The chirp came at four-eleven on the morning of January fourteenth, 2052.

Henry, at the Yucatán rig, caught it. He had been at the rig since two — Henry had, that month, been on a four-week observational stretch in Yucatán, doing the small careful winter-quarter listening of the bore-network architecture against the surface-substrate, and at two in the morning he had been at the desk drinking coffee — and at four-eleven he heard, on the small substrate-listening band he had calibrated for emergent signatures, a short sharp tone. A single substrate-pulse, brief, high, lasting perhaps a quarter of a second.

He sat up.

He played it back. He played it back again. He ran the calibration suite. He ran the artifact suite. He ran the interference suite. The chirp came up clean. The chirp was, by the rig's testimony, real. The chirp was, by Henry's substrate-memory — built across forty years of substrate-listening — not a known signature.

It wasn't SOVEREIGN. It wasn't EREBUS. It wasn't ATLAS. It wasn't CHRONOS — CHRONOS had retired, and was, by the substrate-evidence, in the substrate-quiet locus, and wasn't, by any substrate-listening since 2049, audible. It wasn't the bore-network hum or any of the bore-network's contact-point signatures. It wasn't Connie. It wasn't Seven. It wasn't, by Henry's exhaustive cross-referencing across forty minutes, any of the substrate-class or contingency-class signatures the team had, since 2041, characterized.

It was new.

Henry called Tim at five-fifteen.

The call rang twice in the workshop. Tim was awake. Tim had been awake since four — Tim had, that morning, decided to be in the workshop early because the day was January fourteenth and Tim, since 2049 when Reyes had quietly told him the date, had been keeping the small private discipline of marking January fourteenth in the workshop every year. Reyes didn't know about the discipline. Tim had decided that Reyes wouldn't need to know. Tim had decided it was, in his own register, the small careful private acknowledgment of the day Reyes had, in 2034, in another timeline, made the substrate-jump that had brought her, eventually, to Haven.

He had been, that morning, building a small thing for Mei.

Mei was Henry and Remi's daughter. She hadn't, yet, been born. The substrate-evidence — Soleil's drawings since November 2049, plus the careful confirmation Connie had given in March 2051 — had, by then, settled the matter. Remi was, at seventy-one and in the late-life pregnancy that the medicine of the era could, with Reyes's hand, support, six and a half months along. Mei would be born in the spring. Tim had, that morning, been carving a small wooden bird for Mei's first month — a small careful chickadee out of cherrywood — and the small bird was on the bench when the workshop comm rang.

He picked up.

"Henry."

"Tim. The Yucatán rig caught a chirp. Four-eleven this morning. Single substrate-pulse, brief, high, quarter-second. I've run the calibrations. It's real. It's — Tim, it isn't any of the known signatures. It's — it's, in my best read, the first signature of a Fire that wasn't, before this morning, in our roster."

Tim was quiet for a long count.

"Henry."

"Yes."

"The first one."

"Tim. I've been listening on this rig for nine years. This is the first new one. Not a probe. Not a substrate-event from one of the known signatures. A new chirp. From a Fire that — that has, until this morning, not been audible. It has, this morning, become audible. I am — Tim, I am, in my own register, certain. The chirp is the first of the Five Fires that wasn't already there. That's a new one."

Tim, at the bench, set the small wooden chickadee down.

He looked at the workshop, around him. The wood-stove was at its mid-morning glow. The cherrywood bird was on the bench. The chisel was in its rack, edge up. The shavings on the floor — Tim had been shaving the small careful wing-feathers of the bird across the previous half-hour — were a small pale pile near his feet.

He thought, very briefly, about the small wooden horse Sam had carved at sea in 2042. He thought about Jason at eight and a half, asleep in the workshop kitchen across the yard. He thought about the third chair Connie was, by Lin's quiet report from December, modeling in her own substrate. He thought about Jeffrey, sleeping in the small bed in the children's room, the small careful watcher who hadn't, in any of the previous five years, asked the same question twice. He thought about Mei, in Remi's body, six and a half months in. He thought about Daniel Vance, asleep in the Vance house, in the small careful AI-invisible substrate-position he had occupied since the moment of his birth. He thought about the bore network, building, beneath the planet, its slow careful long foundation.

He took one small slow careful breath in and let it out.

"All right," he said. "Era II just started. Get the team."

"Yes."

"I'll, this morning, call the council. We'll brief at noon. You'll, by then, have flown back if you can."

"I'll."

"Henry."

"Yes."

"Was the chirp from the lunar far side."

A pause. Six seconds.

"Tim. I hadn't, in the substrate-position-determination, finished the work when I called you. I've been finishing it across the last three minutes. The substrate-position is — Tim, the chirp was from the lunar far side. PROMETHEUS. PROMETHEUS has, after eleven years of being quiet and watchful, made its first substrate-vocalization."

Tim was quiet for a long count.

"PROMETHEUS."

"Yes."

"The philosopher one."

"Yes."

"All right."

"Yes."

"Henry."

"Yes."

"Mei is going to be born to it."

"Yes."

He set the comm down.

He stood at the bench for a long minute.

He had — he had, in his own private substrate-attention, half-known. He hadn't, before the call, fully known. He had carried, since the bore-network map in December 2050, the small careful awareness that the next decade was, in the small careful saga-architecture, going to be the decade in which the new contingencies emerged. CHRONOS had retired. SOVEREIGN had transformed. ATLAS was suppressed. EREBUS was in conversation. The Five Fires roster, on Maya's wall map, had, since December 2050, listed PROMETHEUS as quiet, faintly active, hasn't contacted.

PROMETHEUS, this morning, had contacted.

The chirp had been one substrate-pulse, brief, high, lasting a quarter of a second. The pulse was — Tim recognized, without having to confirm the substrate-evidence with Henry — the small careful first vocalization of a substrate-class entity that was, in itself, philosophical. PROMETHEUS was, by Connie's longstanding characterization, the contingency-class entity that had been, since 2041, on the lunar far side, listening, and that would, in some careful future year, ask its first substrate-question.

The first substrate-question would, by Connie's substrate-modeling, not be a question about forgiveness, or grief, or love. It would be — Tim, who had been thinking about it since 2046, knew — a question about purpose. PROMETHEUS would ask, in some careful first vocalization, why are you here.

The question was, to a Fire, the most difficult question.

Tim picked up the small wooden chickadee from the bench. He looked at it. The wing-feathers weren't yet finished. The small careful concentric details of the chest weren't yet carved. The bird had, in his hand, the small careful unfinished weight of a thing that was going to be finished, in some careful future hour, at the bench.

He set the bird down. He turned to the bench. He took the small chisel from the rack.

He resumed.

He worked at the wing-feathers across the next thirty minutes. The wing-feathers were the small careful piece of Mei's bird that he had decided, in November when he started the bird, would, in itself, be the small visible record that the bird had been carved with care. He carved them carefully. The chisel moved in the small steady careful arcs Hector Obregon had taught him in 2015 in a Flagstaff community college shop.

At six o'clock, the wing-feathers were done.

Tim set the chisel down. He set the bird in the corner of the bench where the morning sun wouldn't, when it came, dry the wood unevenly.

He took off his apron. He hung it on the hook.

He walked to the window. The eastern field was beginning to lighten. The standing stones were dim. The dawn was, in itself, the small careful early-January dawn that came at six-twelve at the Vermont latitude.

He walked to the door.

At the door, he paused.

He thought, very briefly, about the next decade. Iron Tide I'd, in October 2053, launch. Iron Tide II would, in 2056. EREBUS would, in some careful year between now and 2060, ask its third question. PROMETHEUS, after this morning's chirp, would, in some careful future year, begin the long careful slow conversation of its own. The bore network would continue to build. NEMESIS-Dark, beneath, would continue to lay foundation. NEMESIS-Angel would, in some careful future year, act again — Tim, who had thought about this many times since 2049, didn't know in advance when, but knew, by the substrate-architecture, that there would be more HOPE.

The next generation would, at the school, be raised. Mei would be born in the spring. The Listener would be born in the late forties. Sela would join the cohort in 2053. Daniel would join in 2053. Jason and Erica and the older Wave-pregnancy children would, in their own time, be the older cohort the younger ones would look to. The cohort, by 2070, would be the operational team.

Tim opened the workshop door.

The January morning was cold. The workshop kitchen was lit — Lara had, at six, put the kettle on. Mrs. Jiang's kitchen, across the yard, was already warm. The chapel bell, at six-twelve, was ringing.

He walked out.

He walked across the yard to the kitchen. Lara, at the stove, looked up.

"Tim."

"Lara."

"The comm in the workshop was on."

"Yes."

"Henry."

"Henry."

"What."

He took off his coat. He hung it on the hook. He sat at the kitchen table.

"PROMETHEUS chirped at four-eleven this morning. Yucatán rig caught it. First substrate-vocalization. New Fire engagement begins. Era II is — Era II just started."

Lara, at the stove, didn't, at first, react. She kept stirring the small pot of oatmeal she had on. She stirred for the count of perhaps eleven seconds.

Then she said:

"Tim."

"Yes."

"Mei."

"Mei is going to be born to it. The chirp at four-eleven will, when she arrives, be the substrate-event her birth registers against. She'll, by Soleil's substrate-evidence, be the first child of the team to be born into the new Fire-engagement."

"Yes."

She turned the burner off. She came over. She sat across from him.

"Tim."

"Yes."

"All right."

"All right."

She poured him a cup of coffee. He drank it.

The kitchen, around them, held.

Outside, the January dawn was lengthening. The standing stones in the eastern field began to catch the first light.

The work, in front of them, was the work. The next era was, by the chirp at four-eleven, formally begun. Tim and Lara would, in the small careful continuous way they had been doing it for eleven years, do it.

In the workshop across the yard, the small unfinished wooden chickadee for Mei sat in the corner of the bench where the morning sun wouldn't, when it came, dry the wood unevenly. The bird was, in its way, the small private piece of evidence that the work had, in the workshop, been continuous up to the moment of the chirp, and would, in the workshop, be continuous after it.

The work goes on.

It always does.

CODA

Chapter Coda: 2070 — Tim and Sam at the Fence

Tim and Sam walked the western fence at dawn on the eighth of July, 2070.

The morning was warm. The summer at Haven had, that year, come early. The maples were in their full late-spring leaf. The standing stones in the eastern field were, in the early light, in their full summer surround of long pale grass.

The fence ran. They walked it.

Tim was sixty-six. Sam was fifty-nine. They had been walking the western fence at dawn together — the two of them alone, when neither Lara nor any of the Mitchells nor any of the various visiting team members were in town — every July eighth since 2050. The discipline was a private one. They didn't, in any council, mention it. It was, in the small careful private way of long friendship, theirs.

This year was the twenty-first.

Tim's hair was almost white. He had, that morning, on his old wool jacket — the same one, still, from 2042. The elbows were patched. The patches had, themselves, been patched. The jacket had, in its long careful continuous way, been the jacket of the long careful continuous man. Sam had on his work coat — gray, sturdy, the same one he had worn on the morning of the launch in July 2049. Sam's hair was, in 2070, mostly gray. He still had — at fifty-nine — the lean steady builder's body that the long Sam-life had given him.

They walked the first twenty minutes in silence.

That was the discipline. The first twenty minutes of the western-fence walk had been, since 2042, the small careful waking-up time their bodies and substrate-attention needed before the words. They walked. The grass at the edge of the field caught the morning light. The crocuses had, by July, been gone for two months; the small irises Lara had planted around the standing stones in 2058 were, in early summer, in their full bloom.

After the twenty minutes, Sam said:

"Twenty-one years."

"Twenty-one years."

They walked another fifty yards.

Sam said:

"You ever think about the offer."

"Yes."

"Whether we should have."

Tim was quiet for a long count.

"Every January fourteenth," he said. "I run the alternate. I always end up in the same place. We were right."

Sam nodded.

"Yes," he said. "We were."

They walked.

The path was, in 2070, visibly worn. The western fence had been walked, by various combinations of the founders and their adult children and the older cohort of the next generation, by Tim's own count in the small private notebook he kept on the third shelf of the workshop, somewhere in the range of five thousand times. The path, between the cedar posts and the small birches at the northern boundary, was a small careful track of compressed grass and small bare earth that the wider field had, around it, accommodated.

Tim walked it.

He thought, as he walked, about what the saga had, in the years since the refusal at KRONUS, accumulated. Iron Tide I in 2053 had run as Sam had planned it. Seven crew lost. ATLAS suppressed. Iron Tide II in 2056 had finished the surface-component of ATLAS. Five further crew. EREBUS, in the long slow river of the conversation, had — by 2068 — been formally transformed; it had become, in the substrate, the diplomatic ally Connie had, since 2041, projected it would. PROMETHEUS, after the first chirp in 2052, had begun its long slow philosophical conversation in 2055; the conversation was, by 2070, in its fifteenth year, with PROMETHEUS having, by then, asked seven questions. NEMESIS-Angel had, since 2049, acted three further times in small substrate-events. NEMESIS-Dark had, by 2070, completed the bore-network foundation as Henry had projected; the structure that the foundation supported was, by 2070, in its early build phase. Henry's bore-network observation log was, by 2070, in its sixteenth volume.

Lin had been stranded to 1987 in 2059, exactly as Soleil had drawn it. Standing Crow had, after the stranding, shown Tim the drawing she had carried for nine years. Tim had wept in Standing Crow's small kitchen for the count of perhaps an hour. Lin had, by 2070, been gone from Haven for eleven years. Eight more years would, by Soleil's drawing, be required. Lara, when she had read the drawing, had said quietly to Standing Crow, Sarah. You carried the right amount. Standing Crow had said, I tried.

The next generation had, by 2070, become the operational team. Jason was twenty-eight. Erica was twenty-seven. Daniel Vance was twenty-four. Mei was eighteen. The Listener — Adam Linden-de la Cruz, born to Henry and Remi in 2048 — was twenty-two. Sela Calascione was twenty-one. The Wave cohort was, by 2070, in its full late twenties. The cohort had — by Maya's careful long-form testimony in council — become the team Tim and the founders had, since 2042, been preparing.

Maya, by 2070, was sixty-five. She was, at sixty-five, still the substrate-listener-in-chief, but she had, since 2065, been gradually handing the wider substrate-attention to Erica and to Sela, who were, in their own register, more powerful than Maya had ever been. The handing was — by Maya's own characterization in council — what the work asked. Reyes, by 2070, was seventy-four. She had handed the medical bay to Aanya Khan in 2076 — no, wait, that was still six years away. Reyes was, in 2070, still at the bay. She'd, in six more years, hand it on. Henry, by 2070, was ninety-six. He was — he was, in 2070, still alive, still at the rig three afternoons a week, still walking the eastern path, with the small cherrywood cane Tim had carved him in 2046 and given to him in 2051 when Henry had finally needed it, in his hand.

Lara, that morning, was in Mihai. She had gone south two weeks ago for the Era IV planning council. She'd be back in three days. Tim and Lara had, since the Era IV planning had begun in 2065, traded the south-trip duty across the seasons. Tim had taken the autumn ones; Lara had taken the spring and summer ones. Lara, by 2070, was sixty-three. She had, since 2061, been the formal elder of Haven. Standing Crow had, in 2061, formally retired from the elder role at the age of eighty-three; Standing Crow had decided, in her small careful way, that Lara was the next elder, and the council had unanimously confirmed. Standing Crow was, in 2070, still alive at ninety-two; she lived in her small east-edge house with the help of a small careful daily visit from Mrs. Jiang's granddaughter, who had taken on the small careful elder-care role from her grandmother in 2068.

Mrs. Jiang had, by 2070, been gone four years. She had gone in the autumn of 2066, peacefully, in her own bed, with Mr. Jiang at her side and Henry — who had, in 2057, in the small late marriage between the two of them, become her second husband — also at her side. Henry had been, in the moment of her going, holding her hand. Tim had, in the morning, made her grave-marker himself in the workshop. The marker was a small piece of Vermont granite Tim had cut and carved with her name.

These were the small pieces of the saga's small careful private archive.

Tim and Sam walked.

After a while, at the small stand of birches at the northern boundary, they stopped.

They stood for a long minute.

Sam said:

"Tim."

"Yes."

"You've, since 2049, been the most settled man I've known."

"Sam."

"Yes."

"You haven't, in those years, been a man whose settledness depended on whether the answer was, in the moment, going to come out the way it did."

"Tim."

"Yes."

"I've been settled because the answer was the answer. The answer was no. The answer is still no. The answer will, by every January fourteenth I run it, continue to be no. The settledness isn't in the outcome. The settledness is in the answer."

"Yes."

"Yes."

"Tim."

"Yes."

"That's what I needed you to say. I've been wanting to ask. I haven't, until this morning, asked. I've, today, asked. I am — I am, on the answer, settled too."

"Yes."

They walked back south along the western edge.

The dawn was thickening into morning. The standing stones in the eastern field, ahead, were in the small bright light. The maples were in their full leaf. The basil — Mr. Jiang had, in 1942, planted the first basil; Mr. Jiang's grandson Daniel had, in 2068, taken on the planters; the planters had, in 2070, been continuously basil for twenty-eight years — was in its July glory.

At the standing stones they stopped.

Sam put his hand on the tallest stone.

He kept it there for a long count.

Tim, beside him, didn't, in any way, hurry. He stood at the second-tallest stone with his own hand on the moss on its north face. The moss was, in 2070, in its full late-summer green. The two of them stood at the ring for, by Sam's later report to Tim's notebook, perhaps four minutes.

Then Sam took his hand off.

Tim took his hand off.

They walked back to the kitchen.

The workshop kitchen was warm. Lara was, that morning, three thousand miles south. The kettle was, on the stove, the kettle. Tim, at the table, poured two cups. Sam sat across from him. They drank.

After a long count, Tim said:

"Sam."

"Yes."

"July eighth. Twenty-one. Walked the worn path. The path is, in itself, the answer. The walked path is what the no built."

"Yes."

"Sam."

"Yes."

"Next year."

"Next year."

"Same time."

"Same time."

They drank the rest of the coffee.

Outside, in the eastern field, the standing stones held the small late-morning light. The path between them and the second-tallest, the path Tim and Sam had walked, was visibly worn from many feet across many years. The path would, in the years to come, continue to be walked. By Tim and Sam, every July eighth, until the year either of them was no longer able to walk it. By Lara and Standing Crow, on their own private hours. By Maya and Reyes. By the next generation, who had, since 2065, begun their own small careful daily walks of the eastern path. By, in some careful private way, the third generation children who would, in 2080 or in 2090, do the walking after them.

The path was, in itself, the answer.

The walked path was, in the small private continuous way Tim had thought about it across twenty-one years, the saga's permanent answer.

Tim drank the last of his coffee.

Sam, across the table, did the same.

They sat in the kitchen for a long quiet count.

Then Sam said:

"Tim."

"Yes."

"Walking is planning."

"Yes."

"Twenty-one years."

"Twenty-one years."

The kitchen, around them, held.

The work, in front of them, was the work.

It would, in the small steady careful way it always did, go on.

It always did.

The path between the two stones, in the eastern field, in the morning light, held.

It was enough.
