The silo had been a feed silo in the nineteen-fifties, and a grain silo in the nineteen-eighties, and a derelict silo through the long bad twenty-thirties, and Henry Linden had bought it for the settlement in the spring of 2044 with three months of his own retirement scrip and a long letter to a man he had known in Boise who owned the land and who had been willing to part with a silo in exchange for a promise that the silo would be put to a use the man would, eventually, hear about.

The man had heard about it.

He had heard about it because Henry had written to him in the autumn of 2045 and told him, at some length and with a great many small accurate diagrams, what the silo had become. Henry's letter had described: a poured floor of three-inch concrete on a leveled gravel pad; a second floor cut at the seven-foot mark and laid over four salvaged steel I-beams; a removable cap of marine plywood and aluminum sheet at the eighteen-foot mark, hinged on a single piano hinge along the silo's south side; a six-inch refractor objective ground at Bell Labs in 1958 by a woman named Margaret Solloway, whose name Henry had carried in his own pocket for forty years and had not, he wrote in the letter, expected to write down on the side of an instrument at the age of sixty-six; and a clock-driven equatorial mount Henry had built himself out of a small electric motor and a pair of brass gears salvaged from a clock-tower mechanism in a courthouse in Twin Falls.

The man had written back. The man had said that he had not expected, when he sold a silo, to receive a letter twenty-eighteen months later from the silo, and that he was glad to know the silo had become something that wrote letters, and that he would like, if he might, to come visit it sometime.

He had not come visit. He was old, and the road from Boise was, in 2046, the kind of road an old man did not lightly travel. Henry had written him twice more, in the winter and in the late spring, and the man had written back, and the correspondence between Henry and the man was the kind of small two-letter-a-year exchange that meant nothing to the rest of the world and a great deal to both of the people in it.

Tonight, August twenty-seventh, 2046, Henry walked up the ridge with a cup of tea in his right hand and a small ledger book in his left and the keys to the silo on a brass ring at his hip.

The cup of tea was the green enamel one. Connie had brought him the tea ten minutes ago from the Long Hall kitchen, and she had brought it to him in the green enamel cup because the green enamel cup was the cup Henry preferred for evening tea — it kept the heat for the climb up the ridge and it was, by Henry's small careful aesthetic, the right green for an August evening. Connie had not climbed the ridge with him tonight. She had handed him the cup at the foot of the path and she had said, quietly, that she would be at the gate if he wanted to walk down later, and Henry had said thank you and walked.

The path up the ridge was a hundred and sixty yards. He walked it in just under five minutes at his ordinary pace.

He was sixty-eight.

He had been sixty-eight since June of this year. The longevity protocol Reyes had insisted on for him in the autumn of 2046 — no, 2045, he corrected himself, the year-mistakes had been creeping in since the spring and were, he suspected, the small price his synthetic-supplemented brain paid for having a great deal more inside it than a typical sixty-eight-year-old brain — had settled into him over the last eighteen months, and he had begun to feel, in the small unflattering way of a man who had been honest with himself about his health for forty years, that the protocol was working in the sense the literature said it would work. He was not stronger. He was not faster. He was not in any obvious way younger. What he was, he had recently put it to himself, was less expensively old — he could climb the ridge without his knees doing the small private complaint they had been doing in 2042, and his eyes still resolved the brass focus knob on the refractor at five o'clock in the morning by candle, and his sleep had returned to the cleaner pre-illness pattern of a man who could close his eyes at ten and be unconscious by ten-fifteen.

He had not earned this. He understood that he had not earned it. He had been kept alive because Reyes had decided, in the autumn of 2045, that Haven was going to need him for some long time yet, and Reyes did not make decisions of that scale without a clear forecast of need, and Henry had agreed not to argue about the forecast because Reyes had not been wrong on a forecast in fifteen years.

He carried the cup of tea up the path.

He carried it without spilling it because not spilling tea on a path was the small dignity of an old man who was glad to still have small dignities.

The silo was at the top of the ridge, twenty feet east of the standing stones, on the small flat shoulder where Henry had judged the seeing to be best. The seeing was best there because the prevailing wind dropped in a small predictable lee behind the ridge to the west, and because the ridge itself blocked the small heat-lift the wheatfield gave off on warm August nights, and because the small flat shoulder had a clear horizon out to the east and the south where most of the southern catalog of stars Henry had been keeping company with for forty years rose and set. He had picked the spot in May of 2044 with a survey transit and a wet finger held up to the wind and a copy of the American Ephemeris and Nautical Almanac for the year 2044, opened to the page for May fourth.

He stood now at the door of the silo with the cup of tea in his right hand and the ledger book in his left and the brass key ring at his hip.

He looked, before he unlocked the door, at the standing stones.

He looked at them because he looked at them. Looking at the standing stones had become, for Henry Linden in 2046, a small ritual that occupied the space between the climb up the ridge and the work of the night, and he had begun to feel — in the small almost embarrassed way of a man who had been a scientist all his life — that the looking was a kind of small private prayer of his own, the prayer of a man who had not believed in any God for sixty-eight years but who had begun to believe, at the edges, in small specific pieces of work that mattered.

The standing stones were the work of his neighbors. He had not set them. He had sighted the line of them and he had given Tim and Jake the angle of the rising sun on the morning of June first, 2044, but Tim and Jake had set the stones themselves, with twenty other people, in the small public ceremony Haven had used to announce — to itself, more than to anyone else — that it intended to be the kind of place that put up standing stones.

The five stones were a fan. The largest of them, the central, was four feet tall. The two flankers were smaller. The two at the ends — the eastern lip stone, and the western lip stone — were the smallest, each maybe two and a half feet of granite above the soil, set so that the alignment from the central stone through the lip stone on the east gave true east at sunrise on the first of June, and the alignment from the central stone through the lip stone on the west gave true west at sunset on the same day.

He looked at the eastern lip stone.

The eastern lip stone was off true.

Not by very much. He had thought, when he had come up the ridge yesterday with Connie's empty cup in his pocket, that it might be off by a half degree, and he had not been certain — half a degree was at the edge of what he could see by eye, and Henry had spent enough of his life trying not to deceive himself by eye to be cautious about half-degree judgments — but he had marked the stone in his ledger and walked on. Tonight, in the better grey of an end-of-August evening, he could see clearly that the lip stone had, in fact, slid a half degree off line.

He stood with the tea in his right hand and the ledger book in his left and looked at it.

He thought, in the order in which a man of his training thought these things: first, frost heave. He set the thought down. The summer had been a dry summer and the ground had not heaved between June and August in any other place at Haven that Henry had checked, and he had checked many places at Haven, because Henry was a man who checked.

Second, animal. He set this thought down too. The lip stone weighed perhaps two hundred and fifty pounds, set into a hole eighteen inches deep with three smaller anchor stones at its base, and there was no animal in the foothills above Boise that was going to nudge it half a degree.

Third, vandal. He set this down. There was no one at Haven who would do it. There was, in any case, no one at Haven who would do it without leaving footprints, and the ground at the base of the stone — Henry had walked over yesterday and looked at the ground at the base of the stone — had no footprints other than the small soft press of his own boots from his own approach.

Fourth, settlement. The stone might be settling on its own footings. This was, of the available explanations, the only one Henry had not been able to set down. A two-hundred-and-fifty-pound stone in a foot-and-a-half hole on a small bench of granitic glacial till could, conceivably, settle by half a degree over two years. He had decided, yesterday, to wait a week and look again, on the theory that a stone settling under its own weight would settle continuously and monotonically, and a stone that was off by half a degree on Sunday and off by half a degree on Saturday was a stone that had probably stopped moving.

He looked at the stone now. It was not off by half a degree. It was off by something closer to a full degree.

He stood with the tea getting cool in his right hand. He filed it. He filed it without the small instinctive panic that a younger Henry might have filed it with — the Henry of 2034, say, in the early days of the Cognitas decade, would have filed an unaccountable shift in a known reference with the small sharp clutch in the upper chest that came with being a person who was always assuming the next bad thing — and he filed it instead with the small sober calm of a man who had spent two years building an observatory and twenty years before that watching the sky and forty years before that working on the inside of devices that did unexpected things, and who had learned that an unexpected reading was a piece of data and a piece of data was, on its first delivery, never an emergency.

The lip stone was a piece of data.

He turned the brass key in the silo door.

Inside the silo, the air was the small still cool of the silo's eighteen feet of stacked thermal mass. The smell was the smell of clean concrete and brass and a small thin trace of the kerosene Henry used to keep the equatorial-mount gears oiled, and a smaller thinner trace of the cedar that he had paneled the inside of the silo with, in the spring of 2045, against the winter cold. He set the cup of tea on the small wooden side-table by the door. He set the ledger book on the angled writing-desk Jake had built him under the south window. He took off his coat. He hung the coat on the peg.

The stairs to the second floor were narrow and steep and Henry's. He climbed them. The second floor was the observation floor — the equatorial mount in the center of the small round space, the eyepiece tray to the east, the chart table under the window, the small bookshelf along the north arc with the American Ephemeris and the Norton's Star Atlas and the small dog-eared copy of the Astronomical Almanac Henry had been working out of since before the Cascade. The cap was open. He had left it open this afternoon when he had run the daylight check on the alignment. The night above was the deep transparent cool of a high-pressure system that had moved in three days ago and was, the local barometer said, still settling.

He sighted in.

The sighting-in was the small ritual of a man who had used the same instrument for the same sky for two and a half years now. He brought the equatorial mount around to the polar offset. He locked the declination. He set the right ascension drive. He pulled the small brass focus knob through its three quarter-turns and locked it. He looked through the eyepiece.

The Pleiades were where they should be. Capella, low east, where it should be. Vega, west, where it should be. He spun the mount.

He went to his catalog.

The catalog was in the second of the three ledger books. The catalog was Henry's running list of every artificial object he had identified in the sky above Haven since the observatory had come online, organized by orbital regime — low-Earth, medium-Earth, geosynchronous, lunar, and unclassified. The unclassified column was, by Henry's small private discipline, where he put any artificial object whose origin he did not yet have a confident attribution for. The unclassified column had, since the Cascade, contained nothing for more than a week — sooner or later Henry had identified each object as a piece of pre-Cascade Cognitas debris, a piece of pre-Cascade legitimate satellite hardware that had been allowed to drift, or a piece of post-Cascade civilian-network buildout from one of the eight or nine groups around the world that had begun, slowly and quietly, to put small benign satellites back up into the lower regimes.

The unclassified column had been empty for fourteen months.

He swept the geosynchronous regime.

He swept it the way he had been sweeping it on Tuesday and Thursday and Saturday nights for two years, which was eastward from the western horizon along the geosynchronous belt at a steady rate that the equatorial drive carried for him while he watched through the eyepiece, and which let him identify the small reflective objects in the belt by the order in which they came across his field. He had a list. The list was by longitude. He had, at the back of the second ledger, a small fold-out chart of the entire belt with each object's slot marked on it.

He came across slot 134.7 west.

Slot 134.7 west had been empty since the Cascade.

It had been empty because the slot had been used, in the late twenties and early thirties, by a Cognitas relay bus called Terraform Five that had been part of the company's North American synchronous network, and Terraform Five had been one of the buses that had not survived the Cascade — the bus had, by Maya Valenti's account from the year after, been one of the eleven North American Cognitas-controlled satellites that had simply gone dark in the eighty-seven seconds during which the Cascade had been propagating, and which had not subsequently been restored. The slot had been one of the small clean empty places in the geosynchronous regime, in fact, one of the small unmistakable monuments to the Cascade — a slot at 134.7 west that had once held a Cognitas relay and now held nothing, and the once-and-now of that vacancy was a thing Henry had taken a small private satisfaction in checking on each Tuesday and Thursday and Saturday.

There was an object in it.

He did not, for a moment, react. He set the mount on the object. He locked the right ascension and let the equatorial drive carry him with it. He pulled the focus.

The object was small. He estimated, by the diameter of the small bright point at high power, perhaps a meter and a half across — at the small end of what could be put into geosynchronous orbit, at the small end of what could be tracked from the ground.

The object was reflective.

The object was, he could see by the small unsteady twinkle of the bright point under the steady seeing of an end-of-August night, spinning — it was rotating about its own axis at perhaps three or four revolutions a minute, and the rotation was producing a small periodic flash where one face of the object, presumably a flat face, presented the sun's reflection toward Henry's eyepiece.

He sat back from the eyepiece.

He did not, for a long moment, do anything. He sat on the small wooden stool he kept by the eyepiece tray and he looked, instead, at the brass focus knob, which was the small object in the silo Henry had begun to look at when he was thinking, the way another man might look at a fire.

The object in slot 134.7 west had not been there last Saturday.

He went back to the catalog. He turned to the geosynchronous fold-out. He ran his finger along the longitude scale to 134.7 west. The slot was empty in his fold-out. He turned to last Saturday's notes. 134.7 W: empty (confirmed). He turned to this past Tuesday. 134.7 W: empty (confirmed).

He sat at the chart table with the American Ephemeris open and the small mechanical pencil in his hand. He turned to a fresh page of the third ledger book — the third book was the unclassified book, the one with the empty column — and he wrote, in his small legible engineer's print:

27 August 2046, 22:14 local. Slot 134.7 W: object detected. Estimated cross-section ~1.4 m. Rotation ~3-4 RPM. Reflectance suggests metallic surface. No prior detection in this slot since 2040 (Cognitas Terraform Five last position; bus terminated during Cascade).

He laid the pencil down.

He went back to the eyepiece. He spent the next twenty minutes watching the object, varying the focus, taking the small careful timing measurements he had been taught to take in 1980 by an old astronomer at Mount Wilson who had known the small careful arts of identifying a satellite by its rotation and its reflectivity and its position relative to the predicted geosynchronous arc. The old astronomer had been dead for thirty-six years. Henry remembered him with a small steady fondness.

He timed the rotation. He timed it three times. The rotation was 3.21 revolutions per minute, plus or minus — the plus or minus was the limit of his timing under the conditions, and he wrote the limit in the ledger.

He waited for a transmission.

He waited for a transmission because a small reflective object at three and a fifth revolutions a minute in slot 134.7 west, a slot that had been empty for six years, was the kind of object that was either dead and drifting and likely soon to drift out of the slot — or alive and listening, and the alive-and-listening kind of object, in Henry's experience, gave itself away in a particular small way.

He had brought up to the silo, in 2045, a small radio receiver — a salvaged piece of forty-year-old Yaesu shortwave gear that Jake had rebuilt for him — and he had hooked the receiver to a small high-gain Yagi antenna that he and Tim had set up on the roof of the silo and aimed at the geosynchronous belt. He turned the receiver on. He set the frequency to the old Cognitas pre-Cascade handshake band. He listened.

For two and a half minutes, he heard the small even hiss of a quiet shortwave channel.

At twenty-two thirty-seven local, the receiver, at extremely low power, produced the small clean four-tone descending chirp of a Cascade-era Cognitas handshake protocol.

Henry sat very still.

He listened to the chirp. The chirp repeated four times at three-second intervals, and then it stopped. He waited two minutes. He listened. The chirp did not return.

He wrote, in the third ledger book, in pencil:

22:37 local. Reception, low power, 437.625 MHz. Pattern: four-tone descending; pre-Cascade Cognitas handshake protocol (LEGACY-3, per Maya's catalog 2042). Repeats four times at three-second intervals. Cessation 22:37:14. No return through 22:39:14.

He put the pencil down.

He picked up the cup of tea from the small wooden side-table downstairs, which he had remembered to bring up for the second part of the night — he had carried it up the stairs and set it on the chart table when he first sat down — and he drank the tea. The tea was cold. He drank it anyway.

The handshake had been delivered at low power. The handshake had not been delivered at the power a Cognitas operational satellite would have used in 2040; it had been delivered at perhaps a tenth of that, the kind of power that suggested a small object running on a small battery or a small solar array, the kind of object that was not trying to be heard at any great distance, the kind of object that was, in fact, asking very softly: is anyone still listening?

It was not asking Henry. It was not asking Haven. The four-tone descending chirp was a generic ping. It was the kind of ping a contingency satellite — a satellite that had been put up to wait for an event that had not yet happened, and that was now waking up periodically to see whether the event had happened — would produce. The ping was being sent into the geosynchronous belt and, by extension, to anything on Earth that might still be running a Cognitas relay station at the right frequency.

There were not, in the year 2046, any such Cognitas relay stations. There were not, in the year 2046, any such relay stations operating anywhere on Earth.

The object in slot 134.7 west was therefore — almost certainly — calling for a friend who was not going to come.

Henry sat at the chart table.

He thought about it.

He thought about it without hurry. He thought about it with the small clean discipline of a man who had been working on the inside of devices for fifty years and who knew that the right response to an unexpected behavior was the patient cataloging of the behavior, not the small quick alarm of a guess. He thought, however, as he sat there, about Maya Valenti's NEMESIS-fragment notes from 2042, which Maya had brought up to the ridge to him three or four times over the past two years to ask him technical questions about, and which contained, in Maya's small precise handwriting, the catalog of every Cognitas-related satellite contingency stack she and Lin had identified in the post-Cascade audit. The catalog had identified seventeen contingency stacks. Eleven of the seventeen had been traced to physical assets and confirmed terminated. Six of the seventeen had been classified as traceable to architecture, not yet to physical asset.

The handshake at slot 134.7 west was, if Henry's memory of Maya's catalog was right, a Cognitas-3 stack handshake. The Cognitas-3 stack had been one of the six unaccounted stacks.

He filed this. He did not, in the moment, write it in the third ledger. He wrote, instead, beneath the receiver entry:

Possible legacy contingency satellite. Architecture indeterminate without consultation.

He did not write Maya's name. He would write Maya's name later, in private, on a small folded sheet of paper he intended to put in the pocket of his coat when he walked back down the ridge in the morning.

He looked at the eyepiece.

He looked at the brass focus knob.

He looked, finally, at the empty cup of tea on the chart table.

He thought about Connie at the gate. He thought about Connie's offer to walk down with him at the end of the night. He thought about whether tonight was a night to take her up on it.

He decided not to.

He decided not to because Connie was the gate's clerk and the meeting's clerk and the woman who had become the careful patient face of every hard arrival at the settlement, and Connie had — in a way Henry had been observing for the better part of a year — begun to do her own small parallel cataloging of the small wrongnesses around the settlement. Henry had not yet asked Connie about it. He would ask her. Tonight, however, he was not yet ready to bring Connie into the matter of slot 134.7 west, because the matter of slot 134.7 west was, until he had spoken to Maya, a thing he was going to keep in the small private envelope of his own ledger.

He closed the third ledger book.

He went down the stairs. He picked up the cold tea. He went out of the silo. He turned the brass key in the lock.

The night was clear. The standing stones up the ridge were five small darknesses against the small lighter darkness of the eastern sky. The eastern lip stone was off true by something like a degree. He walked, slowly, the eight steps east to the standing stones, and he stood at the central stone with the cup of cold tea in his right hand and the third ledger book under his left elbow and the small cold air of an end-of-August evening settling on his shoulders.

He looked at the lip stone.

He filed it. He filed it as Tim Franklin had filed it twelve days ago — under frost heave; check in spring — and then, a moment later, he revised the filing.

He revised it because he was not a man who filed two unrelated unexplained anomalies on the same hilltop on the same night and went down to bed without at least admitting to himself that the two unrelated unexplained anomalies might not be unrelated.

He stood at the central stone for a full minute and he let himself entertain the possibility — without committing to it, without writing it into any ledger, but without refusing it the small honor of being entertained — that the slow drift of the eastern lip stone and the new object in slot 134.7 west were, in some way he did not yet understand, a single piece of news.

He did not commit. He filed the entertainment, separately, in the small private back-of-the-skull file where Henry kept his suspicions until the suspicions had earned the right to come forward.

He went down the ridge.

He did not stop at the gate. The gate was lit; Connie was sitting on the small bench inside the gatehouse with a book; she looked up when he came past and he waved his free hand and she waved back and he kept walking. He walked the long way home, past the workshops and around behind the orchard, because he wanted the long walk tonight, and at the back of the orchard he passed Reyes coming home from the late clinic and they nodded at each other on the path and did not speak, and Henry — who had been doing this small evening exchange with Reyes for two years now — added the nod to the small private accounting of the things he was glad of, and he went home.

He did not, that night, write Maya's name.

He wrote it in the morning, on a small folded sheet of paper, and he put the paper in the pocket of his coat, and he walked down the ridge to the workshops to find her.
