The packet arrived the way important things arrived now — without ceremony, without a chime, simply present — and Tim Franklin, sitting on the porch of the little house he shared with Lara on the eastern bluff of Two Carolinas Haven, watched the kitchen tablet wake itself, blink twice, and announce, in the gentle voice that meant not urgent but for you, that something had come down from the operation.

He didn't move at once. The porch light was the color of an old peach, and the wind came up off the inlet smelling of brine and pine resin, the same smell every summer evening of his life had carried, even in the years when there had been no porch and no inlet and no him. The smell didn't know about wars or trenches. He sat with his coffee, gone cold an hour ago, and watched a heron walk the shallows on stilt legs.

He was forty-eight. He'd been told this was middle age, and with the stubbornness of a man who's been told too many things, he had decided he would feel about it however he liked. Most days he felt thirty; some days he felt seventy. Today, with a packet on the tablet and Sam at the bottom of the world, he felt exactly forty-eight, which is to say he felt like a man with a son.

He went inside, picked up the tablet, brought it back out to the porch and set it on the wicker table beside the cold coffee, and then he stood for a moment because he had forgotten how to sit.

"Read it standing if you want," Lara said, behind him, in the doorway. "He won't mind."

"He'd mind," Tim said. "He'd say you're going to throw your back out reading three pages standing up."

"That's true. He would."

She came out and put a hand at the small of his back, and Tim sat. The wicker creaked in its old way while Lara took the chair opposite, folded her hands in her lap, and waited, because she knew the way of letters, which was that they had to be read first by the person they were for, in silence, and then read again aloud so the people who loved that person could be in the room with them.

Tim opened the packet.

It was hand-typed. That was the first thing — not voice, not transcribed, not a flash of text formatted by some pleasant kind angel of an interface, but typed, by a human or a thing that had been a human, on an actual keyboard, with the ragged spacing of a person who hasn't used keys in a while and who taps each one because the tapping itself is part of the message. Three pages, in a serif Tim hadn't seen in twenty years, the kind that had been default on the school machines back when Sam was small enough to need a chair cushion to reach the desk.

The header read: S.M., from Tender 1, Lower Mariana Outer Wall, Day 16.

The salutation read: Dad.

Tim read.

Dad, I want to tell you about being a father, which is something I am not going to do, and about being a son, which I have spent my life mostly failing at and now want very much, while there is time, to do correctly. I am writing this on Carolina's typewriter — she keeps one in the medical bay because she says the rhythm of it relaxes her and I think it relaxes me too, the way a metronome relaxes a child who is learning to play scales. The keys are heavier than I expected. Each letter costs something. That seems right. I am sixteen days into the descent and I have not yet decided to come back as one person. I want you to know that I have not decided not to, either. It is simply that the decision has not been made because the decision is not, anymore, mine alone to make — it belongs partly to the work, and the work is not finished. I want to be honest with you about that. You have always been honest with me, even when honesty was a kind of cruelty, and I have loved you for that more than for the kindnesses, although the kindnesses were the things I asked for at the time.

Tim stopped and looked up at the inlet. The heron was still there, very still, watching its own shadow in the silver. He looked back down.

About being a father. I am not going to be one. I think you understood this before I did — you understood it the first time I told you about the mesh, in a way that didn't ask me to apologize for it, and I want to thank you for that. Not having children is not the same as not having lineage. I have lineage. You are it. Lara is it. Mari is it. Carolina, in a different way, is it. The work is it. The kids on Tender 3 who think I am a kind of weather are it. None of these are children. All of them are inheritance. I am going to leave behind, when I leave, several things that will go on with my name on them, the way a father leaves behind several things. One of them is a mesh. One of them is a habit of looking at the deep water without flinching. One of them is, I hope, you — a version of you that has been in my life and has therefore, by the strange physics of fathers and sons, been changed by it. I don't know what the change has been. I hope it has been net positive. I think it has. You always laughed at the right times. About being a son. I have been a bad one, off and on, in the small ways. I have not called when I should have. I have not come home when I could have. I have let your worry sit in your chest like a tenant who does not pay rent. I am sorry. I am not sorry enough to lie about it now, when lying would be easy and a kind of comfort. I am sorry the right amount, which is the amount that lets me say it once and then move on to telling you the truth. The truth is: I am preparing for this descent the way a person prepares for a long swim in cold water, which is to say I am eating the right things and sleeping the wrong amount and saying small goodbyes in my head to people I do not intend to actually leave. You are getting one of these goodbyes, but I am writing it down because I want you to have a copy in your hand, in case the version in my head is not enough. The version in my head is not enough. Nothing is enough. That is how this works.

He turned the page. The paper was the thin onionskin Carolina had always favored, the kind that crackled when you breathed near it, and in the upper corner there was a fingerprint smudge, oily and dark — Sam's, or someone's, whoever had pulled it from the typewriter and folded it into the packet. Tim touched the smudge with the pad of his thumb without pressing hard enough to mar it.

I want to tell you a thing I have not told anyone. When I was eleven, the summer the river flooded and we slept on the upstairs porch because the downstairs was wet, I lay on the cot you set up for me and listened to you snore in the next room and decided — the way an eleven-year-old decides things, with absolute conviction and no idea what it will cost — that I was going to live a life that did not waste you. By which I meant: I was going to live a life that justified the work you and Mom had put into making me. I think most kids decide some version of this and most of them grow out of it. I never did. I am thirty-six years old and I am still that eleven-year-old on the cot, listening to my father snore, and trying to be worth it. I want you to know: you have already been justified. You don't need me to come back whole for that to be true. You have raised a person who can do this work and is doing it, and the work matters, and that is the whole of the equation. Whatever shape I come back in — one person, several, a voice in a room, a name on a wall — the equation has already balanced. You did the part that was yours. Now I am doing the part that is mine. They are different parts. They are both finished, in the sense that matters.

Tim's hands had begun to shake slightly, so he set the page down on the wicker table and put his palm flat on top of it so the breeze wouldn't take it, and he looked at Lara. Her eyes were very bright in the porch-peach light, but she didn't say anything; she'd read the look on his face before, and she knew not to interrupt.

He picked the page back up.

About what comes next. I am going to keep going down. I am going to ride the fish and the frames and the small bright drones into water that has never had a person in it, and I am going to do it as carefully as I can, which is more carefully than I have done anything before. I have a very good crew. Asha is here. Park is here in the way Park is anywhere, which is to say the room knows when she is in it. Mara has her machine. Rolf has lost a man and has decided to feel it, which I think is correct, although it will cost him something. Carolina is here, with her typewriter and her bad coffee and her hands that know how to make a body remember it is a body. Emi Park, who is no relation, is here and is, I think, becoming someone. I am surrounded by people who will not let me become a thing. That said: I might become a thing. Partly. In the operational sense. I want you to know that if you talk to me, in the next few weeks, and I do not seem entirely myself, it is not because I am not myself. It is because I am being more selves than usual, and the self that talks to you might be tired, or might be in the middle of something, or might be one of the smaller pieces. Please do not be offended by it. Please keep talking. The self that talks back is always, at root, your son. The mesh does not change that. The mesh changes a lot of things, but it does not change that. Tell Mari I love her. Tell Mom I love her. Tell the heron, if it is still on your inlet, that I send my regards. I have been thinking about herons lately because there are no birds where I am — the deep water has its own bright things but no birds — and herons have begun to seem to me like a kind of luxury I want to come home to. I love you, Dad. I have always loved you. I will love you in whatever shape I am when this ends. Please be on the porch when I come back. Sam M.

He read the signature twice. Sam M. — the way Sam had signed everything since he was twelve, when he'd decided that Samuel Mitchell Franklin was too long for any document and that he would shorten it to the initials and let people guess which Mitchell was meant. The M on the typewriter was slightly out of true, because the typewriter was old and the M-bar struck a hair high, so the letter looked like it was lifting off the page, like it was about to fly.

Tim put the page down. He didn't cry. He hadn't cried in a long time about things that would happen, because crying about them, he had decided, was a way of insulting the people who were doing them, and Sam was doing this. Crying could come later — when the work was done, or when the work was not done. Crying was a thing for after.

He passed the pages to Lara without speaking, and she took them and read in the unhurried way she read everything, her mouth moving very slightly at the words she liked. The light went down a half-shade while the heron lifted, finally, on lazy gray wings, crossed the inlet at the height of a man, and was gone. Lara reached the bottom of the third page, set the pages on the table, and put her own palm on top of them, the way Tim had, to hold them against the wind.

"He is preparing himself," she said.

"Yes."

"He is also preparing us."

"Yes," Tim said. "That too."

She looked at him for a long time, with that way of looking at him he'd never been able to describe to anyone — not searching, exactly, because she had stopped needing to search for him a long time ago, but a kind of checking in, a hand on a doorframe to make sure the door was still hung true.

"He's going to come back," she said.

"He's going to come back in some shape," Tim said. "He told us. He told us it might not be the shape we sent."

"Then we'll learn the new shape." She said it the way she said all difficult things, matter-of-fact and entirely without performance, the way a woman says we'll need new tires or the gutter is loose. "We've learned every other shape. We'll learn this one."

"Yes," Tim said. He found, after a moment, that he could breathe again, and that the breathing was easier than it had been in a week, because there was something about hearing it said aloud — we'll learn the new shape — that took the edge off the dread without dulling the love. The dread had been the thing that wanted Sam back exactly as he had gone; the love didn't require that. The love only required that whoever came back be met, on the porch, in the peach light, by people who knew his name and the way he took his coffee.

He went inside and got the typewriter.

It was Lara's, originally, a battered green portable Olivetti she'd bought at a flea market in the year of the second monsoon, when nothing electronic worked and people had begun to remember that paper was older than power. She hadn't used it in months, but the ribbon was still inked, so Tim brought it out to the porch and set it on the wicker table beside the cold coffee and the three pages, and he rolled in a sheet of the same onionskin Sam had used, because the supply had come from the same box, originally, when Carolina had visited two summers ago and emptied her duffel of small useful gifts.

He sat. He thought. The porch had gone the color of a darker peach now, almost rust, while the first cricket of the evening tested its bow.

He typed.

Sam, I am not going to lie to you. I have practiced lying to you about this and the lies all sound like the kind of thing a man says when he doesn't want his son to know how scared he is, and I think you would hear that, and I think the hearing of it would be worse than the truth. The truth is: come home in whatever shape you arrive in. We will know you. I am not afraid that I will not know you. I am afraid only of not getting the chance to find out what shape you are. The shape itself does not worry me. It worries Lara even less than it worries me, and Lara is the one of us who is rarely wrong about people. I am proud of you. I have not always known how to say this without sounding like I am trying to take credit for you. I have decided to say it anyway. I am proud of you for the same reason I would be proud of any decent man doing hard work — not because you are my son, but because you are doing it well, and you are doing it kindly, and you are not pretending it costs you nothing. The kindness and the not-pretending are what make it your work and not someone else's. About the eleven-year-old on the cot. He did not waste me. He has not wasted me. He is not wasting me. There was nothing to waste. A father who has a child like you has been spent in the right way, the way a coin is spent on a thing worth buying. I do not feel poor. I feel, on the contrary, very rich, in the way a man feels rich when he has a porch and a wife and a daughter and a son who writes him letters from the bottom of the world. Mari is here. She is going to be here when this letter goes back up the line, and she will add her own paragraph in her own bad handwriting because she will refuse the typewriter on principle. Lara has read your letter and loves you. I have read your letter and love you. The heron sends its regards back to you and apologizes for not waiting, but the herons here are busy this summer and have not learned patience. Come home in whatever shape you arrive in. We will be on the porch. Dad.

He pulled the page from the typewriter, folded it once, set it on top of Sam's three pages, and weighted the stack with his coffee cup, which had a chip in the rim because Mari had thrown it across a kitchen once, when she was nine, in a fight whose subject Tim could no longer recall.

Marisol came up the path twenty minutes later. She'd walked from the school where she taught the little kids to read, and her hair had come loose from its tie, and her face was the color of a person who's been outside all day and hasn't minded. She climbed the porch steps two at a time and stopped at the top because she saw Tim's face and Lara's and the typewriter and the stack of pages.

"From him?" she said.

"Yes," Tim said.

She sat, and she read, and she didn't move for a long time after she finished, and then she got up and went inside without saying anything and came back out with the blue pen she always wrote with, and she sat at the typewriter — the typewriter she'd refused, on principle, since she was eleven — and fed in a fresh page of onionskin, and thought for a minute, and then she typed, with two fingers, slowly, the following:

Sam — the porch is the same. The heron is the same. We are the same. Come back. Mari.

She pulled the page out, folded it once, and added it to the stack.

The three of them sat on the porch in the rust light and watched the inlet darken to indigo and then to a deep ink while the crickets came up. A bat — there were bats again, this year, after a long absence — crossed the gable in a quick zigzag. Lara made fresh coffee at some point and brought it out in three cups, and they drank it without speaking, because the speaking had been done and the doing of it had been enough.

Tim thought, as the dark settled, that he'd been wrong about one thing only — his earlier idea that crying was for after. There was no after. There was only this: a porch, a stack of pages, three people in the indigo, a son a long way away preparing to come back in whatever shape he could manage, and a father who would be on the porch when he did. Crying would have been an interruption of it, so he didn't interrupt.

He thought, instead: witness.

He thought: this is what I am for.

He thought: whatever shape. We will know him.

The bat crossed back the other way, and the first star came out over the inlet while Marisol's hand found his on the wicker arm, squeezed once, and let go. Lara, on his other side, leaned her head against his shoulder the way she'd been leaning it for thirty years.

The porch was the same. The heron was the same. They were the same.

They sat until it was full dark, and then they sat a little longer.
