They went down a short flight of stairs, and that was the first thing that undid her, because she had not expected stairs.

She had been at Haven for the better part of a day now, and the day had been a long unbroken strangeness she had walked through the way you walk through a dream that has decided to be kind to you — the blue pad in the cold field at the hour before dawn, and Lin standing on the far side of it not reaching for her, and the kitchen, and the small dry woman who had handed her a cup and said the cup count was right today, and the others coming down one and two at a time across the morning to look at her with the careful undemanding looking of people who had been told what not to do with their faces — and through all of it Stella had kept the joints of herself the way she kept the joints of the day in the shop, present and exact and a half-step back from the largeness of it, because the largeness was the kind that would take her under if she let it come all at once and she had not lived fifteen years on the keeping of one steady light to be taken under on the last morning of it. But she had not expected stairs. Lin had said, after the breakfast that was too full of people for either of them to say anything that was theirs, come and see the workshop, in the plain voice, and they had walked out of the lodge and across a stretch of new spring grass to a long low building with the gray of the workshop on it, and Lin had taken her in past the benches and the racked tools and the humming cabinets to a doorway at the back, and there had been a short flight of stairs going down, and Stella had stopped at the top of it with her hand on the jamb.

"You built stairs," she said.

"Twelve of them," Lin said.

Stella counted them going down. She did not decide to; her feet did it, the way her hands had set out the second cup for fifteen years before her mind ever signed off on the reason, and she came down the twelve in the cool underground quiet behind Lin with her hand trailing the wall, and on the seventh stair her weight came down and the stair gave a small wooden report into the dark, the exact report, the one note, and Stella stopped on it with her whole body gone still the way the body goes still when it hears a voice it has not heard in years come out of another room.

"The seventh one," she said.

"I weighted it," Lin said. She had gone on down two more steps and she turned at the bottom and looked up at Stella standing on the seventh stair in the half-light. "There's a piece of steel let into the underside. It took me a while to get the note. I had it wrong for a season — too flat. Then I found the gauge of it."

"You tuned a stair," Stella said.

"I tuned a stair," Lin said, and there was nothing in her face that asked Stella to make anything of it, which was the thing about Lin that Stella had loved longest and had had no word for in fifteen years and had no word for now, the way Lin would do a thing of enormous and patient love and lay it down between them with no more ceremony than she laid down a finished tool, the doing of it complete and the announcing of it not required, so that the love arrived in the world the way weather arrived, as a fact you walked out into and not a thing anyone performed at you.

Stella came down the last five stairs.

And there it was. The room was not the basement. She knew that the way she knew her own hands — knew that the basement on the avenue in Atlanta was the basement on the avenue in Atlanta and could not be anywhere else and was, at this hour, six hundred miles south and sixty-some years back, dark now, the deadbolt thrown, the percolator cold, the receiver she had turned off that morning with her own hand for the first time in fifteen years gone finally silent on its bench. This room was not that room. But it had been built by someone who had stood in that room for years with her whole attention, and it held the shape of that room the way a letter holds the shape of the hand that wrote it, the low ceiling and the one long workbench down the center and the worn wood of it and the steady amber of the light, not the white of the workshop overhead but the patient amber Lin had carried down here on purpose, and the cluster on the bench.

The cluster on the bench.

She crossed to it without deciding to. The floor was the right number of steps and that undid her too, the bench coming up under her at the distance the bench had always come up under her, and she stood over the housing in the amber and looked down at it, and it was the housing. Not a model of it, not a likeness — the receiver-side of the same cluster, the actual far end of the actual channel her hand had been on for fifteen years, the thing she had kept the light burning on, the thing that had been keeping its light burning back at her across the whole impossible distance because the one whose name she had not known until two years ago had been keeping his end on for as long as she kept hers. She had lived with one half of this object for fifteen years. Here was the other half. It hummed the low even note, the note the seventh stair was tuned to, she realized — Lin had pitched the stair to the cluster, had made the one sing the other, so that to come down into this room was to be told by the wood under your foot what you would find at the bottom of it — and Stella stood over it in the amber with her arms loose at her sides and did not, for a moment, trust the room to hold still long enough to be touched.

Then she put her hand on it.

She laid her palm flat on the housing the way she had laid it flat ten thousand evenings, the metal warm with its own working the way it had always been warm, and the hum came up into the heel of her hand and along the bones of her wrist into the old Hamburg ache that fifteen years in the basement had never carried off and that this body, this morning's body, this thirty-five-year-old body Lin had given back to her without telling her she was giving it, no longer had — and Stella registered that too, sideways, at an angle, with the part of her that kept watch: that the ache was gone, that the wrist under her own palm was a wrist she had not had since Hamburg, that she had walked all morning on knees that did not speak to her and had carried the cup up to her mouth in the kitchen with a hand that did not catch at the first knuckle, and that she had known since the field, since the blue light, since she stepped off the pad into the cold and her body answered the cold the way her body had answered things thirty years ago, what had been done to her, and by whom, and that she had not said it yet.

She said it now.

"You built a layer," she said.

She did not say it as a question. She said it the way you set a tool down on a bench, plainly, the doing of the saying complete and laid between them, and she did not look at Lin when she said it; she looked at her own hand on the housing in the amber.

Lin had come to the bench. She stood on the other side of it, across the cluster, the way she had stood across the cluster in the basement on the avenue a thousand evenings, her own scarred hands resting on the worn wood, and she did not look away from Stella and she did not soften it and she did not dress it.

"I built a layer," Lin said.

"For me."

"For you."

Stella turned the housing a quarter-turn on the bench with two fingers, the small turning, the one true manageable motion the body finds to make while the rest of the news lands somewhere it cannot be reached, and she watched her own fingers do it, the fingers of a thirty-five-year-old, the scar she had got on her own hand in 1989 still there because Lin had built her the body she actually had and not a perfect one, the body with its history in it, only without the cost of the years it had not been given to live.

"When," she said.

"I started it the year before KRONUS," Lin said. "In the basement. While you were upstairs running the shop. I worked on it the hours you were asleep, mostly, because I did not want to have to decide, every night, whether to tell you, and a thing you do while the other person sleeps is a thing you have not yet decided to tell." She said it evenly, the squared upright voice, every loop closed. "I had the architecture of it before I crossed. I finished the body-record protocol here, with Sam, over the six years. The substrate did most of the slow work on your end across the whole fifteen years — every hour the receiver was on, it was reading you, holding what it read, undoing the small daily wear of the years a cell at a time, the way water takes a stone, so that when the morning came there would be very little left for the protocol to finish. By this morning there was almost nothing left to do. Seven minutes. The fifteen years did the rest."

Stella took this in. She turned the housing back the quarter-turn it had come.

"The receiver was on for fifteen years because the man on your end kept his end on," she said. "Park's letters said that. The keeping did not depend on me knowing. He kept his end on."

"Sam," Lin said. "Sam-Gamma. He kept it on. But it was reading you the whole time it was on. Every hour you left it lit, you were letting it do the work I could not tell you it was doing." She paused, and for the first time something moved under the evenness, not breaking it, only present beneath it the way the steel was present under the seventh stair. "I needed it on for fifteen years and I could not tell you why I needed it on for fifteen years, because if I told you, the choosing would not have been yours. If you had known the light was mending your body while you decided, you would have been deciding inside a thing I had done to you, and a choice made inside a thing someone has done to you is not a choice, it is a current you go along with. I wanted the choosing whole. I wanted it to be yours the way the chair was yours — given over, no hook in it, no hand on the scale. So I built the layer and I did not tell you, and I let you keep the light on for your own reasons, and the light did its work behind your reasons, and I have carried the not-telling for sixteen years, and I am telling you now because now it cannot bend the choice. The choice is made. You are here. You can have the truth now without it costing you the choosing."

"You never told me," Stella said.

"I never told you."

The cluster hummed its even note into the amber. Somewhere overhead, far off through the floor of the workshop, there was the sound of a door and then no sound, and then, fainter, from somewhere along the workshop wing, a thread of music — strings, low, a slow figure turning over on itself — that Stella did not know and that Lin did not remark on, and Stella understood, without being told, the way she understood most things in this room, that the music was the one whose name was Sam, in his own place, listening to a thing he had begun to love, and that he had kept the receiver on for fifteen years so that the layer could read her, and that he was, in some way the species did not yet have language for, the reason her wrist did not ache, and that he had put on music this afternoon and left the two of them the room. She filed that. There would be time for it. There was, she was still learning to believe, time for everything now.

She stood with her hand on the housing for a long minute and did not say anything.

She was thinking about the night on the basement stairs. The night in 1995, the night Lin had built the carrier and Stella had come down the stairs in the dark and found her at the bench with the thing finished and humming and had understood, all at once, on the stairs, what it was and what it meant and what Lin had spent on it and was going to spend, and had stood on the stairs with one hand on the rail and felt the whole shape of the years to come arrive in her at once, the leaving and the staying and the keeping and the long alone of it, and had said, after a while, the one word, okay, and the word had not meant fine and had not meant I agree, because there was nothing to agree to, the thing was already true; the word had meant I have seen the whole of it and I am not turning away from the whole of it, had meant I take it, the way you take a weight that is being handed to you not because you have a choice about the weight existing but because you have a choice about whether you will be the one to carry it. She had said okay on the stairs in 1995. She had said it once before that, in 1993, in the kitchen, when Lin had finally told her the truth about the Robin Hood arc and the size of the thing she had set running in the world and the patience it was going to take, and Stella had looked at her across the kitchen for a long moment and said okay, meaning the same thing, I have seen the whole of it. Two times in her life she had used that word with the whole of its weight, and both times it had been across a table or a stair from this woman, and both times it had meant the same thing, which was the largest thing she knew how to say with a small word.

She had spent a year deciding to come here, the way the letter had told her she could, with the choosing whole in her hands, and she had walked the seasons of it and reread the three squared lines and stood at the peach tree and sat at Theo's table, and she had come, in the end, to the Tuesday morning, and she had sent the two lines of her own, and she had crossed. And now she stood at the far end of the channel she had kept the light on, in a room a woman had built her in the shape of the room they had shared, with her own un-aching wrist under her own hand, and she understood that the layer was the third thing — that across the whole fifteen years, behind the steady light, this woman had been doing for her the largest thing she had ever been done, and had done it without telling her, so that the choosing would stay whole; that the not-telling was the last and most exact form of the same love that had tuned a stair; that Lin had given her back her body and given her back the choice both at once and arranged it so that the gift could never be the reason for the choice.

She turned the whole of it over once, slowly, the way she had turned the housing, and she looked across the cluster at Lin standing there with her scarred hands flat on the bench and her dark eyes level and unflinching, waiting, not pleading and not defending, only there, only on, the way the receiver had been on, having laid the truth down between them and made no move to soften how it landed, and Stella saw the whole of it, the sixteen years of the carrying and the seven minutes of the morning and the steel let into the seventh stair, saw it the way she had seen it on the stairs in 1995, all at once, the whole shape.

"Okay," she said.

The word went down into the amber and the hum and lay there between them on the bench, and Lin's eyes changed — not much, not the way another person's would have, only the small lift at the back of them that Stella had spent half her life learning to read, the lift that on Lin's still face was the equivalent of another person's whole body coming undone — and Stella saw that Lin had not, across the sixteen years of carrying it, let herself be sure of the word until she heard it, that she had built the layer and run the protocol and brought Stella across all without permitting herself to know how Stella would take the not-telling, because to assume the okay would have been another hook, another hand on the scale, and Lin did not put her hand on scales; and that the word, now, said, was the thing Lin had been waiting sixteen years to be allowed to know.

Neither of them said anything else for a long time.

They sat down on the two stools, one on each side of the bench, the way they had sat ten thousand evenings, and Stella kept her hand on the housing and Lin kept her hands flat on the worn wood, and the cluster held its even note and the thread of music turned over on itself far off down the wing and the amber lay over the two of them and the bench and the long-kept thing between them, and for a long time the room was only the room, only the hum and the light and the two of them in it, which was, Stella thought, the thing she had crossed sixty years and six hundred miles and a year of deciding to come back to — not the table she had not seen yet, not the chair with her name on it, not even the body that did not ache, but this, the being-quiet-together at a bench with this woman, the oldest and plainest thing she had, the thing the basement had been a fifteen-year-long missing of, given back now whole and on the right side of the distance.

The afternoon was warm above them. She could feel it, faintly, coming down the twelve stairs from the open door of the workshop, the spring air with the green in it, the high light of a season she had only read about for fifteen years in a hand that was not Lin's. Somewhere up there in the warmth was a valley she had not walked and an herb garden she had not seen and a table with a chair at the head of it that had stood empty since before the man who taught himself to wait had ever written her a line, and somewhere up there too, she knew, the way she was learning to know the furniture of this new dark room she had stood in not yet a day, was a girl.

"Mei," she said.

Lin looked up.

"She's eighteen now," Stella said. It was not a question. She had done the arithmetic on the long walks of the year of deciding, two of her years for every one of theirs, the girl growing up across the gap a season at a time while Stella set out the second cup, four years old when Lin crossed and eighteen now, a whole childhood gone by on the far side of the light while Stella kept it burning. "She was four. I held her once. She fell asleep on me in the shop, on the afternoon before you all went to KRONUS, and I did not put her down for two hours because I did not want to wake her. She would not remember it. She's eighteen now and she would not remember the only time I ever held her."

"She knows the story of it," Lin said. "Jake told it to her. Tim told it to her. They told her all the stories, for seven years, before I came home, and they kept telling them after. She knows there was a woman who held her in the shop the afternoon before. She has the shape of you. She has had the shape of you for fourteen years."

Stella took her hand off the housing.

"The shape of a person has to become the person," she said. "I made up your hand for fifteen years. The real one was different. You told me that was the right way to find it out." She did not know where she had heard that — and then she did know, knew it was a thing Lin had written her once, a thing Lin had said to the girl on the first morning and put into a letter so that Stella would have it for her own crossing, the same words handed down the line, that is the right way to find it out — and the knowing of it, the small economy of it, the way this woman built even her comfort to be used twice, undid her one more time, quietly, with the part of her that kept watch.

"Introduce me," Stella said.

Lin stood. She did not say anything; she did not make anything of it. She came around the end of the bench and she stood for a moment beside Stella in the amber, close, not touching, the half-step that they had always kept and would always keep, the two of them who had built a life on either side of a distance and had never once needed to close the last small space between them to know it was held, and then she turned toward the stairs.

They went up. The seventh stair gave its small report under Stella's foot, the one note, the cluster's note, and she let it sound and did not stop on it this time, and they came up out of the amber into the white of the workshop and out past the benches and the racked tools into the open door at the end of it, and the spring afternoon was high and warm and full of a light Stella had not stood in for fifteen years, and across the new grass, down toward a low garden where the green was coming up in rows, two figures were working among the herbs, a small dry woman she had met at dawn and, beside her, kneeling at the sage with her sleeves pushed up and her hair tied back, a young woman Stella had last seen asleep in her arms in a shop sixty years and a whole lifetime ago.

Lin walked out across the field, and Stella walked beside her, and the girl in the garden looked up.

She put down the sage. She stood. She did not run and she did not cry and she did not perform anything, and Stella saw, watching her come around the end of the herb bed, that she had her mother's stillness and her mother's level dark eyes and that she was walking the last steps across the grass in a careful unhurried way that was the way you walk toward a thing you have made up for a long time and are about to find out the truth of, and Stella stood in the high spring light and let her come, and let the meeting be exactly as large as it was.
