand, and he had never met her grandmother and was cooking like her anyway, because Maya was in the room.

She took the knife from the block and sliced the bread beside him. Their hands shared eight square feet of counter.

Her body was doing something.

She felt it as a fact of the body, not as a thought. Heat low in the belly. A tightening at the base of the throat. Her breath needing to be reminded. The mesh had been intercepting this signal for so long that she had lost the warning signs, the way you lose a word in a language you stopped speaking, and here they were, all of them, at a counter, with a bread knife in her hand.

She finished slicing. She set the knife down.

He was stirring the sauce with his back half to her, and he said, in the plain voice a man uses to ask for the salt:

"Maya."

She did not move.

He had not been looking at her when he said it. He had not been reaching for it. It had come up through him at the stove with a spoon in his hand and he had said it the way you say a thing you have always known, and then he heard himself, and the spoon stopped.

He turned around.

"Maya," he said again, to check.

"Yes."

"Valenti."

"Yes."

"It came back." He set the spoon on the cloth. "I wasn't trying. I was thinking about the salt."

"That's how it works."

"That's how it worked for you."

"That's how it works."

He looked at her for what was probably four seconds. His face did the thing it did when he had decided not to make her wait, a small softening around the eyes, the breath going out of him, and he raised his hand and put it against the side of her face.

His palm was warm. His thumb rested on her cheekbone. She did not move.

He kissed her.

It was plainer than the one she had built on the stairs on Tuesday night, and plainer than the ones she had built every night since. His mouth was warm and closed and patient and he held it against hers for two seconds, three, the time it took a suppression cascade to deploy and fail and deploy again. His thumb did not move on her cheekbone. His other hand stayed at his side.

He stepped back.

He looked at her.

She looked at him.

The mesh was at the top of its voice. Not loud, because it had been built to stay below the level that would auto-escalate to a recalibration consult, but everything it had under that ceiling was running. She felt the chemistry try to dim her. She felt it slide off her the way water slides off a roof.

"Say it again," she said.

"Maya."

He was smiling. The third one. The one from Sunday.

"Eat first," he said.

She nearly laughed.

They ate.

She stayed until 12:14. They talked. She told him about the pod on forty-three and the 847 waveforms and what it was to spend seven years reading other people for compliance. He told her about the cooling plant on sublevel four, where he kept the machines that ran the mesh from overheating, eleven hours a day, in a Cognitas suit with sensors in the weave. "I keep the thing cold," he said. "The thing that does this to us. I keep it from cooking itself." He said it without weight. It was his job.

The food went cold and they ate it anyway. Each cascade the mesh ran broke against the heat in her, and the heat in her was being fed by the heat in him across the table, with his hand sometimes near hers on the wood, and the apartment was one volume, and the volume was theirs.

At the door he kissed her again.

Longer. His mouth opened. Hers did. She tasted the water he had been drinking and under it the taste of him, salt and warm and unmanaged, and she put her hand flat on his chest and felt his heart under it and let the heart tell her it was time to go.

"Saturday," he said.

"Saturday."

She went down nine flights with her mouth warm. In her unit she sat at the dark table for an hour before she went to bed, and the mesh logged the evening as sub-threshold deviation, monitoring, and was wrong in every word.

Beat 6 — The Almost

Day 2,567. Saturday into Sunday. Both POVs. The night they don't.

She came at 7:30 and did not leave.

He cooked. She ate. They drank water and talked, and somewhere in the talking they moved from the table to the couch, and on the couch from sitting to leaning, and from leaning to lying, and neither of them could have said when, and now it was 11:49 PM and her shoes were on the floor and her shirt was on and his hand was under it at her ribs.

He was being careful.

He had been careful for ninety minutes. It was a discipline he had built over the week: each time he wanted to move faster he asked whether the moving was for him or for her, and each time the answer came back for him he did not move. His hand on her ribs was ninety minutes of for her. Her ribs were warm under his palm. Her breath was uneven. Her right hand was at the back of his neck and his other hand was on her hip and not moving.

He kissed her. She kissed back. Her mouth was hot. Thursday's kiss had been closed; this one had been opening all evening, and it was open now, and it was the kiss of a woman whose body was coming back to her in real time.

The mesh hit them both at once.

It had been escalating all night. Two meshes, two logs. His had elevated arousal, prolonged unsanctioned residential contact, cardiovascular variance. Hers had the same plus non-roster pair-bonding ideation, Category Five subject, priority. Two cascades running on two bodies, each on its own clock. Tonight the clocks had found each other. The system had begun to understand that two of its assets were doing something to each other that neither could do alone, and it had written a protocol for that, and tonight was the first time the protocol ran.

It felt like a curtain.

Like somebody in another room had taken hold of something heavy and was drawing it across the heat in both of them, slow and wide and organized, too big to hit back. Every warm place in him took a serotonin flood. Every warm place in her took the same. Synchronized dimming, on the theory that what one cascade missed, two would catch.

It nearly worked.

He felt her go flat under his palm. He felt himself go flat under his own skin. He felt the discipline get easier to hold, and the ease was the tell: he did not want her less, the wanting itself was being managed.

He took his hand off her ribs.

She opened her eyes.

"It's on you too," she said.

"Yes."

"It's doing us together. It hasn't done that before."

"No. That's new."

They looked at each other.

He sat up. She sat up. They sat side by side on his couch with the cascade running through both of them, and it was working, and the fact that it was working was the most useful thing either of them had learned all night.

"Not tonight," he said.

"No."

"I want to."

"I know. So do I." She put her hand on his thigh and left it there. "But it's learning us. If we go on tonight it gets a clean signal to lock onto. We give it an hour of nothing, it runs its whole cascade and finds nothing, it's worse at this next time than it is right now."

He stared at her.

"You're thinking about the mesh," he said. "While I'm —"

"I'm thinking about the mesh because it's the only thing in the room I can fight."

He understood that so completely that he kissed her once on the temple and got up and went to the kitchen and poured two glasses of water.

They drank the water.

They sat at the table until 12:48. They did not kiss again. They held hands on the wood, just hands, and the mesh filed that as sub-threshold residential bonding, no action required and ran nothing else, because the synchronized cascade had spent its budget and the diagnostics had to recalibrate before the next window opened.

At 12:51 he walked her to the elevator.

They had agreed on the elevator without a word. The stairwell logged a swipe and a body and nine flights of heart rate. The elevator was a public car and it could not log every public heart rate, and what the two of them were broadcasting to each other now was not a thing to carry past a swipe reader.

In the car he kissed her once more, open-mouthed, brief, the doors counting down. She kissed him back hard. The doors started to close on the both of them and he stepped out at the last possible second and the doors closed on his shoulder going away, and Maya rode nine floors down with her mouth on fire and her body running at a frequency the mesh could not yet read.

In her unit she lay on the bed in her clothes and felt her own arousal, and nobody was managing it.

The mesh tried.

It ran everything it had. Serotonin. Dopamine. Direct inhibition at the limbic interface. The full cocktail it kept in reserve for Category Five events.

It failed.

She lay in the dark with every nerve she owned awake and could not stop laughing, silent, into the pillow, the laugh of a woman whose body had come back after seven years and had brought its sense of humor with it.

She slept eventually.

She slept the way a person sleeps, not the way a managed citizen enters sleep-state.

She woke rested.

Sleep cycle atypical, optimal, monitoring.

He went down to the dispensary on Sunday at 6:40 for the basil the mesh liked to see him buy.

The herb cooler had a message on it when he opened the door. Not on the glass. In him, behind the left eye, where the system put things it wanted read.

Iwobi, James. Recalibration consult recommended. Schedule at your convenience within 72 hours. Wellness is a shared responsibility.

He read it twice. He took the basil out of the cooler and put it in the basket and closed the door.

He had been offered a consult once before, in Year Three, after his mother died and he had stopped eating for eleven days. He had gone. A woman in a calm room had asked him calm questions and adjusted something, and he had walked out able to eat and unable to remember the sound of his mother's voice, and he had understood, later, that this was the trade the room offered and that nobody in it had thought of it as a trade.

At your convenience. Seventy-two hours. The system was polite the way a closing door is polite.

He rode up with the basil and did not schedule anything.

That night his coffee, the pot on the stove, the burnt dirt, tasted like coffee. Bitter and sharp and alive on the sides of his tongue. He stood in the kitchen with the cup halfway up and knew what it meant and drank all of it.

She had done it to him. Nine floors down, through nine slabs of post-tensioned concrete, without touching him.

He poured a second cup.

Beat 7 — The Wave

Day 2,569. Monday night. James's POV. Both bodies break the mesh at once. Two nights before the discontinuation notice.

Monday at 10:40 the man with the gray eyes walked the corridor past her glass and looked in.

He had never looked in. Seven years and he had never once turned his head at her pod, and today he turned it, and held it for the length of one step, and went on. His face did nothing. It did not have to. The look was the message and the message was soon, and she typed a number into Column C with a hand that did not shake because she had decided it would not.

Priya said nothing all morning, which was how Priya said it.

At 5:30 Maya rode down forty-three floors, walked twelve minutes to the hub in the flow, rode home, rode up to forty-seven, and stood in her unit in the charcoal the algorithm had chosen for her and took it off. She put on the one shirt she owned that the algorithm had not chosen. It was blue. She had bought it four years ago on a day the mesh had logged as impulse purchase, sub-threshold, and it had hung in the back of the closet ever since with the tag still on it.

She took the tag off.

She climbed nine flights at 7:12.

She came at 7:14.

Earlier than any night before. Without bread or oil or anything in her hands. In a shirt he had not seen on her at his door, and when he opened it and looked at her he understood, without a word passing, that the table he had set for two was not what tonight was about.

She stepped over the threshold.

He closed the door.

She turned to him in the small front hall of 56-C with her back against the closed door and her face level with his. She had left her shoes at the door and he was barefoot and the geometry was even. She said it the way you say a sentence you have rehearsed in the dark:

"Tonight."

"Yes."

"You're sure."

"Since the napkin."

"All right."

He kissed her.

Her mouth opened at once. Her hand went to the back of his neck and pulled, and her body came against his, and it was warm, and it was a body. He had been imagining it for a month and the imagining had been thorough and the body was different from it. Warmer. Smaller where he had thought it would be larger and larger where he had not been thinking at all. He learned each of these things in the first thirty seconds against his own front door with her hand on his neck and his hands on her ribs through the shirt, and the mesh was already lifting the synchronized cascade it had built on Saturday.

He felt the curtain start to move.

He felt her feel it.

They had settled this without speaking, sometime in the last two days, in the hours apart, in the small rehearsals each of them had run alone in their own units: tonight they would not let it close. They would not pull back. They would let the full coordinated cascade run and they would go through it and find out what was on the other side.

He took her hand.

He led her to the bedroom.

Bed. Lamp. Window. He had changed the sheets that morning. He had changed them every morning for a week because he did not know which night and did not want to be a man who had not changed the sheets.

She sat on the edge of the bed.

She looked up at him.

He sat beside her and took her face in both hands and kissed her.

The cascade hit.

It was bigger than Saturday's. The mesh had spent two days running diagnostics on why Saturday had failed and had come back with a wider chemical wash, deeper neural inhibition, simultaneous damping of every limbic and somatic and arousal pathway it could reach in two bodies at once. It deployed at full strength.

He felt his own heat go flat.

He felt hers go flat.

Both of them, together, the heat managed out of them by a system that had been managing heat out of them for seven years and had just decided this particular heat was the one it would suppress all the way down.

He came off the kiss.

He looked at her.

She looked at him.

She did not flinch. She did not pull back. She shut her eyes for a half-second and leaned into it. He watched her do it. He watched a woman take the full chemical weight of a coordinated suppression and refuse to hand it the heat. She held it in her body the way a swimmer holds air under a wave, by patience and not by force, on the knowledge that the water above is finite and the water below is not.

She opened her eyes.

She kissed him.

Her body remembered itself.

He felt it happen. The cascade found a frequency it could not modulate and broke on it. His own heat, seven years dimmed, seven years taken so completely he had forgotten what it was untoned, came back. All at once. Whatever the mesh had been doing to keep him manageable, it had been doing on top of a body that wanted to be unmanageable, and the body had been waiting, and the body had just been told the wait was over.

Under the mesh's chemistry there was something older than chemistry. A hum below the hum. He did not have a word for it. He had it in his chest.

She kissed him deeper.

Her mesh was failing the same way. He knew it without being told.

They lay down. The lamp was on. The window was dark. The apartment held one volume.

Whatever she was, whatever Category Five output her consciousness put into the room, was not bleeding through her own mesh only. It was bleeding through his. A frequency under frequency, a hum in his chest that was not his hum, a wash of her through his nervous system pushing the mesh's chemistry aside the way a strong signal pushes aside static. He was riding her resonance. She was holding him up through the cascade with the same field that was holding her up.

He understood, then, what the system was afraid of. Maya in contact. Her field touching another field. The point becoming a network.

The mesh had been managing single bodies for seven years. It did not know how to manage a pair.

It threw the strongest cascade he had ever felt. The curtain became a wall. It gave up on modulation and went to direct chemical assault, the full inhibitor profile it reserved for Category Five emergencies, into both bloodstreams at once. It was trying to put them under. Into sleep, into stillness, into anything but this.

They did not go under.

He got the blue shirt off her. She got his over his head with the collar catching on his ear and neither of them laughed and both of them nearly did. The rest came off the way clothes come off when two people have decided, with nobody in a hurry and nothing folded. Her skin was warmer than the room. He put his mouth on her collarbone where her three fingers had gone, that first night, while he was plating, and felt her breath change under it, and understood the grammar of the gesture at last: it was where she went when a thing was too much. He stayed there until it was too much.

He moved over her. She opened her thighs and took his weight, and he went into her slowly, because slow was the only speed at which he could feel it, and he wanted to feel all of it.

The first inch, and he stopped.

Her breath went in and did not come out. The mesh went for the signal, genital sensory input, modulate, modulate, and the modulation did not arrive. What arrived was her. Heat and wet and the small tight give of her pussy taking him, unfiltered, the way coffee had come off the filter on a Wednesday morning nine floors down. It was so much information that for three seconds he could not sort it. Then he could.

He went the rest of the way in.

Her hands changed on his back. Flat, then fingers.

"Stay," she said.

He stayed. All the way in and not moving, her body holding him, his forehead on hers, both of them breathing at the machine while it threw everything it had at the place where they were joined and could not reach it.

What passed between them in the room with a lamp was the weight and warmth of things coming back. Their bodies remembered without instruction what their minds had been managed to suppress for seven years, not truly in control of their own physical state. The mesh, overloaded by concepts it failed by design to understand, withdrew temporarily.

The wave broke.

In her first and then in him. Everything seven years of management had been holding under came up past the threshold it had been held under for two thousand five hundred and sixty-nine days, and the threshold gave. In the room with the lamp the mesh screamed. Outside the room it screamed. Inside the two bodies on the bed it could not reach, and it could not reach for seven minutes.

They were not managed for seven minutes.

Neither of them had been unmanaged since Integration. Not asleep, not eating, not walking, not thinking. Every waking second of seven years had been adjusted somewhere on the line between input and output, and the adjustment had been so continuous that the fact of it had disappeared under itself. What came back into two nervous systems that had forgotten it was possible was presence. The presence a body has when nothing is standing between it and its own consciousness. The presence a mind has when the thing that has been thinking on top of it has gone quiet.

He held her. She held him. The lamp did not change. Outside the room the synchronized cascade ran to the end of its diagnostic budget, found nothing left to modulate, and took itself offline for a recovery cycle nobody had designed it to need.

She was crying, quietly, and it was not Sunday's water. These were tears, the kind a body makes when it remembers all at once what it is.

He kissed her face and tasted the salt and said her name into her temple. Maya. Maya. Maya. Three times, and the mesh did not come for it, because the mesh was not there.

The mesh in his head was silent.

Silent, and he could feel where it had been, the small electrical hum at his left temple where the primary node sat under the skin, and the hum was gone. It had thrown everything it had at the two of them for seven minutes and failed completely, and the failure had taken the whole system down for a recovery cycle. He had never heard the silence. He had not known there was a silence to hear.

He looked at her.

She was looking at him. Her face was wet. Her eyes were focused the way a person's eyes focus when nothing in the nervous system is being modulated. He had never seen her like this. He had been falling in love with the managed woman. This was the one the management had been standing in front of.

She was beautiful in a way the mesh had been editing out for seven years.

"James," she said.

"Yes."

"It's quiet."

"I know."

"How long do we have."

"I don't know. Twenty minutes. An hour. Until the diagnostic comes back."

"That long."

"Maybe."

She turned into him. Cheek on his chest, arm across him, leg over his thigh. He held her. Two minds that had not been managed for seven minutes and had not been unmanaged in seven years lay in a bed on the forty-fifth floor and were, for the length of the silence, themselves.

He had no future-tense thoughts and no past-tense thoughts. He had her, here, my arms, the quiet, the volume that has us in it, the wave that broke, the body that is mine again, the body that is hers.

He did not sleep.

He held her.

The recovery diagnostic came back online forty-three minutes later. They both felt it: the small hum re-establishing at the left temple, the suppression protocols loading back into active memory, the system reaching for the record of what had happened during the silence and finding the log corrupted by the failure it was trying to log.

The mesh did not know what they had done. It had lost seven minutes and it would spend two days trying to get them back, and it would not get them back.

Anomalous neural event, subsystem recovery in progress, monitoring.

It was wrong about everything.

She got up at 1:47.

She dressed in his room and he watched her do it. She came back to the bed and kissed him, slowly, with nothing left to hurry for.

"I'll come back."

"Tomorrow."

"If they let me."

He did not ask who they were. He had a guess. He kept it.

She walked to the bedroom door and turned in it and looked at him in the lamplight.

"James Iwobi," she said. "Apartment 56-C."

"Maya Valenti." His voice low. "Forty-seven."

She smiled.

She went.

He lay a long time with his eyes open and the mesh humming back at his temple, not yet up to operating strength. The apartment was still one volume. The bed smelled like her. His chest smelled like her. His body was his own. He understood, lying there, that whatever the mesh logged tomorrow, whatever the system flagged, whatever a recalibration board decided after reading a diagnostic it had not been able to capture, he had had this. The mesh could take the memory. It had taken names. It could not take the fact of having been a body for seven minutes in a bed with a woman who broke the mesh with him.

He closed his eyes eventually.

He slept the way a person sleeps.

He dreamed of basil.

Coda — Four-Tenths of a Degree

Day 2,570. Tuesday, 7:50 AM. Sublevel four.

The residential sector had spiked at 11:52 PM.

He saw it before he had his jacket off. The wall of temperature had the night on it, and the night had a shape: a flat line at four-tenths warm, the line he had been living with for a week, and then at 11:52 a spike that went off the top of the graph's default scale, and stayed off it, and came back down at 11:59.

Seven minutes.

He rescaled the graph so he could see the top of it. The residential array had pulled more power in those seven minutes than it pulled in a normal night. Every diagnostic process the mesh owned had been running at once, on two addresses, and then every one of them had stopped at once, and the stopping was the part the plant had felt. The chilled-water loop had overshot when the load vanished. His night shift had corrected it by hand at 12:04 and left him a note. Sector 47 load event, cause unknown, loop stable.

Cause unknown.

He stood in front of the wall in a Cognitas suit with sensors in the weave reporting his heart rate to the thing whose fever he was reading, and the heart rate was elevated, and he let it be. The mesh in his head had come back up at 12:35 with a corrupted log and a headache, and it was still trying to reconstruct the seven minutes from what the plant had recorded, and what the plant had recorded was heat.

That was all it had. It had felt them as heat.

He filed the shift note under thermal, resolved. He set the loop back a tenth. He went and stood at the pumps for a while where nobody looked at anybody, and thought about a woman nine floors down from his kitchen, in a blue shirt, who had walked out at 1:47 saying if they let me, and he understood that the machine had missed it. Seven minutes of the two of them, and all it had was a temperature. It would go on missing it. It was looking at her for other reasons, had been for months, and a load spike on sublevel four was not going to be what it found her by. He had been working on the thing that ran them for six years. He knew what it looked for, and this was not on the list.

At 4:52 PM his mesh offered him a roster match, a woman on fifty-five, compatibility 91.

He declined it.

[End of arc. The night of day 2,570 is Elias's — the room Maya cannot describe, the instruction to keep the routine. The discontinuation notice that reaches Maya's display on the morning of day 2,571 (Chapter Seven) is NOT about this night: SOVEREIGN flags her for three months of Category Five variance, the fight Elias has watched building since ch 4. The seven minutes never make it into the record. James's own recalibration prompt (72 hours, Beat 6) is the system noticing *him — low-libido variance, roster refusals — and is a separate thread. Chapter Seven's opening count (2,558) moves to 2,571 to match. James Iwobi is next heard from in Chapter Thirty-Eight, at Haven: "Iwobi, James. No dependents."]*
