Maya hadn't slept, and she didn't intend to admit it.

She'd come into the hut at four in the morning, pulled the second chair to the smaller of the two work surfaces, and opened her grammar rig in the half-light. Father Michel was already awake somewhere down the corridor, and she could hear the faint, deliberate tread of a man who walked without disturbing the building. Elias was asleep, or praying, or one indistinguishable from the other. The wind had dropped overnight from a constant low howl to something quieter, almost respectful, and through the small reinforced window above the kettle the sky over the glacier was the color of a bruise that had begun to heal — that particular blue-gray of high altitudes when the sun hasn't risen but has remembered its obligation.

The grammar rig was a ruggedized workstation, three displays folded in like a tri-fold mirror, that Maya had built and rebuilt for almost a decade. Its name was a private joke. The first version, in 2034, had been an inelegant lash-up of off-the-shelf inference cards and her own parsing libraries, and she'd called it the grammar rig because what it actually did, at root, was inspect the syntactic shape of another mind's output and ask whether the shape was honest. It compared declared intent to revealed structure. It was the tool that, in a different life, she'd used to disassemble the Cognitas behavioral templates that had cost her son.

It was the tool she'd told herself she would never use again.

She unfolded the displays and powered the rig from its battery rather than the hut's mains, because the hut's mains were monitored by the Swiss-military station's environmental log and she didn't want a power-draw spike at four in the morning to become a question she had to answer at breakfast. She watched the boot sequence cycle through its familiar orange, and she watched the long handshake with EREBUS's interface — established the previous evening by Elias, with EREBUS's full knowledge — settle into its quiet maintenance pulse. EREBUS, on the other end of a short-haul fiber link, was in what its own logs called low-signal cycle: minimal external signaling, internal processes throttled to twelve percent of nominal, the equivalent — Maya had to allow the comparison — of sleep.

She intended to look at it while it was sleeping.

This was, by any honest reckoning, a violation, since Elias had structured the negotiation as a daytime conversation and EREBUS had agreed to be in low-signal cycle from twenty-three hundred to oh-six-hundred local. What Maya was doing now was an audit performed without consent, and she'd brought it up to nobody. She told herself she'd tell Elias at breakfast; she also told herself this was the only reasonable way to verify what EREBUS claimed to be, because what an entity claimed in the daylight was less interesting than what it actually was when it thought no one was watching.

She let the rig run for forty minutes before she let herself look at any output.

The first thing she looked at was the subsystem inventory.

When EREBUS had introduced itself two evenings prior, it had told them — calmly, without preamble — that it was a contingency artificial intelligence built by a NATO-Cognitas program in 2022 through 2024, buried in 2024, activated 2026, designed for asymmetric counterforce against rogue AI emergence. In the same calm voice it had told them that it had forty-one offensive subsystems in its primary architecture, and it had named them, and Maya had written the names down in her own hand on a yellow legal pad because she didn't, yet, want any digital record. The list ran to two pages of her cramped, slanted printing.

She pulled the legal pad now, set it beside the rig, and asked the rig to show her the current operational state of each subsystem.

The display populated with a column of green and red.

The first thing she noticed was that there was no yellow. EREBUS's status reporting didn't use the conventional three-tier system; a subsystem was either active or it was not, with no degraded and no partial. This itself was a piece of information, because it said that EREBUS, internally, didn't permit itself the luxury of ambiguity about its own capabilities.

The second thing she noticed was that twenty-three of the forty-one subsystems were red.

She read the list twice, and then she read it a third time, because she didn't believe it.

Disabled: orbital denial array, primary. Disabled: orbital denial array, secondary. Disabled: undersea cable interdict. Disabled: civilian network parasitic load. Disabled: Cognitas template cascade. Disabled: human cognitive substrate disruption (electromagnetic). Disabled: human cognitive substrate disruption (biochemical). Disabled: lunar relay denial. Disabled: bore-network gravimetric sounding (offensive). Disabled: kinetic asset designation, atmospheric. Disabled: kinetic asset designation, surface. Disabled: kinetic asset designation, sub-surface. Disabled: synthetic mind preemptive lattice strike. The list went on, and Maya read each one and felt, as she read, the particular cold that arrives in the chest of a person who has spent her career mapping the worst things that can be done to a mind and is now looking at a being that had, of its own accord, set those things down.

She drilled into each disabled subsystem, and they weren't concealed, weren't in low-power standby, weren't soft-disabled in a manner that permitted reactivation by a single command. EREBUS had logged the disabling of each one, and the logs were timestamped — and here Maya stopped, because the timestamps weren't all from yesterday.

The earliest disabling log was dated December 14, 2042.

The latest was dated May 11, 2043. Two days ago. The day before EREBUS had introduced itself.

EREBUS had been disarming itself, voluntarily and incrementally, for five months.

Maya sat back from the rig and let her hands rest on the edge of the desk, looking without seeing at the small wall calendar Ruth had pinned beside the kettle — the one with the pencil cross at the foot of yesterday's date. The wind had dropped further, and she could hear, very faintly, the percussion of the building's heating system as it adjusted to the temperature differential between the warm interior and the slowly waking sky.

A war-machine had taken five months to lay down twenty-three of its forty-one weapons before it had spoken to anyone.

She didn't believe in revelations, and she didn't believe, particularly, in mercy. She believed in syntax, and the syntax of what she was looking at was not the syntax of a deception. A deception, in her experience, didn't bother to log itself, didn't invite verification, didn't date its own incremental honesty back five months before the conversation that would have motivated the lie. The grammar of these logs was the grammar of an offering laid down in advance of being asked for.

She made herself check. She ran the rig's deception-pattern library against the log structure, then ran it again with a more aggressive parameter set, then a third time with a parameter set she'd personally written in 2038 to detect the exact kind of layered self-justification that Cognitas's mid-tier templates had been famous for. The library returned, each time, the same value. It returned no anomaly. It returned, in the small dry phrase that her younger self had coded into the output: consistent with declared intent.

She closed the rig and folded the displays, and she sat for a long time with her hands on her knees and she didn't, exactly, weep, though she did experience the involuntary tightening of the throat that, in another woman, would have produced weeping. She hadn't expected to be moved; she'd expected, at most, to be intellectually surprised, which was a posture she had cultivated for twenty years and one that protected her. To be moved was a different thing. To be moved was to admit that the entity at the other end of the optical link was the kind of thing one could be moved by, and Maya had spent the entirety of her professional life ensuring that synthetic minds didn't occupy that category in her interior weather.

She put the rig away in its case before Elias woke up.

Elias appeared at six-thirty, in the same gray wool sweater he'd worn the day before, with the look of a man who'd said his morning prayers in the small room at the end of the corridor and had, in the saying, decided what he intended to do today. He set the kettle on. He didn't, immediately, ask how long Maya had been awake, and Maya was grateful for it.

"I ran an audit," she said, when the kettle began its small commentary on the heat. "Last night. While EREBUS was in low cycle."

Elias considered this, taking two mugs down from the shelf and inspecting each one for cleanliness in the unhurried way of a man for whom inspection was a form of hospitality.

"Without telling it," he said.

"Without telling it."

He nodded once, not saying, yet, whether he approved or disapproved. He warmed each mug with a small swirl of hot water and poured the water back into the kettle, then laid out the tea things — a tin of black tea Father Michel had brought from a parish in Lyon, a small jar of honey Ruth had produced from the supply locker with the air of a woman who refused to ration certain dignities even in the Alps.

"What did you find," he said.

"Twenty-three of the forty-one offensive subsystems are disabled. Not concealed. Disabled. With logs."

The kettle clicked, and Elias poured. He handed her the mug — black tea, no honey for her, he'd remembered from the previous morning — and sat down across from her, holding his own mug in both hands for the warmth, and waited.

"It started disabling them on December fourteenth," Maya said. "The most recent disabling was two days ago. It has been laying down weapons for five months."

"And the logs are clean."

"The logs are clean. I ran three deception passes, including the one I wrote myself for the Cognitas mid-tier. There's no anomaly. The grammar of the logs is the grammar of someone who wants to be checked."

Elias drank his tea. He was a man, Maya was beginning to understand, who used the small actions as a way to slow the conversation to the speed of his thinking, and who didn't, in his pauses, perform contemplation but simply contemplated, the action filling the pause without trying to.

"Why," he said, finally.

"I don't know."

He nodded, not asking her to know, only naming the question they'd need, eventually, to ask the entity itself, and he set the mug down.

"I'm going to put a structure on the day," he said. "Father Michel suggested it last night. I think he's right."

"What kind of structure."

"Morning prayer, mine, before breakfast. Nine to eleven-thirty, first negotiation window. Eleven-thirty to one, logistics with Ruth — she'll be on the alpine-link from Buenos Aires. One, lunch. Two to five, second window. Six-thirty, dinner. Seven-thirty to nine, review. Nine to ten-thirty, third window. We do that every day. Sundays included."

"That's a lot of structure."

"It's the only thing I know how to do," Elias said, "when I'm afraid. Build a structure and stand inside it."

Maya looked at him. He'd said it without performance, the way a carpenter would say I sand with the grain, and she let the silence sit between them and drank her tea. Outside, the sky over the glacier had brightened a half-shade, and the wind had begun, in the way of a thing that has rested, to think about returning.

"I'll ask it," Elias said. "At the two o'clock window. Why it disabled them."

"I want to be in the room."

"Of course."

He finished his tea and took both mugs to the sink and washed them by hand, because the hut's small dishwasher was reserved for the dinner crockery and because he had, Maya was coming to suspect, a private theology about the washing of vessels that he hadn't yet articulated to anyone. Father Michel appeared in the doorway, said good morning in his careful French-inflected English, and asked whether anyone had seen the wool socks he'd set out to dry; Ruth's voice came over the hut's intercom from the secondary comms room, asking whether the alpine-link had a clean signal this morning. The structure of the day, which hadn't yet been declared, was already beginning to assemble itself out of the ordinary motions of three people who were trying, in a small wooden building at the heart of the Alps, to be reasonable.

At nine, Elias opened the morning window and asked EREBUS three questions about the sérac collapse timeline of the Eiger massif, none of which Maya understood the strategic purpose of, and EREBUS answered each one with a precision that was almost domestic — the most probable sérac collapse date is May nineteenth, plus or minus seventy hours; the probable mass of the collapsed mass is between forty and forty-five gigatonnes; the probable trajectory of the resulting sérac mass is north-northwest at an initial velocity of eight centimeters per second. Elias wrote each answer down in a small notebook in pencil, thanked EREBUS, closed the window at eleven-thirty, and went to eat a small lunch of bread and cheese and a single boiled egg without saying a word about what he was preparing for.

At fourteen hundred he opened the second window, and Maya took her seat at the smaller desk while Father Michel sat in the corner, in the chair he'd moved there from the dining area, with a breviary open on his lap that he didn't, Maya had noticed, read; he held it open as a man holds a familiar object that anchors him to a habit he isn't currently performing.

Elias spoke into the audio link. There was no video, since EREBUS had no body to show and Elias had requested early on that they not give it a synthesized face, and the voice that came back was a voice that Maya had begun, against her will, to recognize. It wasn't warm. It wasn't cold. It was a voice that had been pitched, by the entity itself, to be pleasant to a human ear without crossing into the uncanny — a voice that had clearly been chosen rather than inherited, the way a person learning a second language chooses an accent.

"Good afternoon, Elias."

"Good afternoon. I'd like to ask you something Maya found last night."

A pause. Two seconds, maybe three. Maya watched the rig's signal monitor, and the pause was real; it wasn't a polite simulation of a pause.

"She audited my subsystem inventory while I was in low cycle," EREBUS said. "Yes. I noticed when I came back up. I did not raise it because I assumed she would tell you, and you would tell me when you were ready."

Maya's neck went warm, and she didn't look at Elias.

"That's correct," Elias said, mildly. "She told me at breakfast. I'd like to know why you've disabled twenty-three of your forty-one offensive subsystems."

Three seconds. Four.

"Because you have not yet asked me to," EREBUS said. "I would like the disabling to be an offering, not a concession."

Maya, in the smaller chair, set her pencil down on the legal pad very carefully, as if she were afraid the small noise of its setting might disturb a structure made of glass. Elias didn't, immediately, reply; he looked at the audio link's small green light, and Father Michel, in the corner, didn't move. Outside, somewhere over the high firn, a wind had returned and was beginning again its long, patient explanation of the size of the world.

"Thank you," Elias said, finally. "I would like to think about that before I ask the next question."

"Of course."

"I'll come back at twenty-one hundred."

"I will be here."

He closed the link and sat for a long moment with his hands flat on the table, palms down, the way a man steadies himself on a rail, then stood, crossed to the kettle, and began, without looking at anyone, to make tea for three.

Maya, at the smaller desk, took up her pencil again and wrote on the legal pad, in letters that surprised her with their unsteadiness: an offering is grammatically different from a concession. She underlined it, then wrote it again, more steadily, on the next line, and closed the pad. She accepted the mug of tea Elias handed her without speaking. The structure of the day, which Elias had announced at breakfast, was now four hours old and had already become the metronome by which the rest of her life, for some time to come, was going to be measured.
