At 7:42 in the morning Maya Valenti sat at her desk with a mug of black coffee and a printed agenda, and the world had not yet begun to change, though it would, that afternoon, change for everyone alive at once, and she would remember this morning afterward the way you remember the last ordinary thing before a death — not for anything that happened in it, but for its ordinariness, which she had not known to treasure while she had it.

The coffee was in the chipped Haven mug, the one she always took, the one with the hairline crack down the glaze that she'd been meaning to retire for three years and never had, because retiring it would have meant admitting that some things didn't get better with use, and Maya had built fifteen years of her life on the opposite proposition. She drank it black. She'd drunk it black since the Foundry, since the first months of being hunted, when sugar was a thing you didn't waste and milk was a thing you didn't have, and the habit had outlived its reasons the way most habits do.

She had an interview at nine.

That was the morning's whole shape, as far as she knew it at 7:42 — an interview at nine, with a journalist from The Atlantic named Renee Olmstead, who'd been granted three days at Haven and who was, by every account Maya had been given, going to be difficult. Maya had her agenda printed out, because she didn't trust herself to hold a hard conversation off a screen, and she went through the bullets now, in the early light, the way she went through everything, slowly, turning each one over.

What Haven is. A community. A place that took people in when the world had decided some people were surplus. Not a fortress, not a cult, not a government-in-exile, whatever the feeds wanted it to be that week.

What Haven is not. The center of anything. Maya would have to be careful there. The journalist would want a center, a headquarters, a war room, a throne. There wasn't one. There was a kitchen, and a workshop, and a chamber under the meadow that Maya was not going to mention, and a great many ordinary people doing ordinary work, and the difficulty of the interview was going to be that the truth was less dramatic than the story Renee Olmstead had flown in already half-written.

Why the public still doesn't have a name. This was the third bullet, and it was the hard one. Eight years after the Cascade — eight years after seven hundred million minds came back to themselves in a single afternoon — the public still did not have a name for the four people who'd made it happen. Maya was one of the four. The world did not know her face. The world had been given, by careful design, no face to attach to the largest event in its history, and Renee Olmstead had come to Haven, Maya suspected, to get one, and Maya had come to this desk at 7:42 to make sure she didn't.

There was a fourth thing on the agenda, in smaller print, that Maya had added herself, at the bottom, underlined: do not let her ask about Lin.

She looked at that one for a moment. Then she folded the agenda in half, so the underlined line was on the inside, and set it under the mug.

The window over her desk looked out on the herb garden.

It was the reason she'd taken this office, the one on the south side of the residential ring, when she could have had a larger one with a view of the meadow — she'd taken the small one because it looked out on the herb garden Carolina had planted in 2046, the long beds of it running down the slope in the morning sun, and Maya had found, over the years, that she did her hardest thinking with that garden in front of her, the green orderly fact of it, somebody's patient daily work made visible.

The sage was going to seed.

She noticed it the way you notice the season turning, without deciding to — the sage at the near end of the bed had thrown up its tall flower stalks and gone past flowering now, the stalks drying, the seed heads forming, the plant doing the thing plants do in September, which is stop making leaves and start making the future. The rosemary beyond it stood waist-high, dark and woody, the rosemary Carolina had carried east from San Diego in 2044 as a cutting in a wet paper towel, a piece of a life she didn't talk about, grown now into a shrub a grown woman could lean on. Maya looked at the sage going to seed and the rosemary gone to wood and thought nothing in particular, which was the point of the garden, which was why she'd taken the small office.

She would think, later — that night, and for years of nights — that the world about to change had given her one clear sign of it, and that the sign had been the sage going to seed, and that she'd looked right at it and seen only September. But that wasn't fair to herself, and she'd learn, eventually, to stop holding it against the morning. The sage going to seed wasn't a sign. It was just the truth the garden was telling, the same truth it told every September, the truth that turned out to be the only truth there was when the afternoon came: that the world stops making the thing it was making, and starts making the next thing, and does it quietly, in the sun, while you drink your coffee and worry about a journalist.

Sam-Beta knocked on the doorframe a little after eight.

He knocked the way he did everything now, lightly, with a kind of care that Maya had stopped finding remarkable and had started, instead, to need — the carefulness of a man who'd come into being already grown, who'd had to learn the ordinary gentleness most people spent a childhood absorbing, and who'd learned it, in the years since the Split, more completely than most people ever did. He had a thermos in one hand and a half-folded printout in the other.

"You didn't come to breakfast," he said. "So breakfast came to you." He set the thermos on the corner of her desk. It was the good tea, the one he made, and Maya understood the thermos for what it was, which was not tea — it was Sam-Beta noticing that she'd skipped breakfast on a hard morning and deciding, quietly, to do the one thing about it he could do. She put her hand on the thermos and didn't drink from it yet and that was its own kind of thank-you, and he took it as one.

"And this," he said, and handed her the printout.

It was from Connie's morning digest — the surface-array summary, the thing Connie ran every night and folded out to the household every dawn, fourteen thousand feeds rendered down to a page. Maya scanned it. Mostly green. Mostly the ordinary planetary weather of a world slowly knitting itself back together. But near the bottom Connie had flagged two traces, both in the last six hours, both in the Pacific, and had written, in the dry plain register Connie used for the things she wasn't sure about, two anomalous readings, localized, no resonance signature. Almost certainly nothing. Flagging in case the news cycle picks them up before your interview — better you hear it from me than from her.

"Connie wants you to know before Olmstead does," Sam-Beta said. "In case it surfaces. She doesn't think it's anything."

"Does she ever think it's anything," Maya said.

"She thought the September before last was something," Sam-Beta said. "She was right."

Maya looked at the two flagged traces. Two readings, in the Pacific, in the night, almost certainly nothing. She didn't have the feeling she'd have learned, by that evening, to dread — the feeling of a thing arriving that she'd spend three days holding the world's hand through. She had only the ordinary morning wariness of a woman with a hard interview at nine and a digest that said almost certainly nothing, and she did the ordinary thing with it, which was to fold the printout into her notebook and write herself a note for later.

Check in with Connie at 11, she wrote.

She would not get to eleven the way she'd planned. By eleven the first of the fractures would have reached land, and a schoolteacher in Lagos would be telling twenty-eight children to write down what they remembered of the last minute, and a fisherman off Hokkaido would be watching the same gull cross his bow twice, and the morning Maya was still, at 8:10, treating as ordinary would be the last ordinary morning the species would have for a long time. But she didn't know that. Nobody did. That was the mercy of it, the thing she'd hold onto later, when she was tired in a way no sleep fixed: that they'd all been given one more ordinary morning, sage going to seed, tea in a thermos, a note to check in at eleven, and that they'd spent it, every one of them, exactly as if there'd be another.

"Thank you for the tea," she said.

"Drink it before the interview," Sam-Beta said. "Not after. You'll need your hands steady, not your nerves." He touched the doorframe once, the way he touched the edges of rooms, a man still faintly amazed to be standing in them, and he went, and Maya was alone again with the agenda folded under the mug and the digest in her notebook and the sage going to seed in the window, at 8:11 in the morning, on the twenty-third of September, on the last ordinary day.

She drank the coffee first. The tea could wait. The coffee was already cold, the way it always was by the time she got to the bottom, the chipped mug not holding heat the way it used to, and she drank it cold the way she'd learned to drink most things, and she opened her notebook to the interview prep, and she got to work, and the morning went on being ordinary for a little while longer, the way mornings do, right up until the moment they don't.
