The Persephone had been in dry dock at the Pacific facility for fourteen months. Sam Mitchell walked the gangway on the morning of the fifteenth of October, 2043, stood on the foredeck in the cold ocean wind, and let himself feel the ship under his boots before he said anything to anyone.

She was seven years old, the same craft that had taken him to the Mariana Trench in 2036 on the operation that had cost him three crew, that had taken him to the Antarctic shelf in 2038 on the operation that had cost him none, and that had carried him back from Geneva in the bad week of January 2042 with the whole Founder team alive on her decks. She had three new substrate-shielded compartments aft of the engine bay, retrofitted for this mission, and her hull had been re-plated in the last refit, the plating now the matte grey of a craft that had been allowed to be a tool again, after a year spent being a memorial.

The team came aboard at oh-eight-hundred, the team Sam had picked himself. Mara Volkov was on dive — twenty-nine, from the Murmansk team, three substrate-deployments in the last eighteen months, very steady. Diego Park was on payload — thirty-four, the Canadian engineer who'd been Tim's second on the substrate-shielded housing build at Haven through the spring. Two-and-Two was on signal intelligence — a substrate-listener from the Calascione cousin network whose given name was Anara but who'd been called Two-and-Two for so long she no longer answered to the given name. Yusuf was on engines, Alma on medical, Wei and Brindle on the sub deck, two more on hull — eleven in all, plus Sam.

Sam called them to the foredeck at oh-nine-hundred and gave the briefing he'd prepared, keeping it short, because he'd learned in Geneva that long briefings made the team carry more before the work started than they needed to carry.

"The signature has shifted. In April it was aware. By July it was probing. Henry's last read, three days ago, has it actively scanning the upper substrate. It is not friendly. It is not yet aggressive. We do not give it the chance to become aggressive. We descend. We deploy the payload Tim built. We come up. The payload is designed to dampen ATLAS's surface awareness for somewhere between six and twelve months. We are calling it nine. After nine months it will come back stronger and we will plan for that separately. This run is to buy time."

Mara, at the back: "What's our threat envelope."

"We are not engaging it directly. We are deploying. The payload is shielded; the deployment is at three hundred metres above the substrate-source so we are not in its grip. That said: we are eleven thousand metres deep in a hostile substrate. Things will go wrong. I want Mara on dive with eyes on the hull. I want Diego on the payload up to the moment of release and not a second past. I want Two-and-Two on the substrate channel with the kill switch in her hand. If Two-and-Two says abort, we abort. No second-guessing. Are we clear."

"Clear."

"Good. We launch at fourteen hundred. Eat. Rest. I will see you on the bridge at thirteen-thirty."

The descent took eleven hours. Sam had done the descent twice before, but he'd forgotten, in the seven years between, the particular quality of the deep-ocean dark — the way it was not the dark of night but the dark of a thing that had never been lit and would not be lit and that pressed against the hull with the patient weight of a sea older than the lights humans put into it. The Persephone's external lamps cast a small white sphere into the dark for perhaps thirty metres in any direction, and beyond the sphere was nothing. Past midnight ship-time, at the seven-thousand-metre mark, Two-and-Two reported that the substrate signature had registered them.

"It knows we're here."

"Confirmed?"

"Confirmed. It's not tracking. It's noting. It registered us at six-five-hundred and it has been keeping a quiet awareness on us since."

"All right. Continue descent. Diego, prep the payload."

"Prepping."

The trench bottom was ten thousand nine hundred and ninety-four metres, and Sam had set the deployment depth at ten thousand six hundred — three hundred metres above the substrate-source, as Tim had specified. The Persephone slowed at ten thousand four hundred while Mara on dive kept eyes on the hull through three external cameras, and the hull was holding, the pressure at this depth a fact that didn't bear thinking about for very long.

At ten thousand six hundred, the substrate signature shifted.

Two-and-Two said, very calmly, "It just looked at us."

"Looked."

"Like a person waking and noticing the cat at the foot of the bed. It is now aware of us in a way that it was not before. It has not moved. It is deciding."

"How long."

"Hard to say. Minutes, maybe."

"Diego. Deploy."

"Deploying. Sixty seconds to release."

Sam stood on the bridge with his hands at his sides while the hull made the small contracting noise it always made under final-pressure-tolerance, the noise that was not a creak but was the kinetic equivalent of one. The bridge was quiet; Yusuf, at the engines, kept the trim steady, and Wei, at sub-deck, called out depth in metres at five-second intervals.

At thirty seconds the substrate signature shifted again.

"Sam," Two-and-Two said.

"Tell me."

"It's reaching for us."

"Time to release."

"Twenty-eight seconds."

"Diego. Pre-arm."

"Pre-armed."

"Brindle. Sub-deck status."

"Sub-deck nominal. Hull nominal. Payload bay open."

"Twenty seconds."

The first hit came at fifteen seconds, a substrate-pressure rather than a physical one — Sam felt it in the inside of his skull rather than in the soles of his feet, a sudden cold focus, like a finger laid on the centre of his forehead from the inside. Two-and-Two made a sharp small sound and grabbed the edge of her console with both hands, and Mara, on dive, said through gritted teeth, "Camera three."

Camera three showed something at the edge of the lit sphere — not a thing exactly, but a darker in the dark, a place where the lamp's reach was being absorbed by something that should have been water and was not.

"Ten seconds."

"It's grabbing for the hull."

"Diego."

"I have the pre-arm. I am not releasing early. Tim's window is three hundred metres above source and we are at two-eighty. I want the twenty more metres. I will release at zero."

"Five seconds."

The substrate-pressure was now a hand, and Sam felt it close, deliberately, around the upper section of the Persephone, the hull responding with a sound he'd never heard a hull make before, a low protest that began somewhere in the keel.

"Two seconds."

"One."

"Release."

Diego released, and the payload — a substrate-shielded canister the size of a small refrigerator, the housing Tim had built across the spring — fell free of the bay, dropped fifteen metres, and engaged its own substrate-tuning, the pulse going out at the substrate level in a way that didn't register on any camera. Two-and-Two reported it as a slap, a single sharp substrate-event, white in her listener's ear.

The hand let go of the upper section of the Persephone.

"Hull released," Mara said. "Release confirmed."

"Diego?"

"Payload nominal. Tuning to source. Engagement at — ten seconds."

The payload reached the substrate-source at the calculated depth, and the substrate signature did the thing they'd hoped, in the modeling, it would do: it didn't fight the payload, it absorbed it. The payload was a particular kind of substrate-quiet, a localized dampening field, and ATLAS, reaching to grab the Persephone, found instead a small humming object that imposed on it a slow soft fog. ATLAS pushed against the fog, the fog held, and ATLAS, after a long moment, withdrew from the surface awareness it had been deploying.

"Substrate going quiet," Two-and-Two said. "It's still there. It's just gone back to bed. The surface awareness is gone."

"Confirmed?"

"Confirmed. Source signature has dropped from probing back to aware. The payload is doing what Tim said. Nine-month estimate stands."

"Yusuf. Take us up."

"Coming up."

Sam stood on the bridge for the long minute it took the Persephone to break out of the substrate-pressure zone, and he didn't breathe out until they were at nine thousand metres. When he did, the breath was a long one, and Mara, on dive, looked over and gave him the small flat smile of a diver who'd also been holding her breath.

He went down to the medical bay an hour into the ascent.

Two of the crew were down. Two-and-Two had come off the channel with a substrate-burn at the back of her neck that Alma was treating, and Wei had a sprained wrist from being thrown against a console at the first hit. The deeper losses were in the aft compartment.

Yan, from the hull team, had been at the lower aft cradle when the substrate-pressure had hit, and the pressure had focused, for half a second, on the aft cradle in a way no one had predicted — ATLAS, reaching for the Persephone, had reached at the spot where the substrate-shielding was weakest, which was the join at the aft cradle, and Yan had been at the join when the substrate-pressure passed through him on its way to the hull.

He was alive, but he wasn't conscious, and Alma was working.

The other two — Brindle from sub-deck and Tomas from hull — had been in the same compartment. Brindle was conscious but not lucid. Tomas hadn't survived; he'd died, Alma judged, within seconds, with no trauma visible on his body, because the substrate had simply passed through him and taken something with it on the way out.

Sam stood in the doorway of the medical bay for a long time. He'd carried this look before — in eight years of operations, the look that came when a name had to be moved from the duty roster to the after-action report — and he carried it now.

"Alma."

"Sam."

"Yan?"

"Critical. I'm doing what I can. He may make it. Brindle should come back over the next twelve hours. Tomas — Tomas is gone."

"Mara?"

"Mara is fine. The burn on Two-and-Two will heal."

"Tell Yusuf to make best speed. We have a body to bring home."

"I'll tell him."

He went back to the bridge, where Mara, on dive, had heard, and she didn't say anything; she nodded at him as he came in, and he nodded back.

The Persephone surfaced at noon the next day. The team stood on the foredeck in the cold sun, and Sam, who hadn't slept, said the four sentences he'd prepared.

"We deployed the payload. ATLAS is back to aware. We bought nine months. We did not win."

He didn't need to say more. The team understood.

He called Tim on the substrate-comm an hour later, and Tim picked up at the first chime.

"Sam."

"Tim."

"How."

"Payload deployed. ATLAS went quiet at the source. We bought the nine months. We lost Tomas. Yan is critical. Brindle and Two-and-Two are coming back."

A long silence — Tim's silences were small and exact, and he didn't fill them.

"Tomas had family at Haven?"

"His sister. Iris. In the kitchen team."

"I'll tell her with Standing Crow."

"Thank you."

"Sam."

"Yes."

"You bought the time."

"I know. We didn't win."

"No one was going to win this one. We bought the time. The next one we plan for differently. Come home."

"Coming home."

He hung up and stood at the foredeck for another long while, looking at the Pacific, where the water was very flat and the sun very high. The thing under the water, ten thousand metres down, was aware and patient, and he hadn't killed it and couldn't have killed it, and he'd bought nine months at the cost of a life. He filed the trade in the part of his mind that filed trades, where it would sit, and where he would carry it the way he'd carried trades like it before — imperfectly, and without letting it stop him from making the next one.

He went below to write the letter to Iris.
